10-4-17 Autumn is upon us
16In many places, fall actually means something. Unfortunately fall doesn’t mean much in Florida. Eventually the grass goes dormant and looks dead. The leaves fall off my oak trees but they skip the beautiful red, orange, yellow phases. Do you get the fall colors where you live? Do you enjoy the leaves changing?
Today’s musical selection will be from Type O Negative, mostly from their October Rust album. It bums me out that Peter Steele is gone. His voice was lovely.

@mflassy Fucking New Yorkers!
@mfladd
At least they’re not VT, MD or MA.
@mflassy you’re right, if they were they’d be giving us a bad name. We have class… and good taste in sports franchises.
@mflassy So you are specifically calling out me, @sohmageek and @jbartus at once?
@mfladd
Hey. Leave @sohmageek out of this. Don’t even tag him.
@mflassy you brought @sohmageek into it when you called out VT!
@jbartus it’s cool. People are just jealous of our beer
@sohmageek yeah! Our beer! And our sports franchises!
@jbartus @sohmageek
@mflassy your loss on both counts.
@jbartus
There is a bright side to not bringing beer or paying attention to sports.
@mflassy you’re not missing much. Beer is gross. You either like it, or you don’t. People say it’s an acquired taste, or you need to get used to it… I’ve been tasting different beers for years. Still hate it.
@RiotDemon wrong beers maybe? There’s a vast variety of flavors.
@jbartus doubt it. Trust me, I’ve tasted a lot. Sure, they might all have a different taste, but in the end, they have a “beer” base taste and that’s what I don’t like.
@RiotDemon Not that I’m going to change your mind here, but I’ll give it a shot with some beers with pronounced non-beer flavors:
Schofferhofer - Grapefruit + beer at 2-3% ABV (I’ve never eaten a grapefruit in my life, but this combo is great).
http://www.schofferhofer.us/
Sweet Baby Jesus & Dirty Little Freak from Du Claw Brewing- chocolate peanut butter porter & coconut chocolate brown ale https://duclaw.com/beer_category/year-round/
Generally, most shandys or radlers- Illusive Traveller and Lienkugel’s make fabulous ones.
@RiotDemon I love the smell of beer, so I have tasted a huge number of them hoping to find one I like but they are all terrible. The lighter the worse, the darker the better, but I’ve still never tasted one I’ll actually drink. I think maybe I dislike hops. I’m allergic to wine (sulfides), sensitive to sugar in drinks and don’t like beer. It’s always a contest among my friends to bring something alcoholic to a party that I will drink. I do like the hard ciders, but about half of one is all the sugar I can take. Im waiting for one with no sugar added to see if the natural fruit sugar is too much. I can eat sugar in reasonable quantities but I cant drink it.
Edit: So brief research suggests I should be looking at import ciders, which are less likely to have added sugar than American ones. No surprise. That’s why I like foreign confections better than domestic, I like a sweet treat now and then but I’m not infatuated with sugar.
@moondrake I don’t like the smell of beer. I know for sure I don’t like hops. It grew where I lived as a kid. I remember pinching the, uh, hop part of the plant between my fingers and the smell it left on my hands was disgusting.
I don’t drink wine. The only ones that I could tolerate were things like Arbor Mist that basically taste like juice.
I’m having trouble with sugars in drinks now as well. I like the Smirnoff Ice Apple and Grapefruit flavors… Halfway through a bottle, I usually break out in a sweat or I feel like I’m on fire because my blood vessels dilate and I look like I have a sunburn. (Probably similar to “Asian glow”)
@RiotDemon
Asian Glow was one of the best dancers down at the hoochie coochie bar here.
@RiotDemon
I can’t find the source. Googling isn’t getting me there.
During and after WWII (the UK suffered enormous privation and food shortages, “Victory Gardens” were a necessity), there was a saying.
Something like this:
“Britain survives on her hips and her hops.”
Referring to [brewing] hops (I think loaded with B vitamins), and rose hips (vitamin c).
(Not expecting to change your taste here. Just an interesting historical tidbit.)
@dashcloud this puzzles me: why make beer that “doesn’t taste like beer” so that you can drink beer. If you don’t like beer then drink what you like (wine, Pepsi, vodka, in my case: milk) without apology.
The “tastes like meat” (bacon, burgers, etc) vegetarian/vegan food perplexes me too. I’m not vegetarian but i often order vegetarian or vegan meals at restaurants because they can taste so good. Why have bad tasting (be honest, no “vegetarian meat” tastes good. None of it.) “meat” when you can have something that tastes good. I got over never having chocolate again (caffeine intolerance: migraines) but still enjoy smelling a good cup o joe or hot chocolate someone else at my tables is enjoying, and it doesnt ruin my meal. Just smell the real burgers then eat the awesome vegetarian food you ordered and be happy. Stop the insanity of “bacon flavored” tofu. Please.
