When the old one will no longer run my apps, usually as a result of out of date OS. Now that I’m using an iPhone I anticipate a longer service life based on Apple’s history of legacy hardware support in OS releases.
@duodec I had a HTC EVO 3D for almost 4 years, and it never saw a single OS update. By the time I replaced it I wasn’t able to run anything other than email, texting and a browser (browser connections were rejected by many sites). None of my banking apps would run on such an old OS. None of my remote monitoring apps, network support tools… it was basically just a call, text, email device.
From there to the iPhone and I’ve had at least half a dozen updates in the 14 mos I’ve had it.
The latest iOs 11 still supports down through the iPhone 5s, a four year old phone that’s seen perhaps two dozen system updates. I suspect iOS 11 was the last, but that speaks to the subject of Apple’s legacy hardware support.
@ruouttaurmind I’m an iphone user, on my third one (3G, 4S, 6S). Thats after being an Apple user by choice from 1981 (Apple ][+, //GS, Mac…). The 3G was great, until IOS 4 came out. That caused massive performance issues across multiple apps, and though Apple acknowledged it, they refused to fix it or allow 3G users to fall back to IOS 3 and then maintain the security updates. A lot of us (from what I read online) would have been very happy with that but Apple was intransigent. I think a lot of 3G phones were jailbroken so they could be downgraded.
I have to wonder what a 5S user is going to experience moving from IOS10 to 11. My 6S has definitely been impacted; a lot of apps feel more leisurely and don’t react nearly as snappy as they did before. Its not bad (yet), but its definitly noticeable. So yeah, they let you install new IOS versions and updates on phones longer, but I don’t think they give a lot of concern to the phone user’s experience on phones more than a couple of generations old.
@duodec Ya, there are always trade offs. For me, I guess the option of being able to run my apps, even if a little sluggish, is preferable to replacing my phone every 18 mos or so.
My banking apps update frequently, the network admin and monitoring stuff at least once per quarter. Of course these updates are often tied to system functionality, so updating the app becomes requisite. New mobile OS support in the apps often means the developers discontinue legacy hardware support, or I wind up not being able to access new features in the apps.
So for me, a $400 iPhone I can use for 3 to 4 years is preferable to a $200 Android I can use for 18 mos or so.
@ruouttaurmind Thats one of the reasons I’m still on an iPhone. Another is that I used an android for a while and, other than an advantage in customizability it was pretty crappy compared to IOS. It was not a ‘pure’ android, it was clogged up with phone company and vendor crap but still…
I took a big hit in apps with IOS 11 too; 32 bit apps that I used frequently and were no longer being updated. I’m actually resurrecting my 4S to use with some specific apps (and to be an iPod too).
@f00l I’ve not seen much in the way of actual bugs except for the keyboard and input ‘area’ in messaging sometimes covering text windows, but some of the changes (like having to select to get back into keyboard after doing voice input) is seriously annoying. But I would sure appreciate getting back some of the performance.
When the one I currently have becomes so slow compared to other phones, that upgrading is a sizeable and noticeable jump in performance. It’s usually two or three generations after the previous phone.
I’ve been thinking up updating my iPhone 4s.
Whenever I look at prices I decide not to though, so I guess I am cheap.
Maybe I could afford it if I cancel VMP…
@communistjack while a good deal I just want to point out that while the 6 is larger, the SE is actually a more powerful phone (it’s a 6s in a 5s body, while the 6… is well… the iteration before the 6s)
I go with my family, because a) we can usually find a deal for buying 4 together, and b) if I waited until it died/was embarrassing to me, I would still have my old phone that didn’t even flip closed. This way, I can claim I’m helping family, and justify it to myself.
@mfladd I don’t think I’d trust Comcast with my mobile data, etc. Just had too many stupid issues with their home internet. It always starts good and then starts having issues after 6 months
I am curious about how the service is though, I would believe it being much cheaper than Verizon
@candreasen Honestly - they use verizon towers so no issue there. I seem to use much less data with xfinity than when I was with verizon. Many things like transcription of msgs is free (Verizon charges). My taxes and fees avg $2.67! My bill minus phone cost is usually $14 to $26 depending on data.
This is America - we replace our phones when the battery goes bad, just like we do with our cars. Replaceable batteries, an idea who’s time has passed (apparently…)
@BigWhoop If you go past the biggest players and/or down from the top of the line, you’ll find a good number of phones with a replaceable battery, a headphone jack, and a micro SD slot.
But there’s much less “sex-appeal” in the middle market.
