Zmodo Pivot 1080p 360° WiFi Camera with Smarthub and Window Sensors

  • With a rotating wide-angle lens and 1080p quality video, it might just be what Steven Soderbergh uses to make his next movie.
  • Comes with 2 door/window sensors (but no door/window censors, because if we don’t let our doors and windows speak their minds, who even are we anymore, know what I mean?)
  • You get an alert on your phone when motion is detected, but you can customize what areas of the live view will trigger it.
  • Zmodo says that the Pivot has “two-way audio to talk to family at home” but c’mon? You’re just going to use that to mess with your cats while you’re at work, right?
  • Built-in Bluetooth speaker, you know, for impromptu dance parties
  • 36 hours of free cloud storage; to replay video of said dance parties, of course
  • Uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection with WPA/WPA2 encryption.
  • Model number is ZM-SHP001B. Because that’s what it provides: SHP (Safe Home Pixels).

Put-down

When I was a kid, I got an Erector Set for Christmas. It had been at the top of my list that year, and I was so excited… until I opened the box. Gears? Screws? Hinges? How could I have possibly known something called an “Erector Set” required so much building?

At any rate, my dad and I tinkered with it (by which I mean, my dad tinkered with it while I stared longingly across the room at the Sega Genesis) for a couple hours. After making almost no progress, we stopped, put it aside, and vowed to come back to it later. We never touched it again. Instead, I quenched my thirst for amateur construction with the box of hand-me-down Legos. The collected sets of four “too old for this” cousins, it was an enormous assortment of mis-matched blocks, including pieces for everything from castle ramparts to submarines.

What’s my point? That it’s immoral to run commercials that present an overly simplistic picture of a product on channels primarily watched by kids during the holidays?

No. I’m just saying when it comes to actually following through on your plans, simpler is better. And this Zmodo Pivot is the simplest option when it comes to home security cameras. It’s the Legos to the 13-camera-mega-system’s Erector Set.

That’s what the reviews over on Amazon say, at least. Even some of the negative ones mention how easy it is to set up. And I can see why. Sure, there are motion detectors to place and apps to download, but when it comes to the camera…

Actually, here: let’s do a little exercise. Do you have a mug on your desk? Pick it up. Now, place it back where it was. Congratulations, you have just put in the effort it takes to install a Zmodo Pivot camera. You don’t have to figure out angles or mounting. You just find a surface and put it down. You can add additional cameras to the system if you want, of course, but I recommend you abide by the old acronym: K.I.S.S. “Keep it simple, super-great-Meh-customer.”
