Winter weather bragging
12It was so cold here… It was so warm here… Let it all out. “GLUGGAVEÐUR (gloo-ga-meth-oor) is an Icelandic word literally translating as window weather. It conveys the idea of a weather that is nice to look at, but not nice to be in – a weather best experienced from the comfort of your own home, safely behind a window.”- source Sharyn McCrumb FB

We tied a record for cold temperature: 10 degrees. Yeah, yeah, no whoop for people north and west of us but that’s pretty cold in the south.
We hit the teens a few times at night. . It’s been in the single digits some in past years.
I don’t mind the bitter cold so much. I do mind the extended cold.
And I hate the ice storms.
My new favorite word.
@speediedelivery @daveinwarsh @sohmageek @etal how’d you get the tree icon? What did i miss? Is this if you live somewhere cold/snowy? If so i am in. Just moved to Erie, yup that Erie that was in the news a week ago for 50" of snow in 2 days. Luckily we bought our snowblower 2 weeks earlier!
@mollama They participated in the 12 Days of Xmas video. I’m jealous too.
@speediedelivery It is a cool little tree icon…
@daveinwarsh Showoff.
@mollama You moved to around 60ish miles from where my mom lives. I used to drive through there on a closed (due to snow which meant don’t get off since they wouldn’t let you back on) freeway coming home from Rochester, NY way back when…
@mollama Grew up there. “Lake effect snow,” three of the worst words in the English language.
@mollama Hi, neighbor! I am just outside Erie. How did you chose to be here, the snow? Overall it is not a bad place to be.
@daveinwarsh Good looking badge there

@ruouttaurmind
See you in August.
@ruouttaurmind Who cares? You have the giant cockroaches that fly away with infants, and small children. (Yeah, kinda gross, but at least it’s close)
/image giant cockroach
@f00l But the 8 months of this weather is why I tolerate the 3 months of that weather.
@Shrdlu For reals? In the many years I’ve lived here I can’t say I’ve ever seen a giant flying cockroach carry away any small children. Sure, a few have swooped down and grabbed steaks off the grill while I was bbqing, but the damn things left all the children behind.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ruouttaurmind don’t like you no more!
I don’t want to make anyone feel bad so I won’t post that it’s shorts weather here in Southern California.
@Ignorant
Purest Empath, you are.
@Ignorant Finest Kind
I hate shoes
32 degrees last night.
42 degrees today.
Supposed to be 32 tonight.
Brrr…
@RiotDemon that pretty much mirrors our forecast
We’re having a heat wave. It’s warmed up to 15. It was -13 this morning to drive to work in. Almost 30 degree raise in temps! Oh it’s supposed to hit a balmy 20 tomorrow break out the shorts and meh shirts!
@sohmageek
Oohrah, I’m not in quite as cold a clime as you, but it sure ain’t warm here.
My windshield washers had been frozen for a week or more, until we had a heat wave of teens today.
My diesel truck won’t start because the fuel turned to wax in the fuel line and filter, but hopefully the block heater we bought will warm it up enough to thaw it.
We need it to start because the blowing snow and constant lake effect are quickly making our driveway impassable.
@sohmageek
@sohmageek
We get sunshine and mid-40’s for Wednesday.
And very busy plumbers.
NWS just issued a warning about black ice, as far south as Gainesville.
@OldCatLady uh oh. Floridians can’t drive when it rains, forget it if there’s ice.
@RiotDemon
I’ve been in FL when it rains every afternoon for hours? People drive in rain.
Otoh, if the temp goes below 65F, stay in bed.
@f00l sure, people drive in it… But that doesn’t mean they can drive.
Going on the highway during rain is terrifying because people either wanna drive 20mph or 100mph.
@f00l Not in SOUTH FL- Dade and Monroe Co’s, they all drive on Baldini’s there, so if it’s more than a drizzle all bets are off. Central Fl is all northern xplants, so it’s the 20-100 syndrome. [Serious stereotyping in service of humor here]
@PhysAssist having extensive experience driving in both SFL and CFL I can corroborate that the stereotypes are well deserved. I can’t speak to the Baldini’s though.
