Dedankification

Ah, the unfinished basement.

Come even the warmest of warm months, it maintains its coolness with nary a wheeze of AC. Even in a house with powerful central air, emerging from the basement to the rest of the home always feels like traveling from the tundra to the tropics.

And yet, for so many, the basement is a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency area of the house to occupy. Only if the main cooling unit falters do we seek shelter in that frigid, subterranean oasis.

Why?

Maybe it’s the low ceilings, made even lower in places by various pipes and ducts jutting this way and that. Maybe it’s the lack of natural light. Maybe it’s the stuff that accumulates in a basement. While a crawl through the attic might represent a trip down memory lane, the stuff that ends up in the basement often fits into the category of “figure it out later”: a chair with a wobbly leg that you plan to fix but never will; a box of Tupperware lids that seem to fit no Tupperware; some random tools; the old vacuum; the old dining room set; a way station for junk, essentially.

But there’s another reason you likely don’t spend much time in the basement. The air, while of refreshing temperature, is also dank, and the walls often grow slick with condensation, especially in the humidity of spring and summer.

Will this Amazon Basics 22-Pint Dehumidifier fix that entirely? No. There’s an inherent basementiness to basements that no amount of moisture removal can unbasement. But it can help. And, more importantly, it can work to keep that general, unavoidable dankness from realizing its full, grotesque potential as mold and mildew.

Also, this one gets high ratings and usually runs for about a hundred more dollars than we’re selling it today. Pretty nice, right?

So get one and enjoy a basement that is not quite so dank (but not, like, not dank, because it is a basement, after all).
