@mfladd Until the kids are about 14 or 15yo, we as parents are doing A LOT of molding and shaping. There is Free Will, but it's pretty restricted early on.
As far as tools, my kids often "borrow" mine without permission, make a mess of things (including extremities), and then leave them out in the rain. I'm not giving 'em any tools 'til they can show they'll take care of them.
