Crossed Over

Whatever you use binoculars for, you probably need them to be waterproof. Whether hunting, birding, or creeping, most binocular-related activities take place in the elements. So it makes sense that these “Barska Crossover Binoculars” should resist them.

What makes less sense, however, is what makes them “crossover” binoculars, or, for that matter, what the word “crossover” even means anymore.

To learn more about crossover binoculars, we went to Google autocomplete:

Sure, we’ve all had our ankles broken by a devastating basketball crossover. And we’ve come to accept that “Crossover BMW” refers to a vehicle that looks like a car and has the gas mileage of an SUV. But crossover bags? Crossover bikes?

And crossover binoculars don’t even make the autocomplete cut. Onward, then:

We don’t know what a “crossover bikini” is but we assume it’s one sized between “eenie weenie” and “itsy bitsy.” And the internet can’t seem to agree on the proper form for crossover bicep curls. Do you do them like this?

Or like this?

Or like this (our favorite)?

And still no autocompletes for crossover binoculars even at “crossover bi-“ which means:

Finally, though our quarry is still second to “crossover bin folders.” And what do we learn about crossover binoculars when we finally search for them?

That it’s a term made up by Barska and used by no other binocular manufacturers. Sigh.

Let’s just say they’re a crossover between binoculars and waterproof … things.
