Style is a legitimate reason to buy headphones.
It’s weird, this idea people have that a pair of headphones that’s too stylish must sound bad. They don’t make that judgment about other wearable items. They wouldn’t say that a good-looking watch must not keep very good time. They wouldn’t assume that a fashionable pair of glasses must have crappy lenses. But when it comes to headphones, it’s impossible for some people to believe that equal attention can be paid to the style outside and the guts inside.
Why can’t headphones be stylish, too?
We’re not saying a shmancy design magically turns a $75 pair of headphones into a pair worth paying $200 for. We get where that bias comes from (cough Beats cough). But as these headphones from the original incubators of Beats prove, it is possible for a set of cans to have both a distinctive look and a quality sound.
Yes, these DNA On-Ear Headphones from Monster (yes, the “cable people” if you’re from 2007, otherwise please try to keep up) have a sharp, original look. They also boast an average Amazon rating of 4.3 based on 483 customer reviews. You don’t get that many good reviews just by being another pretty face.
The sound is well-tuned and articulate and powerful. The ear cushions are comfortable and reasonably noise-isolating. They feel like they could stand up to regular backpack travel. Their look might not be everyone’s thing, but at least they’ve got a look. They’ve even got inputs to link multiple headsets together, which is kinda cute. OK, the original sticker price was a tad on the spendy side, but that’s not a problem today.
We tend toward the fashion-impaired ourselves, so we’re as surprised as anyone by how good these sound. The Monster DNA On-Ear Headphones even have us considering a style upgrade to our plastic digital watches.
