I bought the original and zesty the first time it was available here. Both tasted terrible. Original flavor has a harsh metallic taste that made me struggle to keep it down. The zesty has some extra flavor to cover up the harsh flavor of the original but still isn’t enough to make this a worthwhile purchase. Just buy hummus at the grocery store.
@docmatt1 while I didn’t detect any metallic taste in the spicy or za’tar flavors I picked up earlier, I am throwing the rest of my six tubs away because I’ve found the ‘velvety smooth’ texture repellant. Store bought or restaurant take out for me from now on!
@chiefbugbung@pakopako@RogerWilco
I was scornful when I first saw it, but I buy it now, because a slab of regular bacon always ends up going bad; I don’t cook it often enough. Plus this doesn’t leave me with such a greasy mess to clean up.
@awk Same thing here. We liked them all well enough.
It’s not the best gourmet food fresh-made in your kitchen by a celebrity chef or anything, but I think it was well worth what we paid for it. Even some of my kids will eat it; they were dipping carrots in it today after lunch.
@RogerWilco hummus can definitely be an acquired taste. But one year I ate at this mediterranean place next to my office at least 2 or 3 times a week… it then became my favorite cuisine ane I can’t get enough of all things mediterranean/greek/lebanese/middle eastern. Tzatziki, Tabnouleh, Roasted Cauliflower, Kafta/Kofta, Baba Ganoush, oh and HUMMUS!!
@troy The Middle Eastern chain Garbanzo started in CO, and it was fantastic at first. Then it got bought out (just like all good things, apparently) and got a lot less good and the one in my city closed. I’d still go but the nearest one is over 30 miles away.
@Kyeh@RogerWilco@troy If any of you get to Houston, we have plenty of good Middle Eastern restaurants, including a number that get national-cuisine-specific for one country, currently including places that specialize in Iranian (Persian), Afghani, Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, and several others. And the generic-whole-region chains Fadi’s and Aladdin (actually the same company, but Fadi’s has more on the menu) is reliably good stuff. And for Greek, the best is NikoNiko’s, particularly at their original location on Montrose Blvd, which has the distinction of having one of the longest streaks of no-violations reports from the Health Dept ever recorded. (And the food is actually good.)
@troy Tabbouleh is a favorite, especially in the summer when it’s made with our own fresh garden tomatoes and parsley. I love it that I was born Lebanese and that everyone in my family were (and still are) fantastic cooks!
@omally I assume the aseptic method is like how Parmalat makes shelf stable milk: boil everything at high pressure and vacuum seal it as it cools. (Pressure cooking definitely would bring out the mineral taste in the beans and oil.)
@omally@pakopako The texture of this hummus is much less coarse/more refined than normal hummus, so there’s definitely some kind of heat treatment involved to break it down to that level of consistency. But it works. It doesn’t taste or feel like some kind of survival ration or anything.
I picked up a six pack of the regular last time it was here. I have found it to be tasty enough, good with some garlic naan. I suspect that some of the packages have gone stale before others, leading to the difference in reviews.
@omally@pmarin I like how small the world is getting, but I’m a bit surprised it’s coming from Jordan. They have the beans, but they probably have to import the sesame from neighboring Egypt… Or farther. (The USA has a big supply of beans; Mexico has a lot of sesame, but it’s probably cheaper to ship it from South America, Africa, or Asia.) https://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data/QCL/visualize
I’m wondering if hummus (or some part of it) is like cilantro, in that some people love it but other people hate it? (maybe it’s the amount of tahini? this brand claims to have more…)
I got all the flavors last time, and we like them all well enough. But I see a lot of complaints (on last time’s discussion) about it being disgusting or inedible.
It’s not the best I’ve ever had, but certainly worth the time and money I put in to it, compared to buying or making it fresh.
But apparently it’s not a good flavor for some, so flip a coin and see if you feel lucky?
@xobzoo I’ve eaten plenty of hummus in my life, and there’s no way that this approaches any level of “disgusting” or “inedible.”
I’m gonna guess that those comments were coming from people who spent their entire lives drinking only soda and light beer, and only eating fries and chicken nuggies. I wish I were kidding, but I actually know more than one person like that.
@xobzoo there’s a lot of different recipes and styles of hummus and I’ve never found a commercial brand as good as a good hone made middle eastern mom recipe. And not every recipe people like. The amount or tahini and the overall acidity can make a huge difference
@ctownlocdoc On any low-priced item someone will mention this. Keep in mind that many (maybe most) regular users of this forum choose to pay a monthly fee instead, which also works on the other affiliated sites including the wine site.
But yes if you don’t choose to pay monthly, then you are correct that adding shipping is like adding an extra 50% of the total for an item like this. Your choice.
Bought some of these last time- very tasty, and comparable to most supermarket hummus. The plain is fairly typical, and not too garlicky or salty. The za’atar was very herb-y but the word “za’atar” does not appear ANYWHERE on the packaging. Strange, but still tasty. Nice on slices of English cucumber. A decent, and fairly healthy snack, if you have a taste for hummus. Good price, too. I might go for the roasted red pepper…
@MrNews You’ve gotta try the red pepper! I think you’ll like it. What do you think of the tahini flavor in these? I think it’s accurate in contrast to what @rstoker 's friend thought.
@MrNews@troy I think there must be something wrong with my plain flavor. The herb one was okay, but plain tasted like rancid peanut butter. Plain was the only one I had others try, but my wife and I both found the herb to be edible, but not better than the regular store brands.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the other flavor to try.
