What if?
8Ya know how sometimes your brain squirrels off in a weird direction, and well, you can’t stop it.
So my weird direction today was what if COVID-19 was made in a lab? only, not a human one? I know there are enough geeks out there who read weird SF to follow me here.
I mean, what if a group of cruel aliens made it and let it free on Earth to see our reaction to judge if we were ready for contact- and we failed?
Or what if the idea was to come in and rescue the day so we’d see them as benevolent, and instead, they got it and died?
Or it is alien germ warfare and we got caught in the middle?
What’s your worst COVID SF nightmare?

Prometheus, I saw that movie. Benevolent, malevolent, we’re screwed either way if they don’t believe in something similar to the prime directive.

Unless aliens already know more about us than we know about ourselves, they wouldn’t be able to produce the virus.
Even if you believe in panspermia, and believe simple RNA strands can spread between systems to seed similar life everywhere based on RNA, our organs and biological makeup would almost certainly be different in form (even if evolution drove us to having organs of similar function, they would likely be different in form)…
If they studied us enough to know how our biology worked, they would probably already know how our culture works and how it would be likely to respond. It’s easier to observe culture than biology.
So if aliens did this to us, they would be doing it for lolz, not for science… And that would make them galactic sized bastards.

@OnionSoup
ya know
that is why they call it science FICTION
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@OnionSoup I think it was created by tiny alien artists who just thought it was pretty.
@Cerridwyn then they would be fictional bastards.
Remember, that to any civilization advanced enough to travel here with any forethought would consider us as being just a lowly life form equivalent to how we view mosquitos or spiders or trout. In other words, nothing. So to experiment with us would be like a 5 year old with a magnifying glass and an ant hill. Strictly for the lolz.
@someguynamedmat I view trout as significantly tasty.
This isn’t a nightmare scenario, but every time I read or hear someone say “COVID” I immediately think of Covidium. What is Covidium you (might) ask? I have absolutely no clue. In my head I imagine it as some sort of extremely rare element or alien material (à la Kryptonite).
Or maybe…
The virus IS the alien.
We are just breeders/planets.
Entire civilizations come, grow and die inside us, then build their own space fleet and fly off, seeking other bodies/planets.
We are too slow and oblivious to realize it.

Carp! I thought this was going to be about XKCD.
It was the Yogurt.
I wonder if Military labs really do make virus’ like you see in movies (where people turn into zombies) so they can launch them on to other counties in times of war?
@Star2236 What military would bother attacking another county?
@Star2236 you would have to find a way to make sure that the virus couldn’t attack your own people.
Like a deadly virus that can’t make sick anyone who eats faux cheese. America will survive on the backs of Kraft whilst the rest of the world turn into zombies.
MI6 meanwhile will be developing a virus defeated by marmite and black tea.
