Who scored an iPhone X Pre-order for November 3rd?
2Want an iPhone X and you didn’t pre-order immediately at 3:01am this morning (Or at 3:10am, when the Apple Store finally reopened… harrumph.)? You’ll have to wait 5-6 weeks.
Fortunately, since I am a man with a particular set of skills and obsessions, I will be picking up my iPhone X next Friday, meaning I can finally test it with one of those Quirky Ohm Chargers I have.
Was anyone else able to grab one for launch?

iPhone … or a 10-week supply of catshirts?
@narfcake No problem, I’ll take the catshirts.
Sometimes some company that wants my money gets me to thinking that a special sale or a big release is an event and I’ll really really wanna participate.
Mostly I try to avoid?
Not saying the iPhone X isn’t a worthy device. But I don’t want infrared cameras and facial recognition unlock at this time. And I don’t want to be $1K poorer at this time.
I will keep my Samsung Galaxy 8+ any day of the week.
@mfladd And I will keep my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 any day of the week.
@heartny LOVE IT
@heartny Not that it matters anymore, but the Palm Pre had wireless charging 8 years ago and a far more elegant UI than either Android or Apple had back then.
@heartny also not that it matters but the android user asked what was new on the iPhone and the iPhone user told them. They never claimed Apple was the first.
@mfladd
Done with Samsung because you only get one major OS upgrade. I got really tired of that.
Nice hardware devices tho. Beautiful screens on those.
@heartny
I use both Android and iOS devices every day. None are current gen, all are recent.
I like the idea of Android (user control) better. I don’t care about wireless charging or face detectability or that stuff. I just like normal access to the file system, etc.
But in my daily use, the ios devices turn out to be more minute-by-minute usable. I use them for most things. When I want a mobile device to behave like a computer (ssh, server access, filesystem, stuff like that) I switch over to android.
iOS is said to be somewhat more secure, for what that is or is not worth.
I don’t use the more AI-type (Siri, OK Google) capacities of either much. Tend to have that turned off.
Perhaps I should watch “features” some videos.
As for the “who got what advanced features first” competitions, since I rarely use those, and am mostly interested in getting stuff done quickly and easily, I suppose whatever i am used to using or whatever seems fastest and easiest to use tends to “win”.
@f00l Apple controls the OS and hardware, making them more viable when it comes to upgrades. The plus side is that used products remain valuable.
Well as long as users don’t fall for the tricks, that is:

Except for Google’s own phones, I wouldn’t expect any OS upgrades for any Android phone at all.
@narfcake
For Samsung devices, I always got one major version upgrade. Even tho the device was perfectly capable of running several more. So I stopped buying Samsung devices.
Once LG became the only manufacturer with removable batteries, I decided that, (for Android), the length of the OS upgrade path was the other factor I cared about besides device reliability.
So mostly pixels for me, I guess.
I’m prob going to get a 1st gen pixel phone in the next few months. Just want the right price. Swappa or eBay I suppose.
The new release prices are just plain gouging, when you consider what new high end tablets with much larger screens sell for.
@f00l Reliability … so no for LG also.

I’m currently playing with a Moto E4. Operation wise, so far it’s fine, especially for its price. It’s a Moto, though. Upgrades? Not expected at all.
@narfcake
Yeah. I read that. Pixels it is.
I want the OS upgrades.
@f00l
I may be able to get you a Pixel reasonably priced.
If you’re interested, shoot an email to mflassy666 at gmail dot com.
@mflassy 666 - how appropriate…
@mfladd
That was not my first choice.
Google suggested it.
@mflassy We ALL know Alphabet, Inc. is the REAL 666!
@therealjrn
I’d rather not get into your feelings about Alphabet.
@mflassy Just sayin’
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@mflassy So it was Alphabet, Inc’s idea?
@f00l Customize your Android.
I agree never buying LG again.
2 Nexus 5x went into boot loop after an update.
Updated then the phone stopped working within a day. Told my other Nexus 5x not to update. Took the update 3 days later on day 4 the phone died.
Even having some doubts on the Nexus line. I don’t want to be a beta tester anymore.
LG did not honor warranty less than a year old.
@mflassy
Will email. Thx.
I would like the larger format of the X, but not at the effect of the smaller format of my bank account or larger format of my credit card balance.
Other than the screen size, Live Photo is a feature I’d use. I’d play with facial recognition, but after the 80% fingerprint recognition fail rate on my 6 Plus, I don’t have much hope that it will be reliable. And of course wireless charging appeals to me.
But none of this is worth a thousand bucks. Not today, not tomorrow, probably never, ever.
@ruouttaurmind I’m sure come November there will be thousands of banner ads and spam mails telling me how I can get a free iPhone X just by clicking here.
@djslack Go ahead and click, then I’ll buy it from you for $500. ⭐️
@ruouttaurmind Fingerprint is better than the 6 (but not a great phone location) on the 8 and 8+, but the iris detection is fantastic. It doesn’t seem from the rollout that apple’s face recognition will be any better than Samsung’s.
@mfladd Terribly disappointed in the reliability on the 6. The two primary reasons I got it were screen size and the supposed ability to unlock with a swipe. That worked perfectly… about 1 in 5 times I’d try it. Turned out it was just faster easier to go back to 4 digit code.
Nah. I’m sticking with android. Waiting until November 2nd for HTC’s new phone announcement. Depending on what that is, I’ll probably go for that or the Pixel 2 for my next phone.
I’m in the 2-3 weeks crowd, I think because I was signing up for the upgrade program.
You just have to over train the fingerprint reader to get more accuracy. I have 99% accuracy with iPhone 6. Just go to the screen that shows the fingers you have registered and put your finger on the reader. The entry for that finger will flash to let you know it registered. Then just do that 10 or 15 more times moving your finger around a little so it can build a better map, and you should get better accuracy. I only really have trouble when my fingers are wet.
@miko1 I’ve been through this a bunch of times. The problem I seem to have is perpetually dry skin and very calloused fingertips. Often even just interacting with a touch screen presents challenges.
Count me in for Scheduled delivery on Nov 3.
The Apple Store didn’t come back up for me until about 12:04 or 12:05AM, and all day-one-stock was already gone. I, like @dave, am in the 2-3 week crowd. Except that the actual delivery date is showing more like 4-5 weeks. Womp womp.
I think I can get another year out of my 6s, and I kinda see the X as an opportunistic price gouging device without much to recommend it over the iPhone 8.
Maybe I should be feeling good that the company that makes my most heavily relied upon devices hasn’t given me (much of) a reason to purchase the thing at the new price ceiling… I’m pretty cynical though, after the laptop redesign.
I’m waiting for actual user reviews to decide if I want to upgrade. I’m on the upgrade program so it makes sense to, but I’m a bit torn. I actually love the fingerprint reader on my 7+, it works amazingly well. However I don’t like the idea of using the facial recognition as I often pick up my phone while not looking at it or reach for it on the nightstand with expectation it will be unlocked by the time I open my eyes.
@cinoclav If you’re on the upgrade program, you at least move to the 8, right?
@dave I can if I choose to. Either way I’ll have that monthly payment. It obviously makes sense to move to the newest tech. If it turns out I don’t want to move to the X, I’ll move up to the 8+.
