Picture Power

Craig burst into the bedroom where Charlene lay reading a book before bed. “I can’t stand it, Charlene! I can’t stand it another instant!”

“Huh?” Charlene said looking up from her paperback.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know what this is about,” Craig said, tears forming in the corners of his eyes. “I found it again. Your phone. Pressed against a picture frame, blocking the subject of the photo within: me!”

“Oh, that’s actually a power thing,” Charlene said.

“I know it’s a power thing!” Craig cried. “I know it all too well! You’re trying to exert power over me, trying to send a message that will keep me on edge. ‘I could have any man I want. Do my bidding or else I’ll log onto this phone of mine and find a new beau.’ That’s what you’re trying to tell me, isn’t it? Well, I’m calling your bluff, Charlene! Here, take it!” Craig took Charlene’s phone out of his pocket and tossed it onto the bed next to her. “Go ahead! Log onto a dating site and find someone who will love you like I do! I dare you!”

Charlene picked the phone up. “It’s fully charged.”

“Oh, I couldn’t agree more,” Craig said. “The atmosphere in here is as charged as it’s ever been. Because I’m done putting my tail between my legs and playing your games.”

“No, Craig, I mean the phone.” Charlene held it up. “It’s fully charged.”

Craig stepped forward and squinted at the screen. “But how? It wasn’t even plugged in.”

“It’s the frame,” Charlene said. “It’s actually a charging pad.” Charlene pointed to the framed photo of her on Craig’s bedside table. “Yours is too. I got a two-pack.”

Craig took out his own phone and set it over the photo of Charlene. “Huh, will you look at that. But why?”

Charlene shrugged. “I guess because it’s less of an eyesore than some goofy-looking device.”

“Wait,” Craig said. “You mean a photo of me is more attractive than a clunky piece of charging technology?”

“Of course,” Charlene said.

Tears once again welled up in Craig’s eyes. “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me!”