@Rstoker@troy I thought both the plain & the za’atar were tasty, but not remarkable, like all the supermarket brands (Boar’s Head, etc). The za’atar was favored by Mrs. News. The tahini seems fine, but there’s not much garlic flavor. My brother makes homemade hummus which is killer, but he unfortunately (for me) lives in England…
I have never had meh try me this hard hummus is my favorite food but I make my own, and I know this will taste like shit cuz I’ve tried similar out of hungry desperation. You beautiful bitches! Love you!
Well, this kind of sucks. Those of us who bought this two days ago spent 50% more. The items haven’t even shipped yet. Doesn’t really inspire confidence to jump on future sales. I’m gonna try asking for a cancellation, but I have a feeling I know what they’re gonna say.
@ShotgunX I understand where you’re coming from. The sale a couple days ago was still our older inventory that we bought for over 3x the cost. We bought this latest batch for a lot less (and a lot more of it, too), so with the dating fast approaching we thought we wouldn’t be able to move them quickly enough at the old pricing.
@troy Sure, I get it, but my point is that the orders haven’t even shipped yet, and you’re already lowering the price by so much. You’re going to be shipping all of these orders from a mixed inventory anyway, as some new orders are going to come from older stock that hasn’t sold out. That’s where the inherent unfairness is coming from.
Also, most reputable sites allow the cancellation of orders that haven’t even been processed yet, let alone shipped. I catch lower prices/coupons for Amazon S&S items and re-order all the time. And stores like Costco do price adjustments.
You sold ~145 orders during the meh-rathon. At $6 a pop, it’s not a big loss. But you could also hand out some $5 coupons, and that would be nearly as good.
I won’t be canceling my VMP over this or anything. Just my 2 cents as a long-time customer.
@ShotgunX@troy They DO NOT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT CUSTOMERS. They dropped the “experiments in e-commerce” but they experimented, and they decided we are all consumerist rubes who will buy actual trash. We will tell them, do not buy this! And they do!
So, at what point would someone who is 7 years into this shit–and, like me, never has received ANYTHING–for being a VMP.
They are like sadistic capatalistic tech bros. They are laughing their way to the bank with all the IRKs they send crap paint, expired trackers, and trash. Oh, and they will still take our monthly money with nothing to show.
@KNmeh7@ShotgunX@troy I appreciate your warning tone. But I have to ask, where is the question here:
“So, at what point would someone who is 7 years into this shit–and, like me, never has received ANYTHING–for being a VMP.”
@mehvid1 All red pepper will be from the most recent receipt. We still had some classic & hot chili from the older receipt, but they are all the same “batch” with the same dating.
@KNmeh7 They can buy whatever they want. It doesn’t mean that I will necessarily buy it from them, and I usually don’t. The amount of orders I make has decreased over the years, though I still buy enough every year to justify continuing my VMP because it saves money on shipping overall. Occasionally there are good products for a good price (like today).
@mehvid1 That in itself would be extremely unfair. The people who paid less would be getting the fresher product, despite the fact that all of these orders would effectively be shipping at the same time. If anything, the people buying the older stuff should be paying less, not more. Now quite frankly I don’t even want my order, if that’s what they’re going to do. Though practically, I fully expect them to co-mingle the inventories in a way that gets rid of the remaining older stuff using a portion of the newer orders.
Got original and red pepper last time it was on here. Both bad. Not even half good. It is possible, however, to turn it into a great hummus using fresh lemon juice and spices, so at this point they’re just hummus “shortcuts,” skipping the main parts of making hummus.
I’ve been enjoying the red pepper, haven’t tried the plain yet. It does turn out to be quite a bit of hummus, I didn’t really think through what 12 full-size hummus tubs would look like, but it’s a lot of hummus. Hope you like hummus!
got a truckload last time it was offered (with more flavors). Classic and pepper - offered today - are just delicious. Not sure why other ppl don’t like it. I’m European though, maybe I’m more accustomed to this smooth just chickpeas+tahini taste
I just finally got my order from the October sale last week… almost a month after the sale. (It ended up sitting at a FedEx location for over a week according to the tracking…) so will pass on this.
As to flavors: Got the extra spicy and the za’atar.
They are both a bit odd, but OK.
You can’t even get Frito Lay bean dip at these prices, and that’s what the “roasted red pepper” flavor tastes like. The plain needed a lot of help to make palatable. Ordered a second batch to try the spicy one, so everyone is getting hummus for Christmas.
@corgincognito quick comparison. Sams club has the refrigerated kind for basically the same price. I like spicy, especially since the kids don’t. Thinking about it but for rapidly expiring shelf stable food product it’s not a screaming deal or anything. It’s a gamble. Here it always is and the house always wins.
Thanks for the comments, everyone. I got two of the “red hot chili” because reviews here and elsewhere say it’s warm but not “red hot”. I got one of each of the others, because someone said the regular is good for customizing and that the red pepper tastes like the major brand refrigerated hummus.
And I reinstated my membership for the moment, because MorningSave has smart strip lights 2/$10 that normally run $20 each and the membership lets that ship free even though I can’t bundle it in the same order.
I ordered four 12 pack boxes of hummus on Nov.22, 2023 the product arrived December 1st. I was really excited to try the hummus. I ordered hot chili.roasted pepper and regular. I tried the hot chili first and thought it tasted kind of funny. Then noticed the expiration date. I thought oh that’s why it was so cheap. The product expires or Best buy date is December 2023. I certainly wouldn’t have bought four boxes of 12 each if I would have known they were going to expire in 30 days.
@rosskat They will be fine for the next few months.
They are shelf-stable, but we recommended to keep them in the fridge to prolong flavor. Any “funny” taste is due to the processing involved to make these shelf stable, not due to the dating.

