@Cerridwyn@jelliott04@Thumperchick But… But… If they were put in a topics lock box or deleted, we would never get to see the “Bad Lisa” thread again. I really enjoy it when it pops up from time to time. It reminds me how much I like the Good Lisa, @lisaviolet.
@jelliott04 - It drives me berserk that I can’t respond. Stopping a flame war is judicious, just don’t leave it hanging out there agitating people. I agree it really needs to go. And @shahnm needs to learn from it.
@jelliott04@kdemo I enjoy being proselytized to as much as the next guy, and the sanctimony is as welcome as always in an anonymous forum like this, so thanks for that. As has been said to me on this very forum when I commented on a thread I did not personally appreciate - don’t click and look if you don’t want to be troubled by it (and if you are troubled by it, just walk away and find a different topic).
If you have difficulty deciphering the difference between casual humor and bitter satire, the internet may be too complicated a place for you - even a happy place like this.
But, nonethelessless, it was an ill-judged thing to post. Even if your intention was only to post an example of the “sick jokes that sometimes follow shocking events” variety.
Perhaps you merely intended tension relief. I don’t know. I certainly don’t think you intended harm.
But … it did not, and should not, have gone well. And this result has to do neither with sanctimony on the part of the readers, nor with the readers being too close to events and lacking emotional distance.
casual humor and bitter satire
I perceived neither.
I doubt that very many aspiring or successful or talented comedians, either mainstream or cutting edge (or for that matter, very many workers in areas where dark humor is frequent), would have reacted very much differently than the dominant community reaction here.
@f00l It wasn’t an example of anything. It was derision and disgust with the Broward cops. Nothing more.
I don’t have a problem with the topic being locked - it is clearly an emotionally brutal issue. Remember, though, no one addressed or should address the victims or the tragedy with any levity. Ever.
However, the execrable human beings who made conscious decisions to stand by and let evil prevail are absolutely worthy of every hateful, scornful bit of derision that can be thrown their way.
Sorry you didn’t see my post in that way (though clearly others here did understand), but that was the sum total of my intent.
I get the impression you either really didn’t understand, or are purposefully mischaracterizing my post to score a few pats on the back for cheap internet sanctimony. I’ve been following your posts on this forum for years and think you must be a genuinely decent human being, so I imagine it is the former.
Respond however you wish. I’ll stay out of this topic from here on out.
I did not understand your post on the way you you intended it. This is true.
I also think it’s too easy to see a joke like that in various alternative ways: likely, for many, as a sick joke following such an event, ostensibly directed at the leos in place on campus, but underneath that, as a “get over it” comment on the entire affair.
Humor and intended humor are always tricky and difficult when the subject is tragedy, always likely to cause more problems than they address successfully.
There are reasons that jokes about tragedy, no matter how well intentioned, are to be put forward with great caution in highly charged situations.
And possibly only spoken to people whom you know very well, and who are likely to understand your intent.
If you had stated your thoughts in a less-prone-to-alternative-interpretations manner, you well have gotten some very thoughtful conversation in response.
Your tastes and mine on that joke differ here. I am glad to hear your explanation. it does help me understand your POV.
@shahnm Under normal circumstances I agree with the if you don’t like it, don’t click on it rule for things on the internet. But in this case, I think a different reaction is necessary because the title of the thread “yeah, I went there” was very clever and very enticing. But, what was in the thread was not. It was almost a bait and switch, a clever title that leads to a post that was sophomoric and offensive. I assure you that I have no difficulty “deciphering the difference between casual humor and bitter satire.”
As @f00l stated so well, it was neither. It was in very poor taste and not clever at all. I’m sorry you felt like I was proselytizing. I didn’t mean to. I only meant to express my opinion to the mods of this forum that something that was posted need not be in a public forum. That’s all. I’m new here. Perhaps what I did was a breach of etiquette. For that, I apologize. But I do believe that topics that have been judged to be a violation of the community’s standards and have been locked should not reappear on the front page. If that happens, then why on earth are they locked in the first place? But again, I am new, perhaps I am wrong about how this forum should be run. But I can assure you @shahnm I have no difficulty “deciphering the difference between casual humor and bitter satire” when the item in question is done well.
Sorry to bring up an old argument. I didn’t realize this issue had been so thoroughly discussed already. I’m new. Hopefully the tendency for the 'net to self police will occur here and the offensive and not funny post will just disappear. I’m all for offensive and funny, but this one committed the worst sin imaginable, satire that wasn’t funny.
@jelliott04@RiotDemon speaks the truth… @Barney is the friendliest ball of purple-lovin’ I’ve seen on this here internet. & @Barney is right, we don’t really care too much about rehashing old topics around here (or even necro-posting). I don’t think I saw the thread you’re speaking of (and I’m not going to seek it out), but for the most part, truly vile shit around here disappears into the ether. Hope you stick around.
It’s usually some combination of page views and interaction. (Stars, comments, replies.)
@Thumperchick Is there a way to delete them? “Yeah, I went there.” needs to just go.
@jelliott04 Ignore it and it will drop off.
@jelliott04 @Thumperchick
but people who don’t know what it is will click it
tell the coders you need a lock box for topics no one needs to see to go
@Cerridwyn @jelliott04 @Thumperchick What the hell is this thread you’re talking about? You have made me want to look.
@therealjrn Don’t click on it or it may post on the front page again.
@therealjrn its the thread that had the joke about the shooting.

there’s a difference between bad topics and BAD!!! topics
I you, @Placid Penguin.
@Cerridwyn @jelliott04 Granted, there is a difference. So, you would deny us the opportunity to see this topic again?

I loved @sammydog01’s “Happy Monday” comment to JonT.
@Barney @Cerridwyn @jelliott04 @sammydog01
Was just about to comment about Sammydog’s comment.

They say there is no accounting for taste …
Ah well.

@jelliott04 There was nothing wrong with you bringing up this topic. And you are right, that one topic was very offensive.
Welcome to our forum. I hope you will stick around and give us more of your comments. We really are a very friendly place.
@Barney You seem friendly. I shall stick around a bit!