@f00l Yep. And when I lived there briefly many moons ago… after that rain, those of a certain age when mushroom foraging.
@jbartus
I speak only from my personal observations from many yeaes of driving to and into CFL and SFL. Specifically, during driving rains in Dade and Monroe Co (primarily in the middle keys), I often noticed cars with plates from these counties spinning their tires, much like cars here in upstate NY do in the snow. It really puzzled me so I started looking closely at the cars, and their tires, noticing that there were a much higher # of those Italian snow tires on cars w/ those plates.
That is to say the tires were significantly lacking in tread, like slicks used in drag racing, but also that it was because of wear, causing bald tires. Hence Bald-inis, the Italian snow tire.
@PhysAssist I figured out what you were getting at when you called them Baldinis, I just didn’t have firsthand experience on the matter to agree or disagree. I’m not sure Broward and Brevard counties are much better.
I do have to ask though… why Italian?
It was a balmy 20 degrees today! Stupid people forgot how to drive over the holidays! (Passed wayyyy too many accidents on the way to work today!)
9 degrees (actual)! Not even with windchill. That’s crazy for where I live in MD. My house wont even stay warm.
I blame the GoaT!
@mfladd TB12?
@sligett Will this keep me warm, or do I have to burn the book to do it?
@mfladd A victim of my own tersetosterone, am I. I had to google what I had written to understand what you wrote. TB12 is the GOAT; the sleepwear should keep you warm; and 4 out of 5 say don’t burn the book.
/giphy tb12
@sligett That goat thing passed right over my head for some strange reason. I blame the GoaT again, and not TB12. I understood the TB12, but not why you wrote it. A quick google myself found the book for nutrition and performance so I was still a little confused. Not until I saw this did I find TB12 clothing. I didn’t know he had a line, and haven’t seen any of it yet. Ha! Funny chain of events…
@mfladd My head hurts.
But to get back on topic, yesterday was the 5th day in a week with temps below -20°F. I hope today breaks the pattern.
@sligett Brrrrr…
@sligett @mfladd you’re both making my head hurt. If I understood correctly @mfladd said he was blaming Tom Brady (‘the GoaT’) for the cold, @sligett asked if he was referring to Tom Brady (TB12) when he said ‘GoaT’, @mfladd took that as a suggestion that TB12 might keep him warm and thought, I think, @sligett was suggesting Tom Brady’s book (The TB12 Method) might help to keep warm then asked if he was meant to burn the book, and after that things seem to have completely fallen off the rails with @sligett apparently finding the TB12 clothing line and thinking @mfladd was talking about that, then @mfladd got caught up in the clothing and retconned the clothing in to explain the original reply by @sligett… have I missed anything?
@jbartus yup, I was blaming our meh goat, but not by name. Then sligett suggested TB12. I missed that he was suggesting I was blaming brady, so I googled TB12 and found the performance book. He then talked about the clothing, which I had not come across. That ought to do it. My head hurts.
@jbartus Not that it was worth the effort, but I think you provided an excellent elucidation of our conversation.
@mfladd you did say “GoaT” so I can understand @sligett’s confusion as I too was wondering what blame Brady had.
@sligett I live but to serve.
Oops!
@f00l That’s … a lot of ice for one tree.
@f00l As much as I hate (fear) ice, I have to admit it looks so cool!
@callow
I suspect that was simply a sprinkler system that forgot to take a day off.
The street and grass elsewhere (including 2 feet to the side) were clear.
JIA airport just announced SW and American have cancelled all flights, in and out, through noon tomorrow. Lots of school closures. Many GA county and town offices are closed tomorrow. NAS Jax and NS Mayport just announced personnel don’t have to report until 10 AM. Shelters open; they’re getting good at this.
Today in MN, for the first time since Friday, it went above 0F! -5 to -15F (with -20 to -45 windchill) was the norm there for a bit. Not fun but man, this +12F we’ve got today feels like t shirt weather!!
@qwerty82 I felt the same way with our +15 here today.
@qwerty82 That’s cold! You meh just be a winner! But more than likely, not.
