@DrunkCat Everybody says that, but I call cap. Having been on art websites since as far back as the 90s, no one is patting you on the back for making stick figures and in fact, if you set up your own AI and generate good enough images people will like that more than the person who uploaded their Sonic MLP hybrid OC that they doodled in math class.
But hey. I’ll use my time machine and go back to the mid 2000s and tell the children making Sonic OC sprite recolors that it’s better than AI. Maybe it will offset the fact that, negative or positive, AI images generate more attention than the works of a nascent artist.
@AaronLeeJohnson No one is patting you on the back for making magnus opus’s either. There’s even memes about it e.g. “my low effort post out did my high effort post”.
If AI images generated more attention then they wouldn’t be so desperate to still find a use case after all these years. Some dude got more attention commissioning Daisy elephants.
I don’t usually respond to vapid arguments based on the vapors but the idea that people can’t just pick up a pencil is insulting to the species.
@AaronLeeJohnson@DrunkCat
Find a use? lol, you haven’t noticed them being used by companies everywhere? At this point, you probably only notice the bad ones, which is probably why you have such a negative opinion.
@AaronLeeJohnson@DrunkCat@DVDBZN yes! Many small businesses use them, too. Small businesses can’t afford to hire someone to create custom images…now they can instantly create them and use them on their website and social media. Not to mention the back and forth and time needed to create them with an independent creator.
@shirlema No scent, but the company at one time made scent “rings” to rest around the flame. So yep, just a flame with a remote control, timer and safety features.
@shirlema
Yes: the scent of incomplete combustion of petroleum products.
"Burning paraffin candles indoors releases harmful chemicals like benzene and toluene, which may contribute to indoor air pollution and respiratory issues.
It’s advisable to use them only in well-ventilated areas and consider alternatives like beeswax or soy candles for a safer option."
@einrad I can see these as a safer alternative to yard party tiki torches. As someone who enjoys a bit of firelit outdoor time, these do appeal… and, unlike my Boomer neighbor, seem unlikely to set fire to my yard.
If these were scented, I’d probably throw in. Even so, I’m tempted.
It’s interesting that the cnet review cited the simplicity of the remote and absence of app control as a positive. I could see these being huge for people who decorate for spooky season if they could be programmed and tied into other automation.
@phr@zippyus I’m pretty sure “liquid paraffin” in a combustible context, aka “lamp oil”, is just what’s also known as “kerosene”. (Confusingly, there is a different thing called “liquid paraffin” that is used in cosmetics and is not combustible.) You’ll sometimes see references to the Soviets and others using “liquid paraffin” as fuel in things like rockets, and that’s what they mean.
@kensey@phr@zippyus Liquid paraffin candles are available in various forms, including liturgical candles and as a pediatric laxative. It’s not the same as kerosene because it’s far more refined, but I have little doubt that the phrase is used liberally.
@phr@zippyus “liquid paraffin” is sold by the gallon as “paraffin lamp oil” or “odorless lamp oil”, which, at least in the US, is much more refined than kerosene lamp oil.
@OnionSoup I read the cnet review, and now I want the first edition. You could set them up to trigger when your phone was in a certain distance. Imagine walking to your acolytes as flames leap up to light your way!
Liquid paraffin lamp oil is rather cheap and IF the cartridges can be refilled waala! That would make an even better deal!
The wick can probably be pulled out some too I would guess Lite it UP
@dahobbs9 Came here to ask about this. If there were a way to refill the cartridges with your own fuel, that would negate the loss of functionality once the ‘disposable’ cartridges run out.
@dahobbs9@PooltoyWolf Am definitely going to give this a try. With 10 refill cartridges per bundle, I will have plenty of spares for some trial and error.
@dahobbs9 I was thinking about refilling. Just from looking at the pretty pictures I guessed tiki torch/hurricane lamp fuel and a luer-lok syringe with a large bore needle. Drill a small-ish hole in the top between the wick and the rolled seal for needle access. Easy-Peazy.
@dahobbs9 Additional thoughts. Drilling a hole will likely create a spill hazard if it gets knocked over. I know the tilt safety should extinguish the flame but it could still leak absent devising some sort of plug. Also, filling with your own fuel gives you the opportunity to add a scent you find pleasing. Or offensive, hey you do you.
In business, if you have no competition you either have an absolutely world-shattering idea and you’re ahead of the market or it’s so dumb no one else thinks it’s worth creating. Given that this is on Meh…
@ergomeh I think a combination of being ahead of the market, but also being unrealistic on price. $99 per candle (with 2 refills) is pretty insane. This entire set we’re selling weighs over 15lb so it’s not cheap stuff and not cheap to ship either.
We can’t even make money on it at this price… so maybe you’re onto something with your second point there
@ergomeh I was a bit surprised these weren’t a Kickstarter project. They spent a good chunk of change at the outset getting reviews on several well-known sites (CNet, Forbes, and Popular Mechanics were a few on a quick search)
The ultimate goal for this probably was to get a bunch of people onboard were recurring subscriptions, but they missed the mark by making the initial cost so high. They really could have taken a lesson from the Gillette and HP business models of virtually giving away the advertised product to build a steady stream of income from refills. – Much as Meh is doing by making the set of refills cost more per unit than the main deal.
I probably went too far down the rabbit hole in seeing that Gen1 actually had more bells and whistles. Different color shells, scents, a phone app, etc. but the refills only lasted half as long. No complaints about ditching the unnecessary IOT, but these look a bit too plain, and the realistic appearance is instantly nullified if seen from above.
Curious as well about the possibility of refilling. And would the fuel be kerosene or mineral oil? Perhaps a small hole added near the top of the refill, fuel added by syringe, and then hole covered with tape?
