Pick-Your-12-Pack: Mezete Hummus Dips
- Build a variety pack of hummus that [select members of] our community loved!
- They use a “unique aseptic manufacturing process" so that it stays shelf-stable and contains more tahini (or something)
- It’s even cheaper this time because we got our hands on more (for less!)
- Best by 12/31/23 (it’s fine to eat after, but keep it in the fridge to prolong the flavor)
- Is it available in Georgia red: only with food coloring or if there is a terrible accident
Built Different
Okay, so:
As discussed last time, this is shelf-stable hummus. To achieve this shelf stability, Mezete employs something they call a “unique aseptic manufacturing process.” Additionally (according to Mezete), the process allows them to load in more tahini than other hummus brands.
This all sounds good and cool, but what we failed to appropriately highlight is that an entirely different production process, plus more tahini, means that this stuff won’t taste exactly like every other hummus you find in the grocery store cooler. No way. It’s going to be different.
And reactions to this difference were like hummus itself: mixed.
@fjp999 liked some of the flavors:
Red Hot Chili & Zesty are very tasty for me.
I received mine already. Only opened the Zesty Herb, but good enough to order another 2 flavors. I currently also have Red Pepper so I ordered Original and Red Hot Chili. I am pleased with my future dipping opportunities
Then, when we offered it during the recent Meh-rathon, even more reviews came in, all of them pretty positive, including this one from @Telanis:
I got this last time, pretty good. A little salty, but not crazy, and to be expected since it’s shelf stable unopened. The herb one (not here?) is fine, the red pepper one is good, the spicy one is great; I didn’t get the plain. Could be slightly smoother but it’s also “good enough” texturally.
@werehatrack was less impressed, though offered this tip to zhuzh up the ‘classic’ flavor:
Second flavor tried: Classic. Result: Sub-meh as received, but possible to transform into slightly above meh via the addition of garlic, salt, lemon, olive oil, and decent tahini.
And @Rstoker was even less impressed than that:
Tastes like old peanut butter. I had 6 friends try it and they all hated it too. One friend said she loves tahini and “that’s not tahini”.
(They did say in a follow-up post that the zesty was “not bad.”)
We include a few of these less-than-positive reviews in the interest of transparency. The approval rating is not 100% and you should know that going in. That being said, this is 12 tubs of hummus for 12 dollars. In other words, if your palate proves compatible and you actually like hummus, this is a steal. On the other hand, if you don’t like this stuff, you’re not even out 15 bucks.
The choice is yours!
