The 1988 retelling of the classic has everything you could want from the story with one amazing bonus, David Johansen. You can’t tell me that having the singer for The New York Dolls as the Ghost of Christmas Past wasn’t the perfect choice. Plus Bill Murray is always great for a laugh…on screen. We won’t talk about off-screen behavior.
@ExtraMedium We just watched it last night! My husband had never seen it and was nearly crying with laughter during the scenes with the Ghost of Christmas Present. Such a good movie
@yakkoTDI Just saw that one (with Henry Winkler) last night and I have to disagree. It had a few moments but was overall too disjointed and his ‘conversion’ was too sudden. Not a great script.
The Finney one at least had a few memorable songs, though its far from the best.
@capnjb
Never seen it, looks pretty funny. I’m not a high will Ferrell fan, only certain movies but I do like Ryan Reynolds. Is there lots of singing in it because I’m not a singing movie person?
@capnjb I just finished watching it and it was so great! Very entertaining!
I wasn’t sure I’d like it it because I thought it’d be tough to live up to Elf, but it definitely did! Thanks for the recommendation!
Maybe it’s been too long since I’ve seen the Muppets’ take. And I am interested in giving it another shot, but my lack of a clear memory of its greatness does not bode well.
I would like to add a major kudo for “The Man who Invented Christmas” from 2017. Although I dislike the title, the fantasizing of how Dickens was inspired to write “A Christmas Carol” was just a lot of fun.
When Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker come to the door collecting for charity and Scrooge blows them off, Beaker gives Michael Caine the finger. This is absolutely what makes this the best version of A Christmas Carol. It’s not even close.
The funny thing is I’m over 40 and I still get excited to see Muppets holiday stuff every year.
SCROOGED!

But The Muppets did do it best. Can’t deny that.

Not agreeing or disagreeing but I am going to put in a vote for An American Christmas Carol.
I actually like most of the versions I have seen with the exception of that musical monstrosity with Albert Finney.

Spirited was pretty f’ing fun.

@Star2236 It definitely teeters on being a musical. But it is so much fun. If you stumble upon it, it is certainly worth a go.

Scrooged is by far my favorite.
I like the 1951 version with Reginald Owen best but the Muppets are a close second.

@gogrrl I do love Michael Caine!
A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim. 1951. THE classic!
@Tadlem43 Oh wait that’s the one I meant. Got the actor wrong. The ghost of christmas future scared the crap out of me as a child.
No votes for Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol? That one tickles me.
@mehnyblooms It’s on Peacock, I’ll be watching it.
1970 Scrooge with Albert Finney and lots of music.
@donnamom3 Be gone with you HEATHEN!!! All that singing is the main thing that ruins this version.
/giphy be gone heathen
Ok giphy you are obviously full of mead today.
