“Gregory was always so demeaning to me,” Collins said. “Always talking about how he was working on a space mission, and being real braggy about it. Saying things like, ‘I’m working on a space mission, and I’m very excited because it’s the culmination of my professional goals.’ Terribly arrogant, right? That’s why I decided I was going to really stick it to him. On the morning of the big launch, I managed to subdue him and take his access pass, and then I came in to assume his identity. Therefore, when it came time to train you on the Gemini-5000, I didn’t know about the crashing thing. In fact, I didn’t really know anything about the spacecraft. I’d found a post-it in Gregory’s office a bit before you arrived that said: ‘Don’t forget: Youssef (You) designed a super secret emergency spacecraft, the Gemini-5000.’”
“So that’s why, whenever I asked how to do something during our training session, you said, ‘Hmm, I don’t know. How do you think you would do that?’” said Jane.
“Exactly,” Collins said. “You basically trained yourself. I just assumed, reasonably, that you wouldn’t want to crash it.”