12 clams, what the hell why not. this stuff isn’t that cheap anyway
I bought the original and zesty the first time it was available here. Both tasted terrible. Original flavor has a harsh metallic taste that made me struggle to keep it down. @docmatt1 Interesting – I can’t detect any metallic flavor but it’s definitely saltier than refrigerated hummus. I’ve probably consumed 10 tubs so far
@docmatt1 while I didn’t detect any metallic taste in the spicy or za’tar flavors I picked up earlier, I am throwing the rest of my six tubs away because I’ve found the ‘velvety smooth’ texture repellant. Store bought or restaurant take out for me from now on!
@docmatt1 @troy 10 tubs… if you were not a vegan before, you are one now.
It worked!

Should I trust the shelf stable hummus? Is it as good as shelf stable milk? Or shelf stable bacon?
@chiefbugbung
If it’s here on Meh you can trust it…
… … …
I’d totally buy shelf stable bacon from meh tho.
@chiefbugbung It’s bean dip.
@chiefbugbung @RogerWilco Wouldn’t shelf stable bacon be jerky?
@pakopako
I’d buy shelf stable bacon jerky from Meh too.
@chiefbugbung @pakopako @RogerWilco
I was scornful when I first saw it, but I buy it now, because a slab of regular bacon always ends up going bad; I don’t cook it often enough. Plus this doesn’t leave me with such a greasy mess to clean up.
I got them all last time, they are definitely edible, no regrets.

I’m surprised at how many hummus sales meh is finding.
I’m not a fan of hummus.
Just surprised.
@RogerWilco hummus can definitely be an acquired taste. You had me at Tzatziki.
(still not a fan of hummus)
@RogerWilco @troy
Baba Ganoush!!!
That’s my favorite, but so hard to find!
*Tabbouleh, I meant!
@troy The Middle Eastern chain Garbanzo started in CO, and it was fantastic at first. Then it got bought out (just like all good things, apparently) and got a lot less good and the one in my city closed. I’d still go but the nearest one is over 30 miles away.
@Kyeh
The one here in the springs is also “less good” than it used to be.
(hello colorado)
@RogerWilco Oh, hi! Yeah, the portions got smaller too.
@Kyeh @RogerWilco CAVA is my favorite as far as fast casual places go. Better than Zoe’s which got bought out by them
@RogerWilco @troy OOOO! That’s exciting - looks like there’s one nearby! I wasn’t impressed by Zoe’s either.
My favorite was a tiny hole-in-the-wall place years ago that was run by a Lebanese guy.
It’s been gone for decades though.
@Kyeh @RogerWilco @troy If any of you get to Houston, we have plenty of good Middle Eastern restaurants, including a number that get national-cuisine-specific for one country, currently including places that specialize in Iranian (Persian), Afghani, Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, and several others. @Lynnerizer @troy
Nice! It’s such healthy food too.
@Kyeh @RogerWilco @troy
@Kyeh @RogerWilco @troy Mmm. Aubergines.
i’ve tried the red pepper one so far, and it’s fine. you can hardly taste the aseptic manufacturing process.
@omally
lol.
@omally Red Pepper and Zesty are my favorite. I might actually prefer the red pepper over zesty, seems a bit less salty to me
@omally I assume the aseptic method is like how Parmalat makes shelf stable milk: boil everything at high pressure and vacuum seal it as it cools. (Pressure cooking definitely would bring out the mineral taste in the beans and oil.)
@omally @pakopako The texture of this hummus is much less coarse/more refined than normal hummus, so there’s definitely some kind of heat treatment involved to break it down to that level of consistency. But it works. It doesn’t taste or feel like some kind of survival ration or anything.

