The love that cannot speak its name.

A speaker with a lamp that pops up out of it? Sounds like a gimmick, a mongrel, a misbegotten abomination from the product design studio of Dr. Caligari.

Until you use one. And you realize that speakers and lamps tend to spring up in close proximity to each other on your desk, shelf, or nightstand. And how much space you save combining them.

That’s the epiphany that struck the Mehvotees who bought this last time - including me, Jason Toon, the guy who writes this stuff. Mine has pride of place about six inches to the right of my laptop stand. Throw in dimmable LEDs, Bluetooth and aux-in capability, and two USB charging ports (one at 2.1-amp tablet strength), and we’ve got a surprise hit on our hands.

So why hasn’t this lamp/speaker/charger hybrid become a whole product category of its own? All it needs is a shorter name that describes what kind of device this is. Let’s come up with one here, shouldn’t be too hard…

  • Lampker
  • Speamp
  • Splamkper
  • Illumplifier
  • Lumosonic
  • Talking Lamp
  • Singing Lamp
  • Podcasting Lamp
  • Noise Shiner
  • Soundie-Lightie
  • Speaker That Has A Lamp Attached To It

OK, OK, maybe we’re starting to see why this Bem Academia… thing hasn’t turned into the herald of a whole new category of product. It’ll just have to settle for being the best - and maybe only - soundie-lightie money can buy.
