Creative Bluetooth Speaker System (Refurbished)
- Bluetooth range up to 10 meters, with the usual caveats
- Two satellite speakers and a detached down-firing subwoofer
- You have to plug it into an AC outlet, so it’s not portable
- Smaller than a breadbox
This is all it took to kill speaker docks.
There’s nothing particularly special about these Creative Bluetooth Speakers. You know the drill. They’re acceptable little speakers like you might connect to your PC, or keep on a bookshelf, or put in your kitchen to rock out to your MP3 player while you wash dishes. Ho to the hum, amirite?
And yet, thanks to Bluetooth, little speakers like these have toppled the speaker-dock colossus.
Because Bluetooth speakers can play audio from your Bluetooth-equipped phone or laptop without strapping the phone down to one inconvenient spot, while still connecting to any other audio source through the auxiliary-in jack. This simple - hell, let’s say this stupidly obvious concept has lain waste to an entire category, consigning speaker docks to history alongside Carthage, feudalism, and Current TV.
Don’t get us wrong. Creative’s a solid brand, and they know how to sling phrases around like “a wide acoustic sweet spot with improved sonic directivity to the listening area”. But these are basically just typical little speakers like you’ve heard a thousand times before.
Which, with Bluetooth, was all it took to wipe out speaker docks forever. Or until we run out of them, at least.