/image please stop
@mollama It’s not bad tasting- all of those beers are excellent tasting provided you like those flavors. I’m just trying to offer some choices off the beaten path that might be interesting.
@dashcloud i get that it probably tastes delicious (I drink wine coolers, flavored chickory and other things with “not the normal flavor” but still has the basic taste), I just dont get why people make food/drinks to not taste like what they are/taste like something totally different to market to those who don’t want to eat/drink that food, other than pure capitalism. Yet we buy it when we didn’t want it, pure i-don’t-know-what. Eat what you like, don’t settle for "tastes like this other thing."
My husband had to do protein shakes after gastric bypass to get his protein, we went through dozens to get to two he likes, i buy nothing else because it isnt fair to make him “choke it down.” Those things are expensive and i threw out a lot if the ones he didnt like but now were open.
It’s going to be in the 90s again later this week, so for SoCal, I guess it means cooler weather.
@narfcake
Meant to ask you, do you see any squirrel figurines when you visit Goodwill?
@narfcake next week we are in the high 80s with the feels like temps in the 100s still. It’s been raining for the last four days here… So it feels slightly cooler right now.
@mflassy I can’t say I’ve paid enough attention to know. Squirrel shirts, though – yes.

What a great band.
Is it weird that I find Type O Negative funny? Sometimes I turn them up loud when I’m in the car (by myself) and I can’t go far before I start laughing.

@2many2no that is kinda weird, haha. What do you find funny about it?
Interesting selection! That video is so bizarre. I like it.
@RiotDemon I think it’s how they play it so over-the-top, both the lyrics and the video. It’s not just dark, it’s blacker than black. Steele’s deep voice is incredible.
And some of the songs are about previous relationships.
Fall used to mean raking but for the time being we have a service, so I WILL be enjoying the colors THIS year. However the local maples, which are the real color trees, haven’t started going yet. It seems to me that the oaks usually have a fairly limited palette, browns and yellows maybe?
@RiotDemon Bummer, wherever you have those images stored, I can’t see them at work. The videos are always blocked too. Any chance in the future of using the direct upload or sharing the pics from another site like Imgur? I’d imagine if my company blocks them, many others do too and we’re not getting to enjoy your goat work.
@cinoclav Sorry. The pictures are directly loaded from their respective homes and the videos are YouTube. I do these posts on my phone and I just don’t have the patience to reupload everything onto mediocre or imgur on my phone.
I’m assuming your work blocks all social media type sites because a lot of today’s photos are from pinterest apparently. I’m currently on borrowed Wi-Fi and it blocks all the photos that are loaded onto the mediocre server, but it lets me access YouTube fine. I dunno.
I’ll take the blame since I’m goat.
@cinoclav here ya go:
@jbartus Aww, you’ve gone above and beyond. +1 Thank you!
@RiotDemon When I was on here all the time, I used an imgur fast app. Didn’t actually upload to imgur, just a great conversion app that took only a few seconds. Handy stuff
Wow! Good Call on the Type O Negative! They are the quintessential Fall/Halloween band for me. Fortunately, I got to see the band several times before the passing of Peter Steele. “Loving you is like loving the dead…”
@RiotDemon
Yeah great musical choice. Thx.
the trees seem to go from green to leafless pretty quick here in dfw.
i did decorate my prompt for fall though, so there’s that.
i have more fall colors depending where i am
i’m a little crazy when it comes to terminal appearance, prolly because i spend so much time there
@katylava
It’s important to have a proper looking terminal.
oh man, ok, i’m more than “a little crazy”. after i posted this i decided i wanted more colors, and found out how to output any rgb color (the way i was doing it before limited me to 256 colors). been tweaking it all day between doing actual productive things, and now here’s what it looks like:
@katylava You’re so cool.
@katylava
Not sure how you could work with things being blurred out.
@mflassy haha, it’s just an internal codename for a project. nbd, but why have 0.0000001% risk when you can have 0.0000000% risk.
@katylava
You chose a blur for a codename? o_O
@katylava Can you post how to do that for normal mortals? Thank you.
@dashcloud normal mortals don’t use the terminal at all.
@katylava what terminal is that? Do you get multiple lines like that printed on top of each other, or do you have some kind of arrangement where it’s printed by the terminal emulator rather than the shell?
I’m… very lazy about mine. Beyond making sure that everything is UTF-8, I generally leave things alone.
That line of text is so aesthetic, I’m kind of envious.
@InnocuousFarmer iterm2 + zsh. all my dotfiles are on github. zsh is what gives me the right-side prompt. my prompt config is here… but that file was originally generated by a program, then heavily tweaked by me, so it’s not very easy to read.