It’s 7 degrees. My teenage son put on shorts. Dumbass. I usually let him suffer the consequences of his wardrobe decisions but I was afraid school would call the police. He is wearing long pants now.
@sammydog01
sign him up for the polar bear plunge
@sammydog01 I have to argue with my son to put on a coat in 9 degree weather! “But mom, I am only outside for 2 minutes 4 times a day!” School wouldn’t call the police (only because they have my # on speeddial), but my ears would be blistered for a week!!!
@mikibell We live in the south so he has to walk outside to different buildings for classes. He won’t wear a coat but at least I convinced him to wear a jacket. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even have a coat that fits. Don’t tell the police.
@sammydog01 your secret is safe with me and the thousands of other people on the fora…
@mikibell
/giphy snickering
@sammydog01 up north in the deep freeze I saw one idiot only wearing a t-shirt and another one in shorts and flip flops (with about 8" or so of snow at the time).I presume both were headed to a car. If not they were certifiable.
Cold here in Bama.
I’m worried about the ducks. Yesterday they were all huddled in the ten feet of unfrozen water in the middle of the pond. I hope they didn’t get their feet frozen in the ice overnight. They rescued a swan yesterday on a nearby pond- had to chip it out. Ducks are stupid. Swans too.
It was a balmy 1 degree this morning for my walk into work. Gotta love the midwest! TMBG New York City
High of 75 low of 52 for today. Burr.
@connorbush No star for you. My fingers are too cold.
@connorbush 6pm last night in Cucamonga and it was still 65 degrees! Grrr!
@connorbush 5pm, about to leave work, and it’s still 72 degrees outside here …
@narfcake 65 but I’m more high desert/valley ish
Yesterday, weather report kept repeating that it was colder in Atlanta than in Alaska. This morning, I heard that it was already snowing in Jacksonville.
My local weather says snow for the next two days. Heard 8-10 inches. Glad I don’t have to drive to work.
Yes! Finally!
It’s 57° and raining. I am that asshole walking around in shorts and a t-shirt. It takes two minutes to walk from my car to the building and the building is warm. Went to lunch, and guess what, that building is warm too. They’ve actually got the real fireplace blazing.
I’ve been using my fake fireplace at night. Luckily, since it has a separate heater, I can put the thermostat on so it turns on and off automatically. It’s not cold enough for full blast yet.
Last weekend, 8° with blowing snow (just a trace, fortunately.) Did see a guy at the grocery store in shorts and flip-flops, though. Still a little bit of snow in the shady parts of the lawn.
This weekend, 65° and sunny. If you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute…
@2many2no last night when temp was 23 degree saw an idiot stand up paddleboarding after dark no lifejacket wearing black.
@CaptAmehrican That’s beyond foolish, more like a death wish.
I saw on the news that it is now officially colder than a brass witch’s ass in the shade.
CNN Sez: At last check several days ago, the high temperature on Mars was minus 2 degrees Fahrenheit.
Brrrr.
@sligett Warmer than lots of places here. I am moving to mars (as soon as I can afford a rocket ship that is. Already own clothes for the weather having lived where it was 40 to 60 below on a regular basis and 30 below during the day was not uncommon. Had to use outhouses in that too).
@Kidsandliz You win - If the movie representation was correct, there aren’t any outhouses on Mars!
Bad news - no Meh deliveries to you, on Mars.
@sligett I win? I win? What do I win? Oh wait - can’t get the few fuko’s I win on Mars? Guess I can’t move there then.
@Kidsandliz It would be just you and Matt Damon, though.
@sligett Now I really really don’t want to go to mars LOL
It snowed in Florida, but not far south enough that I can see it.
Far out! Camping should be great down there until the end of April!!!
It’s so cold here the cat has been using the litter box!
@cranky1950 My dog went outside, looked at the yard, peed on the patio, then came back in. Took about 30 seconds.
At least it freezes before it spreads.
@2many2no When mine got old she would do that, she figured no wanted to swat her any more. She was arthritic and would hold up a paw and wimper (except it was usually the wrong paw). then laugh at us when we let her off.
