Turtle Beach Earforce i60 Wireless Gaming Headset with 7.1 Surround Sound
- About the best Bluetooth headphones you’ll ever get at this price, but you have to follow the setup instructions in the manual (save that link for future reference)
- Despite the “gaming headphones” label, that 7.1 surround sound is amazing for movies
- And the 50mm drivers and 20Hz - 20KHz frequency response range are awesome for music
- The uncompressed audio signal and dual-band interference-free Bluetooth connection are no slouches, either
- 10 hours of use per charge, comfy on the ear, solid to the touch
- So why are they so cheap? Because so many people refuse to RTFM
- Model: TBS-7020-01 (aw, man, we still haven’t watched any Conan on TBS since the last time this model number made us feel guilty about that)
To RTFM or Not to RTFM
Life’s too short to read every product manual. We all have to develop our own sense of when we need to stop and consult the documentation, and when it’s OK to blunder on ahead. If you’re building an IKEA dresser, or setting up a new game console, you should probably take a look at the manual. With a new fridge or TV, it depends on how complicated it is and how experienced you are. And with some items, like a mouse or a blowdryer or a pair of headphones, you pretty much never need the manual… except times like now.
This is one pair of headphones where you need to read the manual.
We can’t stress that enough. These Turtle Beach Ear Force headphones are a little more complicated than usual. They do great things, like 7.1 sound and Bluetooth and uncompressed audio. But for them to do those things, you have to do some things. If you want to get the most out of the dual noise-cancelling boom mics, the acoustically tuned 50mm drivers, and the dual-band interference-free wireless signal, you have to get your system ready for them. Seems reasonable.
Worst-case scenario, we’re talking about seven or eight steps of tweaking your settings. Should take all of five minutes. Even if you’re a congenital manualphobe, even if trying to follow directions fills you with unwarranted rage, you can choke back your rising gorge for five minutes, can’t you?
Keep in mind, too, that the reluctance of so many to RTFM is why these once expensive-ass cans are so cheap here today. A little preliminary fiddling around seems like a small price to pay for such a small price to pay.