@narfcake While I like the mid range phones they dont seem to get much for software updates. But I think if the Motorola G5s next iteration includes a replaceable battery and doesnt drop anything else I may go that route.
@narfcake since all the mainstream top tier phones are so popular and everyone with a pulse and a wellness to take out a second mortgage can get one there isn’t much appeal anyways. (brands like one plus and Huwaii on the other hand…)
@darkzrobe The cost difference can more than make up for purchasing a new model sooner rather than later. It’s not like Android is completely abandoned after one version, so the old OS will still chug along for the interim.
@davechait Credit has made it easy, but since the days of blurring the cost of service and the phones via contracts are practically over, folks have become more cognizant of what they’re really paying for their phone now.
@narfcake true but you still see ppl with the latest iPhone/ Samsung who look like they didn’t pay their rent yet. all thought the pay structure is different priorities have not changed much for some.
@narfcake While I usually dont see the old OSes completely dying I have a major problem that the underlying kernel does not get security updates. One of the reasons I really dont like Android. At least iPhones and my evil Windows Phone get security patches on a regular basis.
I was going every three years. Now, I don’t know. Probably still every three years. Might keep this iPhone 6s for four years, but I bet all the batteries and processors and cameras will tempt me into stupidly buying a new one next Octoberish time.
Maybe there will be a new SE then. Which will still have a headphone jack. That’d be nice.
When a newer model is less than one catshirt cheap. The 635 was no improvement to the 520/521, however.
When a newer model that’s actually improved is 2 catshirts cheap. The 640 has worked quite well.
When a newer model with a camera that can match the high-end is 5 catshirts cheap. Very good camera quality on the 640 XL.
When the said manufacturer finally throws in the towel and admits it’s over. At about 3 catshirts, the Moto E4 has been working well enough for my needs. The camera is a step down from even the 640, let alone the 640 XL, though.
Samsung is coming out with a new phone called Samsung X LOL This smartphone will be foldable, giving fans the chance to use a much bigger screen in a device that can still fit in a pocket!! Hell yeah!
When one of the TV shopping channels offers one for less than $100 that includes a year of service. It is usually a name brand phone (last two were LG and Samsung). Of course, I usually only use the phone as a phone with an occasional (free) game.
When the tech-ie hubby gets a new one (at least 2x a year) and can convince me i’ll like his old one better than my current phone (maybe once a year, but I managed/was stubborn enough to keep the Moto Razr for 2 yrs), then we sell back whichever I don’t keep.
I used to replace it every two years, when the contact allowed it for “free.” Now it’s when the old phone becomes unusable (my Nexus 6P had a cracked screen, and a screen-on battery life of ~20 minutes, finally upgraded to the LG V30).
My boyfriend? Whenever the newest iPhone comes out. Stays up to pre-order and everything. Sigh.
For my husband, it’s when his breaks. When we had AT&T, after the 24 month period was over, I’d check the cheap upgrade phones and if I liked any of them, I’d upgrade. I never upgraded to a smartphone with AT&T, didn’t want to pay for a data plan. Then they gave me a whopping 300mb when we changed our plan so I got a new phone that was basic but did a little bit of internet stuff.
We stayed there for a while, husband’s phone finally died, so I gave him my old one (same phone, only difference was the color). When that died and he absolutely needed to get a new phone, we switched to Cricket. I got my first smartphone (free, an Alcatel), with 2GB of data and after a year of frustration with pages not loading, finally got a new phone in October, an LG Harmony.
I don’t know why they do it, and I’m not complaining, but every four months, they give me another GB of data. Now, I’m up to 5GB a month. Not that I use much. I’m home most of the time (don’t like leaving the house, hard to deal with people, they suck the life out of me). So far, the most data I’ve used in any month is 712 MB. And that’s this month, the first month I had this phone.
I know I mentioned in a previous thread that I finally learned how to answer my old phone eleven months after I got it. I’m better with this one. And I do address that in my voicemail message. That I fainted because it rang (no one ever calls me, well, just the vet’s office) or I’m an idiot and can’t figure out how to answer it, so just leave a message.
Still using my Samsung flip phone. lol
Only my 2nd ever cell phone.
No idea how long I’ve had it.
No intention of replacing it until it no longer functions.
Drives other people nuts that I have absolutely no desire for a smart phone.
Drives me nuts that they’re all so addicted to their phones - I don’t need that shit.
by “it’s time” it means when my fury meets a financially irresponsible decision. at least this year i’m waiting for black friday deals. i hate all phones. they all fucking suck. why can’t they just work well for longer than a month. i’m about ready to buy an iphone, except theirs also suck this year.
