Let Go
If you, like me, are in your mid-30s, there’s a chance that the very concept of a magnetic phone mount makes you feel tingly and uncomfortable.
The reason for this is simple: you grew up as technology grew up. In grade school, there might’ve been a room of enormous computers on which you could learn to type or maybe do something with a “turtle” that made vibrant pixelated patterns on the screen.
In high school, the computers had internet access where, during times of low oversight, you could check in on ninja enthusiast Robert Hamburger or watch hamsters dance.
In college, you could hardwire into the network via the ethernet cable and message your friends about meeting up in the dining hall or email your teachers at 3am on the day an assignment was due to ask for an extension.
In other words, if you’re in your mid-30s, you likely had formative experiences with tech that was rapidly moving towards the kinds of stuff we have now, but not quite there yet. Cell phones weren’t waterproof, the internet didn’t float through the air, and if were to ever make the mistake of holding a magnet near your big bulky CRT monitor, you’d see a fun wavy swirl that signified digital death.
And thus, a device that not only features a magnet, but DEMANDS you to press your phone that is worth hundreds of dollars to it might still make you cringe. Sure, you understand that things have changed: that some devices can be rinsed in the sink; that your house is filled with an invisible router-generated cloud containing on billion cat videos and the totality of human knowledge; that if Robert Hamburger were a real person he’d be 31 years old; that hamsters don’t just dance anymore but sell Kias; and that your smart phone’s screen is likely as different from a CRT monitor as your CRT monitor was from a flip-book. And yet, old fears die hard.
But that’s why it’s so important to buy these. You don’t want to be like that uncle who triple-clicks every link on Wikipedia. You want to evolve with the times, which means learning to trust magnets around your devices.
Oh, also, they’re a convenient way to mount your phone, they’ll charge your phone as its mounted, and they’re great for easy use on-the-go or at home. Those are good reasons to buy them too.