@troy the Amazon AI summary for yesterday’s bowls mentioned them as gifts for ice cream lovers. These could have gift potential but not at $99. All the downsides of electronics (lost remote, need to charge, etc.) and still just burn wax - whoever thought there was a market? (I’m not a candle person although @OnionSoup 's idea of an automated crypt has an appeal…)
What I am wondering is how the remote ignition works, if it (the igniter, not the remote) uses a battery and can the battery be replaced or recharged.
Answered my own questions before anyone had a chance to ridicule me for not looking at all the pics. Looks like rechargeable and either plasma or spark ignition (the former will drive to dogs nuts). In for a set, these are too unique not to waste money on.
I just searched for the company to see how easy it would be to get refills, their home page begins with “Unfortunately, the challenging business environment in recent years has led us to the difficult decision to cease operations.” That explains the deep discount on Meh.
@Jonas4321@kensey at that price for refills, it cheaper much to get a bunch of these while supplies last… Why not order 10! You’ll have 120 refills for only $240!
@pmarin and we used to get knives and speaker docks of all kinds…don’t miss the speaker docks, but I did buy knives from Meh on occasion (some were crap but some were good).
On the theory that basically any refill cartridge of the right height should work with these, and because we have pretty frequent brief power outages in the summer where I live, I went ahead and pulled the trigger.
@LincolnMics I totally agree. Think we can drill a hole in the plastic just below the metal ring. I found 2MM silicone plugs on Amazon. Also a syringe that has a blunt stainless steel needle that will fit a 2mm hole. I see a win win. And I see wicks that *should * Work
@jonjen2 i have many sizes of syringes and use luer lock blunt edge tips for dispensing glues and various things, found on ebay and amazon. I was not ready for the size of these things
@jonjen2 one of mine is already acting up, self extinguishing and then the “extinguish” fan sound was going off all night… i’ll mess with it some today
@jonjen2 there may have been some “oil” or other substance that got onto the electrodes or that top surface, i noticed a little “shiny” so i wiped it all up and it so far has not done the extinguish thing so if yours does it try to wipe it all down really well… just guessing i dunno what its deal is
@LincolnMics Well you cant see more than a light blue flame with alcohol (cant be seen in daylight) kida defeats the whole purpose. And Yes even if you use 90% isopropyl alcohol you can barely see the flame. Hence the liquid paraffin or “Purified Kerosene” so you can actually see the flame.
@LincolnMics Just got mine. It was a Mothers day Gift for the Wifemate. She wont open it till next week. She said so… So I guess I wont get to play with them till then. Keep us updated with the issues and the fix actions needed. I did order some essential oils that will dilute in the “Liquid Paraffin” AKA purified Kerosene; So we shall see how to add (drill a small hole) to add the smell and the additional oil. We shall see.
These arrived today – I’m not seeing the charge light light up on either on when I plug it in (it’s supposed to light red during charging and green when fully-charged). It does seem to be charging (the extinguish fan goes on when I press the button next to the charge port, since it thinks it’s been tipped over with a cartridge present). I guess I’ll let the one I have plugged in currently charge a few hours and see if the green light lights up.
@kensey@LincolnMics Luckily mine all charge, and indicate red and green. I used a USB C to C cable on one and it charged it just fine? I also used the provided cord with the other.
Holy boxes, batman! There is so much cardboard in this bundle.
I like them; they are as advertised. Hopefully they will be refillable.
@kensey@KNmeh7@LincolnMics Totally refillable… I put what was needed on the forum. If anyone has an EXTRA Candle (not the refills; just the wax candle itself) and wants to sell it I would love to purchase it!
Or we can make some sort of deal with trade of the rubber plugs and 2 of the Syringes and some money to boot. I really wanted 2 working candles for the wifemate.
They arrived… But I am not allowed to touch them until wifemate opens them for Mothers Day. I want to so play with them. But Alas I will see them Next Sunday and see what they are all about. 2; I have the essential oil smells and the syringes to fill them. Please everyone keep the comments coming!
@jonjen2 i’m on hours 10+ burning through a couple of the fuel cells to expedite and allow an opportunity to get working on some refill solutions. I have essential oils for diffusors are these the same oil extracts you’re speaking of? A small rubber plug to fit a small hole to allow for passing and resealing of whatever fuel should be that simple.
I’ll poke around at the Ace Hardware for a rubber “stopper” and see what I find.
…i should have kept a log to see how many hours one of these actually produces. Next time.
One of mine seems to think it is getting tipped over, too hot, or being touched and randomly shuts itself off. Then, if you don’t unscrew the container to turn it off, it will run the fan at random times. Sigh.
My response: “meh; that tracks”
Had I spent $99 my response would be . . . well, I see why the company is no longer. It wasn’t a faulty subscription model, it was cheaping out on the components.
@KNmeh7 i have one with this same issue, play with the depth you screw in the fuel cell telescope it in more or less and listen for the 1 good beep. Make sure it’s really clean inside and out. These have been how I’ve gotten it to “behave” but it’s still not right. 3 of 4 are working flawlessly otherwise. I haven’t had time to investigate further why the random fans go off, it’s as if like you say it thinks it’s being tipped as if you tip it even when off the fans engage.
I finally had my wife open them. One works great! The other will not charge with the same charging cable I used for the first one. Will not turn on at all either.
If any of you all ordered 2 or 3 sets just for the refills I would be happy to purchase one of the Candles (no refills needed) I just wanted her to have to for on top of the mantle. I reached out to MEH, but they prolly dont have any left.
Please let me know if you would like to sell me one.