@ELUNO yeah i mean, while i would prefer a headphone jack, realistically i haven’t used one in 2 years, back when i finally admitted that a second device just for playing music was redundant and i couldn’t stand to have a cable attached to my phone. in the case that my headphones battery dies, i’d be pretty pissed. but that hasn’t ever actually happened. brb need to plug my headphones in. /twitch
@f00l i would but i’d never be able to go to such a small screen. i’m an irrational power user with expectations in line with technical possibility (god dammit) but no where near reality.
i am not totally ready to move to apple. but i’m interested to see what the 2nd gen ‘X’ will look like next year. the size of the phone and lack of bezels look great, while any other iphone is hideous in that regard (same with the smaller pixel 2). honestly, i prob would have splurged on the X this year with the right trade up/rebate deal if it had a fingerprint scanner. but i won’t play apple (or google’s) “you’ll take what we give you and like it” compromises until it makes sense in practice (like how i can personally accept the loss of the headphone jack). and face scanning and screen notches and giant bezels and lack of wireless charging or waterproofing or massive bloat (speaking of multiple brands here) are not acceptable. and i believe the lack of a fingerprint scanner was a time issue, rather than a design decision, and that next year’s will have it.
@ELUNO agree, but my commute is on an extremely crowded train with too much shuffling to go back to cords. i’ve given in to the convenience of wireless and find a good pair of bluetooth to be satisfactory. i’m over my days of using amps to prop up fancy wired headphones to pretend i can tell the difference between an mp3 and a flac.
irrational power user with expectations in line with technical possibility (god dammit) but no where near reality.
I used to be more that way. Now they are utilitarian devices to me, tho nice ones.
The single biggest purchase factor beyond basic techie comperence and speedy usability is ability to upgrade the OS.
the size of the phone and lack of bezels look great, while any other iphone is hideous in that regard (same with the smaller pixel 2).
I could care less how it looks. Dies it perform? Does it augment my life or get in my way?
My note 4 and iPhone 6s+ have nice big screens. but smaller is OK too.
Don’t want fingerprint scanner or face scanner. fuck that. If I get a phone with it I’ll turn it off.
Did you know that stuff works after you are dead, provided you haven’t been dead long?
Facial scanner have been unlocked not only by identical twins, but also by children’s it parents in some instances.
There is at least once example where a mom’s iPhone C can be Dave unlocked by her 10 year old son.
No thanks.
Waterproofing good.
Lack of a headphone jack/port is bad but the world is going that way. I own nice wired headphones. Dunno what to do with them in the future.
won’t play apple (or google’s) “you’ll take what we give you and like it” compromises until it makes sense in practice
They all do that. You just have more manufacturers w Android so more choice. But if your criteria is OS upgrades over many years (me) then iPhone vs pixel vs what?
Not so many choices.
It all sucks.
And the premium phones are so overpriced I wanna gag.
What did Apple charge for an Ipad? Vs iPhone X cost?
Yeah. Most expensive component is the screen. Huh.
I’ll wait.
The smartphone market is not yet at a sanity level. People still overpay wildly for the latest.
@f00l my issue with software updates is planned obsolescence built into them. i dont trust them not to purposely slow my phone down.
re: bezels i didnt mean looks ridiculous literally, but i mean i cant stand a huge phone with a small screen. not in 2017. its crazy the pixel 2 and iphone 8+ exist this year with those bezels. the 8+ is a much larger phone with a smaller screen than my current G6. its a joke.
@f00l but if you play in the stock market you must pretend that it is possible to squeeze more and more profit out of something… because it’s not good enough making 2000% profit… the next quarter you need to make 2100% profit… then 2200%… because infinite profit increases are really possible… really… trust them.
Sustainable reasonable profit for decades? pffft who needs that.
And lack of the usual ports plus expensive decent headphones with proprietary chips equals more locked-into-your-hardware users and more x1
-chip beats sales.
I used to keep my phone with me while doing yard work. One day while mowing the lawn, I noticed a thoroughly chopped up cell phone in the grass near the street.
Later I discovered my phone was missing. Hmmm.
when the 2nd iteration of the model newer than my current one has been released.
@thismyusername what happens when the second iteration sucks
I was thinking something similar once, but for me that phone was the Note 7 and, well, they got a bit hot for my tastes
@uninflammable then you skip it! I will admit that I do this for iphones more than other ones.
this method usually results in at least $200 from the sale of the old iphone if timing is good.
