Colors, Dimming, That's About It

Let me be honest about something here: I’m a smart tech skeptic.

Okay, maybe that’s not the right way to put it. I believe smart technology can be helpful. I just don’t think it’s quite as helpful as smart technology evangelists want you to believe.

And furthermore, I think it’s a slippery slope. You get smart one piece of smart tech for your home, and it does something cool, and then they can’t stop acquiring more and more smart tech that is, in many ways, more and more impressive, and, in many other ways, more and more useless.

What I’m saying is that’s is a short journey from asking Alexa to play some dinner party music on Spotify to spending twenty minutes checking the ice crystal formation in your smart freezer back at home while you’re on vacation in Barbados.

Can you actually monitor stuff like that? I don’t know. Probably not. But it doesn’t seem that far off from actual things I’ve heard about.

Anyway, this is all to say, even though I refuse to buy a smart speaker, or set up a smart thermostat, or invest in a smart fridge, or do any of that, I still see these smart bulbs and think: You know, those actually seem pretty cool.

Maybe it’s the fun of it all. Smart bulbs, unlike so many things in the smart home product category, don’t seem to pitch themselves as a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. You can dim them. You can turn them fun colors. And that’s about it.

This is also probably why we end up with so many smart bulbs here on Meh.

“They’re kinda silly and fun,” isn’t a great sales pitch when you’re spending big bucks for a single bulb. But it’s totally reasonable when you can get 12 of them for $29.99.

So get some and have a little fun with your lighting.
