Who's finished Stranger Things on Netflix?
3I “show traded” with a girl in my office… She agreed to watch the first season of Preacher, but I had to commit to the first season of Stranger Things.
I gotta say… half way through the third episode and I’m feeling like I got the short end of this bargain.
I’m really struggling with the performance being phoned in by Winona Ryder. And David Harbour’s character is just excruciating to watch!
Please, someone, without any spoilers, PLEASE tell me Winona’s acting improves, and David Harbour’s character evolves… or at least gets “eliminated” by the… whatever it is that’s terrorizing the village?

I liked it.
@lisaviolet Please see my edit above. (Premature posting; they say there’s a cure for that?)
I liked it. I think Winona Ryder’s performance gets better as it goes on.
Preacher I have enjoyed much more. They are two totally different shows, but if I had to choose, I would choose Preacher.
@conandlibrarian Agreed. Very different shows. Last time I show traded with her we swapped Breaking Bad and the first season of Fargo (from FX). I think that was a win-win. I’m struggling with Stranger Things though. I’ll stick with it. The story is compelling enough, it’s just the acting I’m not loving for now.
I’ve watched it twice now. Binged it alone and watched it again with my husband. He struggled through the first few episodes also, but liked it by the end. I’d suggest that you keep with it. There’s only eight episodes, so it’s not a huge commitment.
Just started it tonight–maybe halfway through the first episode. My fiancee has some friends who were raving about it. So far I’m not that impressed but good to know I should keep my expectations low.
ETA with the mention of Breaking Bad above, I remember not being impressed with it at first either. By the end it wound up being one of the best things I’ve ever watched.
@djslack +1 on Breaking. I quit half way through the second episode. I went into the office the next day and tried to bargain for a reprieve. She stonewalled me and told me (jokingly of course) if I didn’t respect her “stories” I couldn’t possibly respect her and maybe she’d be a better fit in a different company where her viewing choices would be accepted.
Appropriately berated, I upheld my end of the bargain. Like you, I was grateful I did. One of the best series I’ve seen.
So far, Better Call Saul is holding it’s own as well. Although my mild crush on Kim Wexler surely has not swayed my opinion in the least.
I too wasn’t grabbed by the first few episodes but it eventually hits its stride and is worth watching.
I think the consensus is that it starts out more slowly than people liked but I thought it picked up by episode 4 and 5. I just binged it with my boyfriend this weekend and that’s what we agreed.
I agree that it gets better as it goes along, but I enjoyed those initial episodes, too. Eventually, it becomes this wonderful blend of Beyond the Black Rainbow, Goonies, and a Jon Carpenter soundtrack.
@reddinghill the soundtrack was a definite plus for me
I agree that the character development was slow, but it ends up pretty nicely with some satisfying characters.
The monster hunt/fight near the end is kind of fun too.
It was enjoyable, but I left the season feeling like there was little plot for all that time & not enough was explained. Similar to what a lot of people felt about lost (thought its nowhere near as big an offender).
It does get better once it hits its stride.
Stranger than what?
@DrWorm Stranger than other things?
I found her character annoying, but idk what else I’d expect from a grieving mom.
@darksaber99999 It wasn’t the character I found annoying as much as the… just sort of uninspired performance. It’s freakin’ Winona Ryder for cripes sake. I’ve seen her do so much better.
Now David Harbour on the other hand… his character is just downright annoying. LOL!
instant classic for me. i’ll watch this over and again. Preacher doesnt even compare.
@escfrizby Sacrilege!
