Resolve not to overpay for earbuds.

Earbuds have their place. And it’s not in the Audio Quality Hall of Champions. If you need something that won’t bounce around when you’re running, or that you can cram into your jeans pocket, or for listening to podcasts on the bus, or that won’t get in your way when you’re drifting off to sleep, they’re fine.

If you actually want to hear some music, you can almost always get better-sounding headphones for the same price, except, maybe, way at the bottom end of the price range.

The incredible thing about these Yurbuds Venture PRO Sport Earbuds isn’t that they cost “just” $14 today. It’s that anyone ever paid 80 freaking dollars for them. No wonder the Amazon reviews are so bad. Anybody who pays $80 for earbuds got ripped off.

Yurbuds can go on and on about the ergonomically secure fit, the Kevlar cords, the ambient sound awareness and the “QuickClick magnet technology.” Indeed, they have to. Because they’re not going to tell you about the tiny, low-power drivers that all earbuds must have.

Obviously there are differences between earbud models. Rest assured that these sound orders of magnitude better than those widely reviled $3 pieces of shit we peddled at you that one time. While there’s a built-in low ceiling to earbud sound quality, some pairs are much closer to that ceiling than others.

But 80 bucks? Come on. You can get a great pair of headphones for that much money. Are they worth 30 bucks, maybe 40, tops? That’s in the ballpark, anyway. Seems reasonable for a “nice” pair of earbuds, by which we mean a pair of earbuds that are durable, well-constructed, fit nice and snug, and sound good for earbuds… but still sound like earbuds.

If you’ve ever paid more than that for a pair of earbuds, now’s the time to stop. Make it your New Year’s Resolution to only pay what earbuds are worth - or less. We’ll do what we can to help. We’re supportive like that.
