@PooltoyWolf It’s evaporated/condensed milk, so to get the same product you’d have to heat the milk and let the water evaporate (and of course add sugar)
@troy Thanks for clarifying, didn’t realize! That said, I rarely drink coffee where I don’t have access to milk and sugar, so I personally wouldn’t find much use for this product.
@robson@troy Me? Not sure how. I saw milk and sugar as the only ingredients and was openly wondering how this product would be any different from separately added milk and sugar. See Troy’s reply to me above.
@PooltoyWolf@troy Not you, @pooltoywolf! Sorry, that was for @troy, it seemed like he was trying to be funny with his “heat the milk” and evaporate comment…
I’ll use milk and sugar too if that’s what I want in my coffee!
@PooltoyWolf@robson@troy Robson, it’s not smart-alecky – condensed milk tastes very different from refrigerated liquid milk. Heat breaks lactose down into sweeter-tasting sugars (that’s why a latte is milder than a cafe au lait) and the reduction also makes the texture caramel-like.
Copper Cow is a marketer of Vietnamese coffee. The usual preparation calls for condensed milk like Thai coffee, but it tastes more distinct from Western coffees because it uses Robusta beans.
@PooltoyWolf@robson@troy@whogots Interesting… I did not know about the lactose change in steaming milk and I thought the only difference between latte and au lait was quantity and temp of milk but now it makes more sense. amazing the things you learn on this site where we usually come just for bags of crap (sorry, I mean kits of regret).
So this is actually liquid milk with sugar? That seems much better than the powdered stuff usually used. Most people don’t realize that ultra-pasteurized liquid milk is sold unrefrigerated in the ROW (rest of world) and does not need to be refrigerated until opened. But in the U.S. we would expect milk in the refrigerator section of the store, so they refrigerate the ultra-pasteurized stuff even though it doesn’t need it.
EDIT oh yeah those non-refrigerated cans of “sweetened condensed milk” have been around for years now (Since about WW-II I think) so yeah that makes sense.
@Kidsandliz@ShotgunX When I do my own milk frothing (been too busy or lazy to set up equipment for it lately) I found ultra-pasteurized was just “weird” and inconsistent and if possible use locally-sourced pasteurized (but not ultra-) milk. One store had local sourced milk in glass bottles with bottle deposit. Not sure if they still have it, it’s part of the takeover by the evil Kroger Empire.
@ShotgunX Meh! Whatever, Don’t be the “expired! expired! expired!” Person in the ad. Stable stuff like this is intended to be stored in doomsday bunkers for 20 years or so.
@pmarin Sweetened condensed milk oxidizes (cooks) with time even while still sealed. I’ve opened cans that were 2-3 years past expiration, and they were brown inside. Not necessarily spoiled (due to the high sugar content), but the same consistency that you’d get by cooking/boiling the product to make dulce de leche. The flavor at that point was also quite a bit off.
So no, the expiration date definitely makes a difference for this product.
What’s being sold here will probably be good for another 12 months (assuming it wasn’t stored in an oven-like warehouse like Amazon does it), but what you get at the store will have a year or two on top of that.
@ShotgunX Oh guess I will have to have my bunker coffee black then. I think I would still trust these packets a bit after exp date but maybe not 20 years.
@ShotgunX Whenever I buy the condensed milk jars, I’m usually never able to use it all before they recommend tossing it (after opening). So you’re paying slightly more for the convenience, but also the certainty that it remains sealed until you need it.
@ctweeks2002@EdgarAllenPope I would say they just ARE sweetened condensed milk. They certainly taste the same to me. It’s just convenient to have it in a single serving and not to have to open a whole can.
These are actually very tasty (I tried their pour over coffee before) but if you work remote like me, you can just buy sweetened condensed milk for a lot cheaper.
@verysmallkisses interesting. I’ll just buy the condensed milk in a plastic bottle with a flip-top lid…cheaper, and I get it this afternoon after work.
@lisagd@verysmallkisses its some condensed milk brank product available in Asian supermarkets.
I will make sure have to take a picture once I grab one.
@pixelated@verysmallkisses Dang, I was just at H Mart last weekend. I don’t shop at Walmart, so I’ll wait for my next trip to H Mart. I don’t drink much hot tea in the summer.
@amehzinggrace I’m sure if you pay for shipping to Meh they will toss your expired packets into our upcoming IRKs but claim no knowledge of how they got there.
This sounds great for my viet coffee at the office rather than decanting a can into a squeeze pouch like I do now, but I don’t think I value it at a quarter a packet.
@sandroes Well I’m in Arizona, it’s just past noon and is 102 degrees outside and I just bought some. I decided to buy them so I can bring them on a couple of upcoming trips. I hate it when I get to a hotel and they only have those stupid little packets that have powdered creamer and sugar with a stir stick and a napkin. They never have enough of them and I don’t want to go to the desk for more. I just have to hope they won’t break open in my suitcase!
@Kyeh@sandroes@Wolf560 better in a ziplock (or two) or in a plastic box. i know i hate plastic, too, but i’m guessing the metal tin will cause you a double check with TSA
These are pretty good. I have purchased them a few times before, so getting them on sale is pretty sweet for me. I hardly use condensed milk, so having small packets for when I occationally need it is great. Bonus that they are also good for camping and traveling.
At 25$ I’ll just leave it at this 100 order. but if they lower the price, this is a solid buy again because they really are tasty. No oil slick like with some condensed milks .
If you use sweetened condensed milk. I would buy. Based on the math it is 5 cent more per oz, which does add up, but the convenience and shelf stability is nice. I threw a couple packets in a ziplock bag and that bag into my backpack. Nice to have and not need to worry about refrigeration.
Fingers crossed they do lower the price because I would buy again in a heart beat.

