I’m not going to turn on the radio right now, but the last time I recall the local NPR affiliate playing a song I (sort of) knew the words to was part of 99 Luftballoons a couple of weeks ago.
I would not recognize Nena if I saw her.
I don’t know how long it will be before I hear them play another song with lyrics that I recognize.
Probably not because when I was into popular music enough to memorize lyrics was long enough ago that the artists will be old and wrinkly now, if they’re even alive.
That said the image of Olivia Newton John when she was singing her greatest songs lives in my memory forever.
Something on the radio? Unlikely. I know a lot of the lyrics to songs at work, but I don’t like the songs or artists. It just sticks with you when you listen to them every single day.
Lots of variables here, including the dead/living singer debate, and a big one being “favorite station”. The “Beatles Channel” on XM radio is the one I like the best, but I really am a station hopper in the car (my primary radio-listening time) and I probably am tuned to it less than 5% of the time. But designating it as my “favorite” would put me at close to 50 or 100% depending on the dead/alive criteria.
Turned on the radio to try it out. CCR came on. Knew the words, and the chords, and have played it more than a few times at camp. “Have you ever seen the rain.” I’m pretty sure I would recognize John, not so sure about the rest of the band.
Only if the radio station is playing Steely Dan, only if it’s Donald Fagen. Mostly because I wouldn’t recognize Walter Becker, but also because he is dead. On the other hand, I might think Donald Fagen is actor David Paymer briefly, who knows?
If I know the words to a song, most likely. But I know the words to one song and I’ve never seen the musicians.

@therealjrn would that play on your favorite radio station?
@CaptAmehrican Maybe. Don’t judge me.
Prob not.

There are maybe 3? musicians in the world that I would recognize by sight… and I’m not sure that they’re all still alive.
@arielleslie Yeah, being dead could make them a lot harder to recognize.
Definitely not. Until a handful of years back, I had thought Jimi Hendrix was a white guy
@moonhat
@djslack love it! thanks!

Bands I really like? At least the lead singer.

@enville Ohhh, they just followed up with “Money for nothing”. Definitely would recognize Mark Knopfler!
It depends on the genre. Pop? Probably. Rock? Probably. EDM? Lol no.
No, but if you hum a few bars, I’ll, uh, recognize YOU.
Maybe.
Does my neighbor (Martha Davis of The Motels) count?
Although I admit that I didn’t recognize her until another neighbor pointed out to me who she was (is?). I notice that her 80’s hit “Suddenly Last Summer” is getting new interest since the upcoming season of AHS is using it for the promos: https://variety.com/2019/music/news/american-horror-story-song-motels-suddenly-last-summer-1203305613
Good for her!
@macromeh I wouldn’t recognize her face, but her voice…
