@brainmist I lost power once for 8 days and the power company kept insisting we had power (entire block didn’t have it). Fortunately it was winter so I put all the food in boxes on the screened in back porch. Across the street where they got their power back after 12 hours someone loaned me a propane heater (that the cats claimed as theirs) and, fortunately, could still cook on the gas stove. Had to leave the water dripping and after extensive arguments with the power company got them to pay the extra part of my water bill since they kept telling us we had power, the problem was us. Nope. Was a tree down on the power line feeding our block.
Depends on if I know why, and where I was living at the time. When I was up in Monterey it was oh f*** not again. And what am I going to do for food. Because you don’t want to open the fridge. Down here in Southern California it’s not off for very long when it goes off usually so I don’t worry too much about it but if we’re to happen then I guess we’d say. Even what except for one time up in Monterey I had internet. Not on my TV or my desktop but my phone had it so so did everything else as long as the cell towers are up and running cool. Now when they go down it’s a different story I basically said in the dark with flashlight and red and then when I had to plug the tablet in because it was draining faster than the little device was charging I’d switch to my phone for a little while
The wife wants to talk (aka ask about feelings) instead of browse Facebook, watch a sitcom rerun (again), or heat-up something from the fridge. How can any husband survive?
Damn power company. We lose power here probably an average of 3 times a month for no apparent reason. We don’t have bad weather or any excuses I know of. Just overpriced intermittent electricity.
@tweezak For a while that was how we were losing water. Only it could be out for a week or more (worst was a bit over 3 weeks) not to mention all the boil water notices that often came with low water pressure. The big issue was toilet flushing as that took 3 gallons per flush. And you’d have to drive to another town (think suburb about 6 miles away) to fill out camping 5 gallon water containers. Fortunately not happening as much as it used to but OMG that was bad when it was going on.
Damn it, now I have a justification for all this shit I’ve been hoarding from meh. (battery bank, power station, emergency food rations, wine, extra underwear…)
My power just went out. What genius marketing by meh!
It’s mostly annoying because I’m trying to sleep and the power has turned on and off a few times before it finally gave up. I’ve got a bunch of smart lights and every time it resets they all turn on.
People lose power? Like, a lot? We hardly ever lose power. If it does go out, it’s back on in 5 to 10 minutes. In fact, we’ve probably only lost power for longer than 12 hours, 2 maybe 3 times in the last 18 years.
@xobzoo The other flavors are continually restocked. Pink is the SHTF reserve flavor, as by then I’ve probably been without for so long that I likely won’t care what it tastes like anymore.
@kuoh I’m just lucky I guess. It’s usually something in the electronics that dies, but the front panel still claims things are fine. Both APC and CyberPower.
@blaineg A lot of people aren’t aware that even when a UPS appears totally dead, it’s often just the batteries as without some internal power, they won’t light up any of the LEDs or display even when plugged in to a live source. APCs are notorious for this and I can’t begin to count how many good units my work has trashed and those 1500VA rackmounts aren’t cheap.
Hope it comes back fast or stays down long enough to justify getting the gas generator connected and the solar generator hooked up (daytime) or powering the small stuff, computers, fans, lights inside (night time).
The gas generator can run the portable A/C and we have portable propane heat so at least one room will remain comfortable…
Dammit, the hurricane is here…
I hope it comes back before the temperature gets too sweaty.
Dammit, I’d better make the rounds of the various devices on UPS units and put them into a graceful shutdown.
All other considerations come later.
@werehatrack BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
Dammit, it’s way too quiet.
Thoughts move from the top of the list of choices downward, the longer the power remains out.
@PooltoyWolf Yes! This!
Wow! That generator turned on fast.
In 2020, I lost power for 4 days but, through strategic deployment of frozen things into the fridge, managed to only lose the milk.

Dammit no hot water. In the dead of winter dammit no heat.
@heartny Fortunately, I haven’t lost gas (although I have lost a water heater and a gas furnace).
Dammit, no air conditioning!

@hchavers Count your blessings, light some candles, have a good canoodle, and hope for more power outages?
@brainmist @hchavers umm…snicker…make out?
@brainmist @hchavers @Kidsandliz and then some!
Damn power company. We lose power here probably an average of 3 times a month for no apparent reason. We don’t have bad weather or any excuses I know of. Just overpriced intermittent electricity.
@tweezak Maybe old wiring? I get blips on a very regular basis; I’ve stopped resetting oven clocks.

@Kidsandliz @tweezak Where do you live? So I can never go there…
@Kidsandliz @zinimusprime Oregon. It used to be a great state until it was completely ruined by Californians. Stay away.
Damn it, now I have a justification for all this shit I’ve been hoarding from meh. (battery bank, power station, emergency food rations, wine, extra underwear…)
@caffeineguy haw,haw x10
@heartny that is great!
@heartny but isn’t a Doctor a plumber, electrician, and mechanic…
if looked at
@earlyre @heartny Ortho surgeons are just overpaid carpenters.

@Knightp My CO detector gives a loud “whoop” when the power goes out and back on, so I can relate.
Usually worry about the fridge because I hate cleaning.
Time to hookup the generator and power the necessities up.
Dammit, no sump pump.
I lived in South Florida most of my life. Of course, I have a full house generator.( It does take a few seconds to start up. )
@olperfesser I also live in the south, not FLA. Yes we have one too!

This is a very good reason to put on Solar Panels on the roof.
Awe crap, where is my battery my phone is only on 30%.
Dammit, no AC (in summer)
Begin the 2 hour countdown to eat all the ice cream before it melts, even the 4 month old triple stripe with only the pink flavor left in the middle!
KuoH
@kuoh How do you still have 4-month-old ice cream in any flavor?
@xobzoo The other flavors are continually restocked. Pink is the SHTF reserve flavor, as by then I’ve probably been without for so long that I likely won’t care what it tastes like anymore.

Well, looks like another UPS died silently.
@blaineg The UPS is fine, it’s just letting you know not to cheap out on the replacement batteries.
KuoH

/showme Oh no! The power is out but I have a working generator!
@mediocrebot and hopefully open windows and a carbon monoxide detector!