@awk @RogerWilco Ruby?
@awk googling for info on r is so annoying
@awk @RogerWilco @yakkoTDI it’s a little off the rails for that
@awk @pakopako @RogerWilco @yakkoTDI R♭ is my key.
They sell this product so much here they should just rebrand it Meh-zete.
NO HUMMAS FOR YOU TODAY!!!
Oxymoron alert: gourmet hummus! Who are you trying to fool?
I picked up a six pack of the regular last time it was here. I have found it to be tasty enough, good with some garlic naan. I suspect that some of the packages have gone stale before others, leading to the difference in reviews.
It says these are “imported” but I can’t see where it says which country they are imported from. Any idea?
@pmarin box says made in Jordan
@omally @pmarin I like how small the world is getting, but I’m a bit surprised it’s coming from Jordan. But apparently it’s not a good flavor for some, so flip a coin and see if you feel lucky?
@xobzoo I am guessing the “metal” flavor comes from the minerals in the sterilized (aseptic-ised?) sesame oil.
@pakopako @xobzoo If the tahini (or the sesame seeds it was made from) got heated enough to be “toasted”, that would account for it as well.

@KNmeh7 @ShotgunX @troy I appreciate your warning tone. But I have to ask, where is the question here:
“So, at what point would someone who is 7 years into this shit–and, like me, never has received ANYTHING–for being a VMP.”
@troy Should we interpret your remarks to be a guarantee that the goods being sold today will be the ones shipped to you most recently?
@mehvid1 All red pepper will be from the most recent receipt. We still had some classic & hot chili from the older receipt, but they are all the same “batch” with the same dating.

@troy Thanks for this specific info. Happy Thanksgiving!
@ShotgunX Sorry, my question quoting a remark was really just intended for @KNmeh7. Cheers, all!
I do like that the prices dropped because it’s still expiring… But I also wish there were the extra flavors.
@pakopako We actually issued our purchase order to include more zesty, but they were unfortunately cancelled
@troy I appreciate the combination of hummus and ramen you’ve put together. Or more precisely, provided so I could put together.
Got original and red pepper last time it was on here. Both bad. Not even half good. It is possible, however, to turn it into a great hummus using fresh lemon juice and spices, so at this point they’re just hummus “shortcuts,” skipping the main parts of making hummus.
@joshjohn77 “hummus helper”
@joshjohn77 @mehvid1 Yeah, that’s how I’m using it. Some extra olive oil, maybe some bottled sweet chili sauce, or gochujang; or a bunch of Kinder’s “The Blend” (my all-time favorite seasoning.) Or if you got the “Weak Knees Curry Sriracha” they sold here a while back, that does a nice job of improving it!
https://meh.com/forum/topics/sidedeal-daily-2-pack-weak-knees-curry-sriracha-hot-sauce
I’ve been enjoying the red pepper, haven’t tried the plain yet. It does turn out to be quite a bit of hummus, I didn’t really think through what 12 full-size hummus tubs would look like, but it’s a lot of hummus. Hope you like hummus!
I got these last month. Everyone who tried the za’atar flavor said it tasted was weird, and I’m a fan of za’atar. Stick to plain and zhuzh it up.
“Why the hell did you buy so much humus?” - Wife, when it arrived last month.
got a truckload last time it was offered (with more flavors).
I bought this last time, tried both flavors and didn’t like either. So, if you’re in Dallas and want a free 10 pack, hit me up next week!
And my wife also asked “Why the hell did you buy so much humus?”

Just barely edible.
Doesn’t have the “gritty” texture of hummus – it’s like they spun all the taste out of the garbanzo beans, so they wind up tasting a little gluey.
The taste isn’t horrible, but I don’t love it either. Would not buy again.
I bought the regular and red pepper. Finally cracked into them today. I’m impressed! Could be better, could be much worse
