Wires Aren't THIS Bad
Is it possible that we’ve overdone it with our vilification of the humble wire?
I mean, sure, wires are inconvenient. They tangle. They get in the way. They limit your range of motion. All that stuff is legit. But are they really this inconvenient? As in: 2-pairs-of-earbuds-for-6-bucks inconvenient?
And by the way, I have a pair of these exact ones. And I’ll say it: they’re fine. Good, even. They’re not the most amazing earbuds I’ve ever heard, but on the days when I forget to charge my wireless ones and need to listen to some music or a podcast while I do the dishes–yes, my phone still has a headphone jack–these sound totally solid. Like, solid enough that, were they Bluetooth, a single pair might run you 40 to 70 dollars.
And I’m not the only one who thinks this, by the way. (About them being good, I mean; I have no idea if that valuation is accurate.) When we sold these during the April Fools’ Day Meh-rathon (for even cheaper than this, if you can believe it), @tchan said:
This is awesome price for Hi-res lossless headphones. The brand may be unheard, but the sound produced from these units are really good. I bought it here for $12 last time, just to try it out. I ended up using it regularly for my daily commute to work.
What a pleasant surprise! I kind of expected some meh earbuds but these are seriously legit for the price. They seem nicely built and sound better than any other headphones I won’t mind losing. If these come up again, I hope to get some more.
So, what’s the deal? Like, I know the headphone jack is mostly extinct now. But a lot of computers still have them, and there are adaptors. Have we all, collectively, heard the phrase ‘on-the-go’ so much that we believe ourselves to require more mobility than is actually necessary? Or are we in a weird “value valley”? You know, like you see with the previous generation or two of a game console? No longer new but not yet old enough to be nostalgic?
Really, the reason doesn’t matter. The point is, we’ve got them for cheap. So cheap, in fact, that you might even take the approach @jaynedough lays out:
I ordered for the pouch. The pouches are really useful
That’s right, folks, for just $6, we’ve got a 2-pack of pouches and a few earbud tips along with a wiry thing you can just throw directly into the trash. A pretty good deal, if you ask us.