What a hot deal!!
A real flame, even if it’s poorly drawn stick figures, is galaxies above some douche canoe trying to make an “AI” flame.
@DrunkCat Is that the phone I hear ringing? Hurry up and answer!! It might be them calling you back because they miss their cuddly douche canoe.

I disagree. You must have missed the website for Stick Figure Death Theater.
Also!!
@AaronLeeJohnson No one is patting you on the back for making magnus opus’s either. There’s even memes about it e.g. “my low effort post out did my high effort post”.

@AaronLeeJohnson @DVDBZN @TimW Yes, there’s always been horrible and despicable people running businesses. That’s nothing new either.
Do these have a smell or scent or whatever? Or is the entire gimmick it’s a flame with a remote control?
@shirlema No scent, but the company at one time made scent “rings” to rest around the flame. So yep, just a flame with a remote control, timer and safety features.
@shirlema @troy Safety features?!?!
I’m out.
@shirlema
Yes: the scent of incomplete combustion of petroleum products.

Remote control arson? I really don’t think these are a good idea.
@netbucks They are a great idea.
@netbucks too impersonal?
@netbucks Wonder what the range of the remote is?
(Asking for a friend.)
@netbucks @phendrick
You do know that roasting a friend doesn’t involve real fire right? Right? RIGHT? RIGHT?!!
OMG!! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY FIRETRUCKS!!!
@netbucks that was my immediate thought and now I want 10. Although a glass bottle and a good throw is also remote control arson.
@Konraden @netbucks
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov_cocktail
I like real candles. I like fake electronic candles. This? I can’t begin to see the use case…
Maybe these will be the world’s first and the world’s last remote control real candles?
@einrad I can see these as a safer alternative to yard party tiki torches. As someone who enjoys a bit of firelit outdoor time, these do appeal… and, unlike my Boomer neighbor, seem unlikely to set fire to my yard.

“refill cartridges” lolwut? Is that butane at 100x markup or something?
@phr Where the heck are you getting butane that cheap?
@phr “liquid paraffin refill” so wax in a liquid state
@phr @zippyus

Real flame candles help create the perfect mood lighting for your date with your Real doll.
@Num1Zero My Miku is gonna be so excited!
@Num1Zero Hope it’s a non-flammable doll.
@Num1Zero @ShotgunX @phendrickphendrick
An interesting take on the phrase “going down in flames”.
Going to stock up on 100 of these for my cult.
They will all worship me as a God when I make the candles burn from afar.
@OnionSoup Now that’s using the old brain cells!!
@OnionSoup I read the cnet review, and now I want the first edition. You could set them up to trigger when your phone was in a certain distance. Imagine walking to your acolytes as flames leap up to light your way!
Also probably the Darth Vader theme is playing.
@brainmist yes that music and. Add something to the Paraffin to make the flames burn red…
Liquid paraffin lamp oil is rather cheap and IF the cartridges can be refilled waala! That would make an even better deal!
Lite it UP
The wick can probably be pulled out some too I would guess
SideDeal has 4 cartridges for $12
@dahobbs9 Came here to ask about this. If there were a way to refill the cartridges with your own fuel, that would negate the loss of functionality once the ‘disposable’ cartridges run out.
@dahobbs9 @PooltoyWolf Am definitely going to give this a try. With 10 refill cartridges per bundle, I will have plenty of spares for some trial and error.