6-10" of snow expected overnight and tomorrow. Schools have been closed w/o a flake yet seen. Where I live the world will shut down for 3-4 days. Idiots with SUV’s littering the drainage ditches. Grocery stores raided. Angry lines at RedBox. Oh, the humanity!
@mfladd
Things used to be handled somewhat differently. Before the days of instant gratification.
@mfladd Headline from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle:
Hey, Florida: Your ‘bomb cyclone’ is just another Wednesday in Rochester
http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2018/01/03/rochester-weather-florida-winter-storm-bomb-cyclone/999395001/
@f00l Why does your book belong to ‘Waco Public Library’?
/giphy overdue fine
Wow, that wasn’t quite what I wanted, but the edit window has closed.
@mfladd We’re getting by-passed this time cold as all get out but no ice or snow.
Ok East coasters. Please take care of yourselves and pets and pipes and things.
Pls take some pix too.
Cold, currently about half inch snow, wind picking up about 15 knots, plow just went by. So far just started.
My car had a new dashboard alert this morning. A snowflake on a road.
Never seen that before. Apparently it’s warning me of possibly icy road conditions.
Only ice I saw was on my windshield. The spatula wasn’t a great scraper, but my brain wasn’t working that great at 4 something this morning.
@RiotDemon I get that at 37deg or lower.
NOTHING is plowed. Fucking disaster.
What a clusterfuck.
@mfladd just a dusting here… no plowing done yet!
@mikibell WTF! The world has stopped here. I am suppose to 5 hours roundtrip tomorrow. Me not sure.
It wasn’t over yet.
@mfladd it is so bright white outside, it is blinding… I was able to go to work yesterday…how about you?
@f00l had asked whether citrus farmers still used ice to protect crops from freezing weather. Yes, they do; local evening news was full of pictures. Strawberry farmers farther south are using it, too, as well as row covering. Another bad night due.
@OldCatLady If it stays below freezing for 2 days in a row it don’t matter what they use.
I remember it usta be a sea of orange trees from Clewiston to Leesburg, until 1977.
@cranky1950
Sometimes I think they use heaters in the orchards.
@f00l They’ve got smudge pots and big wind generators which are aircraft props mtd on a mast. It doesn’t do much when the temps get really low for an extended period because those things only work if the fruit/tree does not freeze solid.
Second day of no school tomorrow. I need them to go to school.
@sammydog01 Nah Nah, no TV and bon bons for you
@cranky1950 I’ll have to watch more TV and eat more bon bons next week to make up for it.
Almost got this much snow today. Drifts are probably higher.
Apparently it’s raining iguanas in South Florida.
@OldCatLady
You had a hurricane. And no roof. And the pneumonia. And now lots and lots of ice.
How’s the pneumonia?
@OldCatLady ah, yep. We experienced this before when I lived farther south. We lived on a canal and had a little wooden boat dock. Many times, we would find iguanas sunning themselves on the dock.
Luckily, we didn’t find any dead ones during cold snaps. It was weird to see them like that though.
@f00l Pneumonia gone, thanks. New roof. Still waiting for finish work on walls and floor. Currently my patio plants are wearing pillowcases until it stops freezing, and with their pointy tops they look like -uh-.
@OldCatLady
you got power?
@f00l Yup. Newer housing here has all power lines underground, and the intersection with older lines does sometimes cause transformers to explode, but not lately. How is it there?
@OldCatLady
Warmed up to tolerable here.
I’m still all traumatized tho.
@f00l ‘Tolerable’ is on a sliding scale this winter!
After 2 days of what felt like stangely balmy comfortable weather, in the teens to low 20’s, we dropped back to 0 and below overnight, which made a few people instant idiots all over again.
My car is now white and dirty white streaked. Back in the deep south (where it is below freezing but they don’t have salt here but fortunately no snow at the moment). One person asked me what the heck I had done to my car to have it covered in white and dirty white stuff. Umm ever heard of snow and salt? Tomorrow I can wash it as it will be in the 40’s. Actually I think it was above freezing today but I was too tired to deal with it.
This winter scene looks dreadful. I hope nobody has an emergency:
I see that @mediocrebot picked an interesting photo for the header:
