A few things happened around the same time that triggered this, no one thing in particular. I know that’s vague, but tax law is pretty vague itself. If I can retweet ex-Meh-employee @katylava:
@Thumperchick If I were you, I’d lay low for a while. There’s some disgruntleds gnashing about being taxed. And don’t worry, I’m spreading the word that it’s your fault.
Illinois sucks no matter what. Restraint of interstate trade much? No, we had to pay ‘use’ tax on mail order all along. Technically if you bought anything from out of state that didn’t need/have sales tax paid then brought it back into the state yourself, then ill-a-fucking-noy demanded you pay them ‘use’ tax, because maybe you’ve deprived them of their mordida. Taken away their rightful ‘bite’ that they could use for payola and graft.
Its a sales tax on goods from other states. It is clearly unconstitutional, but change the ‘name’ to “use” tax and they get away with it. F*ck ill-annoy.
@duodec A lot of states have a line item for use tax; whether it’s seriously enforced is another story.
In the past, mail order was a limited business, so there was little enforcement. With the ease of the internet and fewer brick-and-mortar purchases, it’s a whole different level. And some governments are greedier than others.

@Barney I saw you blaming me like a scapegoat.

@Thumperchick Now that you are staff, you are always fair game.
Good times. Not the tax stuff. Just… Sharing a whiteboard with Harrison.
Who’d you hire in Illinois in the past week?
@mossygreen I don’t think it’s a new hire but rather, catching up with the laws. Mediocre has employees in multiple states already.

@duodec @narfcake Illinois does suck though.
I’m one of those rare animals that dutifully pays use taxes, so every time a site starts collecting sales tax in my state it’s less work for me.
But not Meh is not yet one of them.
