@katbyter we moved a lot, so I only got this a couple times. It was nice when it happened. Beat the normal “meet all the kids who’ve known each other for years”/“be lost in a sea of new kids” I normally faced. I was always good at making friends, but it still sucked.
@katbyter@simplersimon Same here! I went to a different school every year until 8th grade, and that school was a really hard one to adjust to - lots of stuck-up mean kids. So even though I loved to read and learn I hated school after junior high and on until college.
School lunch chocolate chip cookies. Most of the lunch food sucked, but they had these cookies that sat under a heat lamp and basically turned to mush and you had to eat them with a fork. Fantastic.
Making fun of the ugly girl, who grew into a beautiful woman, who would never give me the time of day. Oh, the inhumanity of it all! I am going away to cry now.
When I was in grade school/middle school I was always grounded. So going back to school was my only time with friends. In high school it was the house parties on the weekends.
My favorite thing about the first day of school was knowing I was a year closer to graduating. I was always a good student, but involuntarily waking up at 6 AM, being in home room before 8AM, lunch before 11 AM, tests, and coming home to hours of homework…I don’t miss any of it. I didn’t even get a computer at home until I was a high school freshman (1996) and the internet was Prodigy dial-up. Despite high-speed internet, not a ton has changed for kids today it seems (excluding the pandemic).
As a kid, I always dreamed about an unstructured workday (start at 9 and eat lunch whenever, no homework), but I did not quite factor in lack of summer vacation. Now, I’d kill for two months off in the summer!
@Shoebox23 become a teacher. You’ll get those two months off, which come with an excuse to pay you miserably, but also with lots of “voluntary” meetings you can attend along with the chance to relocate rooms annually.
I didn’t really enjoy school till college. Like someone else said being forced to to get up and learn, eat lunch and then go straight to gym was never fun. I actually sat out most of the time in gym (in high school) bc I wasn’t about to have my stomach upset from eating and then 5 mins later start running around.
I don’t know how these kids skip nowadays like we did, they’ve cut down all the woods around the school so there’s no where to run to and they have parking attendants stationed in the parking lots. So how do you get your car out? I had some of my greatest times in high school while I skipped class.
I loved school. Only child way out in the country, it was great to be with my friends again. Fresh notebooks, pencils, book bag, extra erasers, the big pack of Crayolas with sharp points, a new dress and new saddle oxfords. Loved it!!!
My birthday.
being born at the end of august, MANY times my birthday was on the first(or second) day of school.
…including my actual Day of Birth.
b/c of me being born in the morning (5:45am) my Siblings were late to the first day of school, at a new school. (new to them, we had moved over the summer while mom was pregnant with me.)
…a further sting to my siblings that day, (remember, late on the first day of a new school) our last name is Early.
I always got new clothes that I couldn’t wait to wear. But because of the stupid fashion industry, all the clothes would be cool weather clothes and it would be in the 80s & 90s pretty much for all of September and well into October.
I actually got fired up for my new lunchbox. Star Wars scene imprinted in a metal box with a matching thermos…I can’t explain how much that mattered to me back then.
Seeing friends again. And new pencils.
@katbyter yes, and a new bottle of that brown glue w the red rubber tip. Always smelled good! I may of had a problem…

There was never anything about going back to school that was pleasant for me. I would prefer not to need to expand upon that.
Nothing says back to school life the smell of a new box of crayola crayons. Weird? Yes.
@kjady If you were lucky, you got the 64 color box, with the built-in sharpener in back…
BTW: The distinctive smell of Crayola crayons is primarily due to a specific ingredient, Stearic Acid. And stearic acid is derived from Beef Fat!
So Crayolas are not Vegan friendly
@cinoclav I loved picking out a new one every year!!!
@cinoclav Came here to say this. New Trapper Keeper* notebooks. Wish I’d kept mine over these many years.
Just knowing that it was another year I didn’t have to work for a living.
/giphy working for a living
Knowing there was an end of the miserable season/term/session.
School lunch chocolate chip cookies. Most of the lunch food sucked, but they had these cookies that sat under a heat lamp and basically turned to mush and you had to eat them with a fork. Fantastic.
It was one step closer to the day when I wouldn’t have to go to school any more, I guess?
@awk Ah ha, YES! THIS DAY!
@awk @Lynnerizer Is “1983” a euphemism? Why else would it be in quotes? <wink, wink, nudge, nudge, if you know what mean ;)>
@awk @Lynnerizer I graduated in 1983.
A fresh Pee-Chee canvas upon which to develop my artistic prowess
@tweezak that is not my art, btw
@tweezak Oh, I was so impressed…
Aside from looking forward to the end of the school year, I had no favorite part of going back to school.
Making fun of the ugly girl, who grew into a beautiful woman, who would never give me the time of day. Oh, the inhumanity of it all! I am going away to cry now.
@hchavers Serves you right.
@hchavers I was disappointed when I looked up the one in my class. She only got older and had a kid that looks just like her.

Super cheap college ruled paper at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Fresh opportunities to skip school.

We moved a lot, I went to 12 schools in 3 states. Going back was rare until high school and college.
Nothing. What could possibly be good about the end of summer and freedom?
I was homeschooled…
School supply shopping. Fresh binder, notebooks, pens, etc. For some reason that always excited me.

@txag96 I never did get a lunch box.
My lunch (a sandwich, and an apple, pear or orange), was packed in a brown paper bag, top rolled down, with a rubber band holding it closed…
