Stare out the window and briefly internalize the absolute horror of being stuck in a metal box of death with other human beings. Then maybe listen to some music or something.
My fiancee reads books out loud while I drive. We’re halfway through The Martian right now and need to go on another trip to finish it. 2 hours driving coming up Sunday, so maybe we’ll get some in.
@djslack funny, my wife and I did that several times on road trips while we were engaged. It stopped after we got married- I think we got tired of listening to each other talk!
@timmyboy1 We read each other a book on the road trip portion of our honeymoon but that was the last time. But now that we have podcasts and audiobooks, we can listen to readers with much more talent.
Mad Libs until we’re so sick of them we use the same word for every entry.
We’ve also played a single-word story game, where we start with “Once upon a time” and everyone then takes turn contributing only one word at a time to create a story. Our last group of stories somehow all centered around a homicidal raccoon…
Judge John Hodgman and Spilled Milk. On the rare occasion we take a long trip, an audiobook. The last two were Nick Offerman’s second book and Amy Poehler’s autobiography.
I picked podcasts/audiobooks, as it was the closest thing, but on the road, even more often than podcasts and audiobooks, I like to listen to talk radio.
With all that we know about the negative effects of stress on your mental and physical health, why would anyone voluntarily go on a road trip with anyone?
I love conversation on trips because that is what I grew up doing. My wife and boys however like silence more. Obviously road trips are not much fun these days.
Why is sleep not an answer? I just sleep.
Sleep while the passengers scream to wake me up…
Arguing.
Definitely sleep. Unless I’m driving.
@jacatrow The ex used to insist that I remain awake to entertain her, then fell asleep as soon as I was driving.
I don’t have a car or a family. When I trip on the road, my cat ignores me.
Slugbug…when you see a vw beatle you punch the other person in the arm and yell SLUGBUG!!! She with the most punched wins!!!
@tinamarie1974 also, bruiser cruiser for PT Cruisers
Or eyespy, but my sister and I preferred the opportunity to punch each other on the arm without getting in trouble as kids
@simplersimon oh nice. Now I have a new one to add bahaha
@tinamarie1974 Along the same line, our family has a Honda Fit, so we play the Honda Hissy Fit game.
Another variation is the Skittle game, calling out cars painted the bright color of skittles.
I drive 2 hours, at least 4 days a week taking my son to/from swim practice.
So we have lots of time for car trip games.
@tinamarie1974 Or Stiletto Jeep!!! You may want to wear a stab-proof vest for these trips.
@tinamarie1974 Hah, I learned that one as “punchbuggy”
Start an argument and then sit in a malevolent silence for hours on end. Thank God I have a perfectly trained bladder.
I don’t go on road trips.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits album - once Running Down a Dream starts then I know I’ll be driving outside of Michigan.
Mad Libs

Lots of stand up comedy
@vanslaterco You must have a tall car.
@pitamuffin Ya, Ergotron makes them. Great for your back. Sitting for too longs bad for you.
@vanslaterco I prefer Workrite, esp for their monitor arms.

Watch my passenger’s DVD while I drive.
@GLaDOS while enjoying cake?

@timmyboy1 Our made up stories always seemed to contain anthropomorphic food as characters (Sammy Sausage, etc.).

Having made several car trips from Washington to Florida with the whole family, I know the pain.
I’m almost always driving, so Podcasts or Music for me.
Those rare times on trips when I’m not driving, Video Games.
I picked podcasts/audiobooks, as it was the closest thing, but on the road, even more often than podcasts and audiobooks, I like to listen to talk radio.
Road trip with my family? Argue.
I only go on road trips with passengers if they are bound and gagged in the trunk.
Sports, sports, sports. Can’t get enough of the useless banter and children’s games played by grownups.
/giphy go sports
He drives, I stay home.
With all that we know about the negative effects of stress on your mental and physical health, why would anyone voluntarily go on a road trip with anyone?
I never go on family road trips or vacations. I get to stay home and take care of the cat.
Geocaching.
There. I’ve said it.
Conversation?! What is this? 1940?!?
Because texting isn’t allowed in my state, I just facetime on long road trips.