@uninflammable I had the galaxy S3 and when the S5 came out I was like ooo I bet the S6 would be better.
Then they started removing replaceable batteries, SD Card slots, and now flipping headphone jacks.
I guess I am stuck with my windows phone
The local Verizon store starts CALLNG me about special deals
When I break a crucial part of the phone which to replace would cost more in time and/or money than the phone is worth.
I have, so far, had two phones.
When the old one will no longer run my apps, usually as a result of out of date OS. Now that I’m using an iPhone I anticipate a longer service life based on Apple’s history of legacy hardware support in OS releases.

@duodec runs pretty well on the 5s I played with… my 6s runs better on 11 than did it on 10.
to be fair I clean install every major version update.
@ruouttaurmind 5s has the A7 which is the first 64 bit cpu… all the ones that got dropped were the 32 bit cpus. It should make it to 12 at least.
@duodec Ya, there are always trade offs. For me, I guess the option of being able to run my apps, even if a little sluggish, is preferable to replacing my phone every 18 mos or so.

@duodec
My 6s is noticeably laggy and freezy on 11 compared to 10.
I’m a bit annoyed. Not used to an iOS upgrade released with so many bugs and performance issues.
Come on already, Apple.
We do notice this shit.
@duodec
This! Absolutely this. The way they’ve changed the notifications screen is also not to my liking.
@f00l For me on a 6 Plus the 11.1 update has made a modest improvement in lag.
When the one I currently have becomes so slow compared to other phones, that upgrading is a sizeable and noticeable jump in performance. It’s usually two or three generations after the previous phone.
and meh, if you would just update to 11.1.1 you would fix those missing i’s.
Every other September
I’ve been thinking up updating my iPhone 4s.

@zachdecker check out iphone SE (it’s a iphone 6s in a 5s body)… you will find them going for $200 or less with many carriers.
your 4s is a hack waiting to happen at this point.
@zachdecker walmart will have $99 iphone 6 on black friday that are locked to stright talk for 1 year
metro pcs has $29-$49 NEW iphone SE with port in and first month payment (locked to metropcs for 3 months)

When I switched over to Xfinity Mobile. The money I am saving (for now) over Verizon is paying for the phone easily, Couldn’t be happier - seriously.
@mfladd I don’t think I’d trust Comcast with my mobile data, etc. Just had too many stupid issues with their home internet. It always starts good and then starts having issues after 6 months

@meh I use my headphones all the time. Wired>>>Wireless
@meh
I used to be more that way. Now they are utilitarian devices to me, tho nice ones.
The single biggest purchase factor beyond basic techie comperence and speedy usability is ability to upgrade the OS.
@meh the new iphones do come with a free adapter to use headphones… also extra adapters are like $9.
still can’t listen while charging… but that’s why they bought beats and made the W1 chip now isn’t it
@thismyusername
And who wants to mess with a dongle. While likely at home because wired. But you can’t charge the damned phone thereby.
I want some really nice bt headphones that have both the x1 and the latest Qualcomm bt chip.
Actually I want ports. That’s only worked really well for how long now?
I hate this divergence.
Fuck 'em.
@f00l my issue with software updates is planned obsolescence built into them. i dont trust them not to purposely slow my phone down.
re: bezels i didnt mean looks ridiculous literally, but i mean i cant stand a huge phone with a small screen. not in 2017. its crazy the pixel 2 and iphone 8+ exist this year with those bezels. the 8+ is a much larger phone with a smaller screen than my current G6. its a joke.
@f00l yes. fuck em. fuck em all.
@f00l but if you play in the stock market you must pretend that it is possible to squeeze more and more profit out of something… because it’s not good enough making 2000% profit… the next quarter you need to make 2100% profit… then 2200%… because infinite profit increases are really possible… really… trust them.
Sustainable reasonable profit for decades? pffft who needs that.
ports cost money ya know.
@thismyusername
And lack of the usual ports plus expensive decent headphones with proprietary chips equals more locked-into-your-hardware users and more x1
-chip beats sales.
@f00l
“2300% here we come”
-apple probably
Still running my Note 3… maybe January?
I used to keep my phone with me while doing yard work. One day while mowing the lawn, I noticed a thoroughly chopped up cell phone in the grass near the street.
Later I discovered my phone was missing. Hmmm.
When the resale price of my current device starts to dip too quickly to justify my upgrade.
