I think Princess would be jealous if I bought another bird (even a toy one) into the house especially if it could fly and she doesn’t give any indication that she either wants or knows how to fly.
I know in my heart that this will only be mildly entertaining to an adult for about the first battery pack. Vaguely amusing for about the life of the second battery. I will lose interest almost completely while waiting for the first battery to finish recharging. And it will probably be either broken or stuck on the roof by then too. But I still kind of want it anyway. It might be better than the rubber band ones they used to sell in the mall when I was a kid.
@blaineg what had happened was I remembered I had a $5 coupon in my inbox, and once I knew that I just had to order one. It didn’t make any sense not to!
Thinking about getting a couple for my niece and nephew (ages 4 and 6) They’ll probably destroy them within an hour or so, but hopefully have some fun with them until that happens.
Curious if two of them can be flown independently at the same time on different channels?
Many years ago I had a dragonfly version of a remote control ornithopter like this. It was fascinating and frustrating. We had a large office area we were expanding into and when all the old cubicles were removed I had a few weeks to try and fly it in an indoor windless environment. It is very easy to steer but very hard to do level flight for any distance, as the tail is a key component in controlling pitch, and it constantly is being flapped around in the turbulence generated by the 4 wings.
Outdoor flight requires a completely windless day but it was a crowd pleaser.
20 bucks is a good price if all you expect is a learning experience, but don’t plan on this flying anywhere near as controllably as a quadcopter, for example.
I think that the person that was considering this for a 5 year old will have a very brief engagement result with a kid at that age trying to control it. Plus, to make this super light it is super fragile and repairs are challenging. Mine came with a spare set of wings and those got employed within the first 10 flights.
Tempting, but been there.
@Jonas4321 Sounds fun, your experience in an indoor office area. A company I worked for moved into a new building with some unused space for future expansion. I do remember frisbee going on in there once, but never flying birds or planes. (or Underdogs)
Sounds like you’ve analysed the aerodynamic flaw in the stability.
Still seems fun to try, as you said. probably not for a 5 year old but maybe good for a 60 year old.
@pmarin if you are intrigued by flying things and have a $20 bill you can afford to burn, absolutely try this. I paid $50 for mine and at the time never considered it a waste of money. I went on to building quadcopters as they were so much more controllable and I don’t think I have more than average hand/eye coordination.
Many years ago I a Air Hogs RC V-Wing Avenger which looked like these. It was loads of fun flying it in a circle in the living room driving the cats nuts.
It had clear instructions to never catch it in the air. But it was really easy to catch in the air. Until that last time when I broke it.
I am in for the cardinal! I got cats that need harassing.
If you get good with this one, you can move up to the advanced model: https://a.co/d/difaKhe
It costs a LOT more and looks like it has servos controlling the tail surfaces too. But it still flies more like a pigeon than an eagle.
Personally I think something like this would be fun. Especially if you can dive in front of people, roll inverted, and pull out upside down and soar away. Just to mess with people’s heads at the beach.
ended up choosing the parrot. Based on other comments not sure how long it will actually live, if it’s alive at all when I get it. As I selected the parrot, it reminded me of this from Monty Python.
I almost made it through an entire battery. I got gutsy and hit the right circle button. It did a half circle and turned the opposite direction crashing in to a canal. Womp womp…
I bought the cardinal for myself as a birthday gift, I went outside to play with it and went until the battery died. I had a lot of fun. Then I came back in and my girlfriend broke up with me, so I’m not sure I can fully recommend this product.
@CSobol You weren’t supposed to use the battery from her toy for the bird. The breakup probably happened weeks ago, you just weren’t told until it was necessary. Cheer up, in the end, you probably dodged a bullet. If she was ready to break up over you having fun with a bird, imagine what could’ve have happened if you had gotten a couple of speaker flashlight battery banks for your anniversary?

@yakkoTDI Somehow I knew it was the cats really running things.
Looks like great exercise for my outdoor cats.
They think just because it is hitting 100 plus (actual temperature) they get to lounge around on the deck in the shade all day.

@Felton10 Who knows, she’s just weird enough, it might give her the motivation she needs. Don’t underestimate the power of a little competition!
I know know what to drive my neighbor’s cat nuts with.
Obligatory Birds Aren’t Real comment
@dalekjoe Yeah I didn’t know about that whole thing. Had to look it up. Now I can share it with my in-laws that believe in chemtrails.
@dalekjoe i am so fucking sick of that ‘joke’
I’ve got a couple of birds for you, Meh.
@ircon96 This kind?
@Kyeh I can neither confirm nor deny… (but, yeah )
@ircon96
Dare I say… This MEH is for the birds!

Thanks for bringing something weird today, Meh!
Update:

@djslack You’re a bad influence.
@blaineg what had happened was I remembered I had a $5 coupon in my inbox, and once I knew that I just had to order one. It didn’t make any sense not to!
@djslack I better go look for a coupon.
@djslack Meh. I had one, but it expired unused.
Meh.
Where are the pictures of men playing with these birds?
@hchavers Those are locked behind Mehemium.
Thinking about getting a couple for my niece and nephew (ages 4 and 6) They’ll probably destroy them within an hour or so, but hopefully have some fun with them until that happens.
Curious if two of them can be flown independently at the same time on different channels?
@ciabelle the remotes pair to the birds so this indicates that they’re digital and you’d have no problem flying multiple together.
CATS CATS CATS
@dvermilion in that case the bird was asking for it. I think the cat courts would rule that justified
@dvermilion @pmarin I wonder how many times he got away with it?
@dvermilion @pmarin A friend ruined the fun by saying the bird was probably protecting its nest.
@blaineg @dvermilion @pmarin
The bird might still have gotten away …

If I get one of each color, can two people fly them at the same time, or will the signals interfere?
@Seeds the remotes and birds pair so interference shouldn’t be an issue.
@djslack awesome ty!

@carlosps That’s terrifying.
These are for the birds!.., err…, the grandkids

@gfreek Yep, did you not know that is one of the Hidden features! hehehe. But you will get Fried bird!

@gfreek Just like microwave charging iPhones.

The ratio of grandkids to GoGo remote control birds is too great! I could only buy 4 GoGos…, and I have a lot more grandkids
I thought about getting one of these for my daughter, but I don’t think she would be impressed since she gets to play with the real thing.
@macromeh Impressive! Going for the expensive and time-consuming mind-control path.

@blaineg maybe, if you’re good enough with it? Probably hurts to learn though.

Ordered a parrot, got a cardinal.
Now I have 2 cardinals. Boo