My grandma would like this.
@AaronLeeJohnson Make your grandma happy!
The refills are 4 for 12$. So if you feel like extras just buy the candle bundle again at 10 for 24.
@shaungreen426 this guy candles
@shaungreen426 @troy I just repeated this exact thought in a now-deleted comment. Wish the refill-only bundle was a bit more cost-effective.
@shaungreen426 Yeah, the sidedeal math ain’t mathin’
WTF is reverse burn? Does it unflame and fill the fuel tank up instead of flaming and emptying the tank out?
@werehatrack I was wondering what the heck they meant by that, too!
@werehatrack @TimW I think it’s a sick rejoinder. Like the classic “Well you’re a bigger one!”
@ciabelle Most Excellent refill suggestion!!
I’m tempted, but I feel like this has great IRK potential.
If you want this make sure you buy a bunch since this business closed down so once you’re out of refills you won’t be able to get anymore.
Gnomes on fire?

/giphy debonair-lethargic-gnome
Imma find a safe way to refill these suckers. $30 more = forever.
https://a.co/d/b7nSdeQ
@Jonas4321 It looks like they use a cartridge of a type that is more-or-less standard (apart from different proportions of the cylinder) for some oil lamps and candles. See, e.g.: https://www.cokesbury.com/072094030003-Emitte-by-Emkay-Liquid-Wax-Cartidges-For-1-34-Candles (note that that’s the price for a case of 36)
Also, it looks like all the smarts are in the device, not in the cartridge: https://the-gadgeteer.com/2020/11/07/ludela-gen-2-candle-review/
@Jonas4321 @kensey at that price for refills, it cheaper much to get a bunch of these while supplies last… Why not order 10! You’ll have 120 refills for only $240!
Screw it – I’m in for two. Hurricane season will be here before we know it!
Real flames from a product sold here??
Usually we only get those with off-brand powerbanks and USB chargers.
@pmarin lolol
@pmarin and we used to get knives and speaker docks of all kinds…don’t miss the speaker docks, but I did buy knives from Meh on occasion (some were crap but some were good).
If people successfully refill them, and meh offers them again (highly likely) for the same price, then I will bite.
@KNmeh7 Likely sold out today and there are no more.
@KNmeh7 @troy You sure you didn’t set aside any for former VMPs/current Mehmbers??
@G1 @KNmeh7 Only 10. Good luck!
@G1 @KNmeh7 @troy Yup, there they went!
@KNmeh7 @troy Thanks for the head’s-up, Troy!
Scored one. Was not greedy just one.

@edsa I can think of far worse
@edsa they obviously don’t monitor Meh very often!!! This seems one of the better things actually.
@edsa Somebody needs another speaker dock, I see.
@edsa can someone send @edsa a lump of melted candy corn or a box full of trackers that don’t work???
In for 4x. Let’s hope we can diy some refills.
@jonjen2 so it’s a smart remote spark-gap ignited bunson burner… why can’t we use alcohol as a fuel (there may be a great reason)
@LincolnMics Well for one, you would not see the flame…
@jonjen2 you’re joking right? It’s effectively an alcohol lamp/bunson burner… didn’t you use them in science class?
@jonjen2 one of mine is already acting up, self extinguishing and then the “extinguish” fan sound was going off all night… i’ll mess with it some today
@jonjen2 there may have been some “oil” or other substance that got onto the electrodes or that top surface, i noticed a little “shiny” so i wiped it all up and it so far has not done the extinguish thing so if yours does it try to wipe it all down really well… just guessing i dunno what its deal is

@jonjen2 Amazing work, thank you and Bless up

OMG! As if there isn’t enough lazy, now we got candles that light and extinguish themselves at the touch of a button.
@kensey Are you using the included cord? I also noticed they won’t charge using a standard USB C cable, I’m guessing it’s a proprietary wiring pinout
@kensey @LincolnMics Luckily mine all charge, and indicate red and green. I used a USB C to C cable on one and it charged it just fine? I also used the provided cord with the other.

Next time.
I regret not getting 4 more.
I meant to say I wanted her to have two for the mantle. Sorry
