@sohmageek I've got an idea. Stick with me here. Start a new forum thread all about such classy interactions at mehtizens favorite eating holes and let's see where this baby takes us.
World of Coca Cola. It's awesome... try Beverly ;) Also Pit Pat's front porch is awesome to eat at. I can ask the wife where else she really liked in Atlanta, She was stuck there for a few months off and on with training with her job 5 years ago.
@sohmageek World of Coca-Cola is like a pavilion EPCOT rejected for being too commercial and having no real educational value. The only really cool part was the soda tasting and the "free" bottle of Coke you get at the end, but I'm not sure it was worth the price of admission.
@sohmageek I have been to Pitty Pat's several times. I was underwhelmed. I guess it's famous for the shtick they do, but I think it's overpriced for the food quality.
@DaveInSoCal Absolutely! It is amazing and so worth it to go. Don't rush, plan on being there for several hours. Also, World of Coca-Cola is right next to it--get a combo ticket and do both.
@Kleineleh Yup, you remembered right. About 9 years ago we had a corporate event there after hours. We had a catered dinner and all the time in the world to explore the aquarium. It was awesome.
@DaveInSoCal I really liked that aquarium. I was there for a conference and won 2 tickets for a behind the scenes tour. Got to feed the belugas from above. Seriously cool. Took a random 8 year old with me whom I overheard telling his mother all sorts of cool things about fish and how he wanted to train dolphins when he grew up. He was beyond thrilled.
@mfladd I was sort of surprised his mother let him go with us. It was a private tour, just the two of us and I told the tour guide to make it kid memorable. So we got to feed the whales which was not usually on the agenda.
Skip the standard sides and try the Brunswick stew, mac n cheese, and the collard greens.
Have the chicken and ribs combo with extra sides.
Enjoy the music and have a beer.
Daddy D'z BBQ has the best fried green tomatoes and great BBQ, and The Bone Lick is pretty damn good too.
Have fun!
If you need a strip club recommend try Fannie's Cabaret. Their Website has a door pass you can print off. Save a few bucks. Ask for Dani if she is working.
Having lived in Atlanta, I think it's a great place to visit.
Here are a few things... - Georgia Aquarium: probably the only touristy thing that's worth it - Piedmont park: you can spend a ton of time just roaming around. Botanical gardens are sweet - Little Five Points: great place for alternative shops and you can eat at The Vortex - Tabernacle: my favorite venue, an old church turned into a music hall - Brick Store Pub: one of the best bars in the country for beer
There are tons of things to do outdoors - baseball, Kennesaw or Stone Mountain, Chattahoochee river... The same goes for dining options. If I had to pick one spot, I'd recommend Hankook Taqueria: cheap and delicious Korean BBQ tacos.
@hashybrown Hmm, I haven't tried Hankook before, but that sounds awesome. And it looks like it's not far from my house. Screw it, I'm going there right now.
Vortex in Little Five Points. Get a bypass burger. Its a must. Depending on where you are in the ATL, if you are on the south side near Union City I highly recommend you hit Tavern on 74 (on highway 74) and get yourself some wings. They are fantastic, best I've ever had, and I've had a lot of wings from different places.
Where in Atlanta are you staying and what kind of transportation do you have? If you're staying through Labor Day weekend, DragonCon is a must see (shitfest).
Not food related, but if you're into art/architecture/history/culture-y type stuff, check out the Fox Theatre. I was there for about a week a few years ago and was constantly mesmerized by my surroundings
Food? In Atlanta? I don't know where you are, but I'll give you a rundown of some of the best I've found:
Barbeque: Bonelick. West Midtown. Can't stand the area, but the barbeque's so good you'll suffer through it. It's dry rub at its best, with several different locales worth of sauce
Korean: So Kong Dong on Buford. Eat the spare ribs with your soup.
Vietnamese: Quoc Huong, right down the road. Best barbeque bahn mi sandwich.... ever.
Brewpub: Someone else told you about Brickhouse, and it's great, but right down the road is Twains, where they brew the beer in house and the foods good too.
Japanese: Time to head up 85 to Haru Ichiban to eat with all of the Japanese folk in Atlanta, Seriously, there are, like, 20 Japanese people in Atlanta, and they only eat out here. Best sushi I've had. And you can mail a package and get chiropractic while you're there!

okay. I've re-lived some of my ga college days. Some of this info may be dated but, hope you have fun with what ever you do! Don't hesitate to use Marta. Most bus drivers are nice and will help you out if you get lost.
Definitely should walk up Stone Mountain and stay for the Laser Show. My go-to things for entertaining/impressing out-of-towners. They don't have this anywhere else in the world...
Whatever you do don't drive there, it gets a little overwhelming. Fry's has a store there and tiger direct, and there is a tractor supply warehouse there. What more do you need?
@cranky1950 haha I've been driving here for a few days. I've been all over and gotten into a few bad traffic back ups. So far it hasn't been much worse than Raleigh. I'm a roadway engineer so I really don't have a choice :-)
Is there a Taco Bell? Because if there is you should eat at Taco Bell. I like Taco Bell.
@MEHcus Remind me some time to tell you about the classy interaction at Taco Bell I had.. :)
@sohmageek I've got an idea. Stick with me here. Start a new forum thread all about such classy interactions at mehtizens favorite eating holes and let's see where this baby takes us.
@MEHcus
@RedHot You sure you didn't eat at The Varsity? That's some powerful rumbling.
World of Coca Cola. It's awesome... try Beverly ;) Also Pit Pat's front porch is awesome to eat at. I can ask the wife where else she really liked in Atlanta, She was stuck there for a few months off and on with training with her job 5 years ago.