Copper flavoured creamer?
@yakkoTDI I always put a penny in my coffee for a similar effect.
@jouest That only works with really old pennies. Stay away from the 1943 though.
I’ve never seen a copper cow, and never hope to see one.
@phr I wonder if they develop a nice patina after a few years outside.

When are you selling Ketchup packets?
@somf69 Why would you pay for ketchup packets when they are free at so many places?
If it’s literally just milk and sugar…I’ll just use milk and sugar.
@PooltoyWolf It’s evaporated/condensed milk, so to get the same product you’d have to heat the milk and let the water evaporate (and of course add sugar)
@PooltoyWolf @troy Don’t be a smartass!
@troy Thanks for clarifying, didn’t realize! That said, I rarely drink coffee where I don’t have access to milk and sugar, so I personally wouldn’t find much use for this product.

@robson @troy No worries, sorry for the confusion lmao

@pmarin My local stores definitely don’t. I just bought a carton of shelf-stable Lactaid that was right next to the evaporated milk.
@pmarin @ShotgunX And, in my opinion, shelf stable milk tastes terrible.
@Kidsandliz @ShotgunX When I do my own milk frothing (been too busy or lazy to set up equipment for it lately) I found ultra-pasteurized was just “weird” and inconsistent and if possible use locally-sourced pasteurized (but not ultra-) milk. One store had local sourced milk in glass bottles with bottle deposit. Not sure if they still have it, it’s part of the takeover by the evil Kroger Empire.
So this is basically sweetened condensed milk in packets? At $4 per pound?
Well, 14 ounce cans go for $3 at local stores, That’s $3.43 per pound, and with better expiration dates as well.
Drop the price to $16 and we’ll talk.
@ShotgunX Meh! Whatever, Don’t be the “expired! expired! expired!” Person in the ad. Stable stuff like this is intended to be stored in doomsday bunkers for 20 years or so.

@troy Packet seals are generally known to be more permeable and shorter-lasting than cans and jars though.
@ShotgunX Or another way to look at it is $32 a gallon for milk laced with sugar.
The last pic really made me laugh, for a change!

Great for work when you don’t want the powder stuff and are tired of Andy stealing your half and half out of the company fridge.
@corgincognito That’s claaassic Andy
@corgincognito Just label it “breast milk” and the problem goes away.
Or becomes worse, I guess. Really depends on how horny Andy is that week.
Do they actually taste like the sweetened condensed milk that I am familiar with? I love that stuff in my coffee.
@EdgarAllenPope they do! I got some in a kit with Thai iced tea; they’re delicious.
@EdgarAllenPope @pippakay Are they better than sweetened condensed milk, or just nice since they are shelf stable and individual packets?
@ctweeks2002 @EdgarAllenPope I would say they just ARE sweetened condensed milk. They certainly taste the same to me. It’s just convenient to have it in a single serving and not to have to open a whole can.

16 carbs per 1oz?!?
Are you sure there’s any actual milk in that thing?
I’d believe “condensed sugar” more than anything else!
@matthewjfazio Milk has naturally occurring sugars, and the milk in these is concentrated, so yeah, it’ll be higher in carbs than regular milk.
This sounds great for my viet coffee at the office rather than decanting a can into a squeeze pouch like I do now, but I don’t think I value it at a quarter a packet.
Am I the only one that would buy this if it was the middle of winter but not when it’s literally 100+ degrees?
@sandroes It’s only 97 degrees where I live, so, yes, I did buy this.
@sandroes Well I’m in Arizona, it’s just past noon and is 102 degrees outside and I just bought some. I decided to buy them so I can bring them on a couple of upcoming trips. One came opened and made a mess. The only thing I was worried about
that was my recommendation is add some bubble wrap to the packaging to avoid the smashed packets that ended up in dried leakage on the good packets