Autumn is the best evah!
@mfladd
The intensity of fall color here has something to do with drought or no drought.
Right now no drought. I think that means it will be nice?
We can’t complete with VA or VT, but it’s quite pretty.
But we’re prob a month or two away from that yet.
@f00l Here it’s also related to steep temperature changes. Sometimes we’ll go from 90 to 50 overnight and the trees throw down all their still green leaves. Once in March it was sunny 80s in the morning and in two hours it dropped 50 degrees to the 30’s and pouring down snow. Altitude plus aridity = rapid temperature shifts.
@moondrake
We get that here: The 30-40 degree sudden temp drops. Just not as often as at your altitude.
I love EP.
If only it weren’t so damned far from everything.
OTOH, perhaps that’s a plus.
Last time I was there was for a Stones concert at the Sun Bowl in 2006.
The Sun Bowl is the best. As long as no one minds climbing a small mountain on foot to get to it. A fav stadium.
@f00l I was at a board game convention in Tucson this past weekend, and a lot of the players there were very surprised that we drove over 300 miles to their event. I told them that there are some advantages to living in the middle of nowhere. A 300 mile drive is a pleasant afternoon for us. A lot of people in the Phoenix/Tuscon area and the Austin/DFW/San Antonio area don’t travel much for conventions because they have a dozen within a hundred-mile radius each year. We drove 750 miles to Houston for a weekend game convention once. That was a bit mad. But if we want to go to a real convention we have to get out of town. Way out of town. Creates a rather large personal stomping ground.
You’ll have to wait a month for me to show you my fall colors, it’s still summer here. Just about the only tree that flourishes here and puts on a fall color show is the pistache. They are scarce but they are beautiful in the fall. I planted a baby in my front yard that’s grown into a lovely young tree.
We usually get pretty good color in Ohio, but this year it has been dry, dry, dry on the North Coast. The leaves in my area are just turning brown and falling off. Leaf pickup isn’t for another month in my town and some tree lawns already have three foot high piles.
The changing of the leaves was the thing I missed most when I was living in Florida. Seasons in Florida seem to consist of Summer and Not-Summer with the only difference being temperature variation from OMGWHEREAMITHESURFACEOFTHESUN? to pleasant.
@jbartus One of primary reasons I’ve turned down the multiple opportunities I’ve had to move to Florida. That and well, palmetto bugs. Bleh!
@cinoclav the variety of insect life down there, especially of the large variety, is kind of fascinating.
@jbartus Fascinating = Disgusting
@cinoclav i would like to live in florida but i’m terrified of the hurricanes.
i could evacuate easily, but i like all my stuff and i don’t want most of it to get wet.
@cinoclav That’s not a palmetto bug…
@jbartus And colorful. Lubber grasshoppers, anyway.
@OldCatLady yeah there were some really cool grasshoppers and such. Mantises are cool too.
@2many2no looks like a roach to me
@Kidsandliz Exactly, if you have roaches the size of a small bird that fly at you. You can hear them bumping the windows at night.
@2many2no Typically the big ones are American roaches and the smaller ones are German roaches. I supposed calling them palmetto bugs (when I lived in FL heard them called palmetto bugs and also heard them called water bugs on occasion) makes it sound less like a roach and more like something less disgusting and more exotic… but a roach is a roach is a roach in my book.
If they are indoors then they are preferably a dead roach. I just spent 16 months ridding my apt of roaches in a roach infested building (german ones although I saw a few american ones in the hall and ever so occasionally in my apt) and was finally more or less successful as I hadn’t seen one in 3 weeks. Then I move and now what do I have but american roaches. Both places also came with flour bugs. Totally sick of bugs inside my apt.
Also totally unwilling to spray/bomb the place as I already have one of the incurable non-hodgkin’s lymphomas and pesticides have been implicated in that. I sure as heck don’t need more exposure. The cats don’t need it either since they will pick up even a higher concentration as they hang out on the rugs. At least they help me kill the damn things. They view them as toys.
@cinoclav @jbartus I’m thoroughly with cino on this one. I might wish I was a good deal warmer and dryer than I am over in the PNW, but I don’t do bugs quite on the FL level. Nope.
Unfortunately, I’m in Alabama so it’s about the same here. 86 degrees. Ugh. I’m originally from New England. I miss autumn the most.
@lseeber Oh yeah… and I live in the woods… and by in the woods I mean… in the woods. I’m at the edge of a nat’l forest. If I try to decorate with hay bales, gourds, corn, pumpkins, etc… guaranteed something will crawl out of the woods on night one and rip it apart and eat what’s edible. That sucks!
@lseeber wow. I’d love to live by a forest.
