They found that opium was able to stop people from drinking, but then it turned out they were all addicted to opium now and that was kind of worse. So they invented morphine, and it stopped the opium abuse, but then everyone was addicted to morphine, and that was still bad. So they went back to the drawing board and came up with heroin. That was very effective at stopping morphine abuse, but then they became heroin addicts and that was even worse. So the cycle just kept repeating in worse ways.
