@Club33NOS@sjk3 You clearly both belong to the Church of Alton Brown. I've personally known others like you, that like to say "Alton Brown says..." a lot. (So much so that I already knew that "unitasker" was one of his favorite terms.) I've seen the guy on TV a few times, and I don't get all the worship. Just another celebrity chef...though not as annoying as many of them.
@ChunkyBitz He's a bit different from most, in that his show explains some of the science behind cooking. Most cooking shows will teach you a recipe, AB taught me how to cook and bake, not just the recipes.
I like multi-purpose gadgets, assuming they do their multiple tasks reasonably well. I have a smartphone, a watch, and a flashlight. I know, the smartphone will do all those things, but I can tell time at a glance and I don't have to fumble for the "app" to light something up.
There are way too many times that a unitasker is the best solution, depending on what you're doing. The just right tool that gets that suspension part on or off without fussing with a pipe wrench or other substitute. The unitasker can save time. The tool may be more expensive, but how much is the time it saves worth?
That said I like multitaskers in the kitchen because I don't have room for all the unitaskers I wish I could have. Still need to make room for a sous vide machine...
The Unix philosophy: do one thing and do it really well.
Well, that applies to software, anyway. Hardware is a different story. What do you call a computer, but a gadget that does everything?
@Fej The computer does one thing: run software.
I defer to Alton Brown in this situation. The only unitasker you should own is a Fire Extinguisher.
Not having frequent fires, I use my extinguishers mainly to open walnuts
@Club33NOS But a fire extinguisher can also be a murder weapon.
@Fish_Kungfu this is like an answer one of those Google interview questions: write down every use you can think of for a brick, blanket, and feather…"
@JonT I wonder if they would consider me at Google if I said "brick = murder weapon, blanket = murder weapon, feather = murder weapon."
@Club33NOS That was my first thought as well. high five
@matthew And OMG you make the tastiest banana nut bread!

@Club33NOS You can kill anybody with anything given enough time and willingness of the victim.
I love that the first two comments are complete opposites.
@JonT If you hold true that cooking and programming are the same thing. Hence the soft/hard-ware modifier.

You left out gadgets that do a bunch of things well. Kind of like the Veg-0-Matic or the leatherman.
@cranky1950 The only thing my Leatherman has ever done well is cut my fingers.
@cranky1950 What about the Sledge-O-Matic?
I own many items that don't do anything well, but I am a Luddite so get rid of all of it!