I've heard really good things about this place: https://thevortexatl.com/
@telepheedian It is indeed awesome.
@telepheedian The Vortex is the bomb.
I went to the aquarium once. It was glorious.
@DaveInSoCal I second the aquarium. I was only in Atlanta for a couple of days, but the aquarium was very nice.
@DaveInSoCal Absolutely! It is amazing and so worth it to go. Don't rush, plan on being there for several hours.
Also, World of Coca-Cola is right next to it--get a combo ticket and do both.
@DaveInSoCal Is that the one with the tunnel-type tank you walk through? I'm pretty sure I went to that one and really liked it.
@Kleineleh It is.
@DaveInSoCal I pretty much hated the entire time I spent in Atlanta. Except the time at the aquarium. Fuckin' whale sharks, folks.
Eh, there was an okay garden someplace too.
@DaveInSoCal The aquarium was well worth the price of admission. I spent half a day there and it wasn't nearly enough time. I'd definitely go back.
@mfladd Ok, yeah, that place was pretty sweet. I was traveling a lot when I was there so wasn't sure if I got my cities mixed up
@Kleineleh Yup, you remembered right.
@Kidsandliz That's awesome. Very nice of you!
@mfladd I was sort of surprised his mother let him go with us. It was a private tour, just the two of us and I told the tour guide to make it kid memorable. So we got to feed the whales which was not usually on the agenda.
so you're in diagnostics? (maybe not if it's the next 4-6 weeks tho hmmm)
@Lotsofgoats I'm a civil engineer, I'm working on a design-build persuit.
Gotta try the Varsity - a local classic
@podhokie I second this one!
@podhokie As an outsider that has moved to Atlanta, I don't get the hype. Historic, yes, but overpriced and mediocre. Wife loves it though.
@telepheedian As a long-time Atlanta resident, you're correct. Avoid the Varsity. This town has so many amazing restaurants.
@podhokie This also.
If you don't have them where you live--go to Chick-fil-a!
@Prissy Chick-fil-a and Checkers
@Prissy I'm from Raleigh, NC so we do have chik-fil-a and yes it's awesome.
ALL THE WAFFLE HOUSES
@The_Baron Amen, Brother!!
You should probably eat some fried chicken and soul food.
Wish I could give more specific examples but I haven't made it over to Atlanta yet.
@JonT They had the best chicken and waffles I've ever had and grits to die for out there!
Fat Matt's Rib Shack - 1811 Piedmont Rd NE.
Worth it.

Come to think of it, The Bone Lick would make a hell of a name for a strip club.
@Pavlov It's "Bone Lick" but I think your point still stands
@Pavlov there's a place at the Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego called the Strip Club.
They only serve steaks though.
Having lived in Atlanta, I think it's a great place to visit.

@dunda Hopefully you got to try the pork taco and fried sweet potato!
@hashybrown If you're on the Smyrna end of town, try El Taco Veloz on Windy Hill. The tortas are fantastic, especially the milanesa and barbacoa.
Clermont Lounge
Argosy.
Amazing food (try the collard greens), and spectacular craft beer selection.
http://argosy-east.com/
Drink all the Pepsi products you can find!
@dashcloud
@dashcloud Thats like saying go to Vermont to drink PBR...
@dunda you look tired, have some pepsi max

@versabox If you're staying through Labor Day weekend, don't try to drive ANYWHERE.
@dunda amen
@versabox DRAAAAGOOOONCOOOOOOOOON!!! WOOOOOOOO! (I just got done with that, AMAZING, AS ALWAYS.) lol
If you like authentic Italian pizza, definitely hit up Antico on Hemphill Ave. They fly in their ingredients from Italy every week or two.
@dunda Antico took the place of the cool French deli that had been there for 20 ish years. Glad to hear the quality is the same.
@dunda going here tonight! thanks!
@RedHot Sweet! I'd come meet you (I live just down the street), but I'll be out at a class tonight. Parking can sometimes be tricky, FYI.
It's been quite a while since I was n Atlanta, but I'd suggest checking out the Underground.
@beachbum Only if you like being bored and paying for overpriced crap.
Brick Store Pub is one of the best beer bars in the world.
Not food related, but if you're into art/architecture/history/culture-y type stuff, check out the Fox Theatre. I was there for about a week a few years ago and was constantly mesmerized by my surroundings
Try Eats on Ponce (2 choices: Jerk Chicken & black beans or Pasta) or Manuel's Tavern on North Ave at Highland.
Nap on all the IKEA sofas, too.

@astanford I'm adding Bonelick and twains to the list. They're taking me to Brick house thursday. thanks for the suggestions!
