What have I missed?
22I want to know what you’ve all been up to for the last few weeks. Arts n Crafts? Reading something great? Landscaping? Home renovation? Nothing at all? Tell me about it!
Here’s what I made:
Now I’m having some trouble getting those grid lines out. Up for suggestions on how to remove “washable” fabric pen marks.

Did you, I dunno, wash it?
@RiotDemon Tried that. Washed on cold and warm. No dice.
@Thumperchick I was just messing. Which kind of pen?
@RiotDemon darice washable fabric pen.
I also tried rubbing alcohol, since that works on sharpie… but no dice.
@Thumperchick have you tried soaking it in cold water with laundry soap?
@RiotDemon @Thumperchick
Maybe it just needs to soak and wash repeatedly over time or something
@f00l @RiotDemon I’m going to have to try that. Wish me luck.
@RiotDemon @Thumperchick
It’s awesome with it without the lines
POPSOCKETS! SPA KITS! POLLY POCKETS! AWESOME!
There it is, @Thumperchick’s last fuck to give.
@Targaryen I’ve been cracking that joke for a week now. It’s still funny… for me.
Isn’t that cool. What’re you planning to do with it?
@ChadP Well I heard this one dude plans on hanging it in his bathroom when it’s finished.
@Thumperchick Sounds like a cool dude.
Well done!
@tinamarie1974 Thanks!
I don’t do crafts of any sort, so this is the kind of thought an idiot (such as myself) would have: as a complete lay person, I would think a “washable” fabric pen would be able to be washed without coming out. Whether or not that’s correct, it seems to be the outcome in this case.
With that said, I’m kinda impressed by the tautological statement of your handiwork. The sentiment therein perfectly captures the failure of the finished product to achieve perfection, thus auto-commenting upon it’s own faults. It’s quite beautiful in its philosophical Meh-ness, actually…
@Thumperchick @shahnm is correct. A ‘washable fabric pen’ is meant to be permanent. Next time, go with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/LEONIS-Water-Erasable-Marking-78008/dp/B00QTIBOS4/ref=pd_lpo_201_t_1/132-2389537-7549907
@cinoclav @shahnm Well… damn.
@cinoclav @shahnm @Thumperchick dang. Didn’t even catch that. I just kept coming across permanent darice markers.
Did you try boiling it?
I’ve read that vinegar or hydrogen peroxide can remove those pen marks. Maybe try a little with a Q-tip on the smaller ones first to see?
This is amazing, omg! I wish I was this patient. Cross stitch just makes me want to throw things…
@thumperchick Bleach should work. Then again, I never wash my clothes, so maybe you shouldn’t listen to me. We have a laundry fairy that magically takes care of it all. I do accept responsibility for the lines though. Sorry
@carl699 - see the top of the thread
Beats me
Just got back from a 6 days/1765 mile RV trip with the grandkids. Rented a 30 footer from CruiseAmerica, drove to Nashville then up to DC then met our daughter in Chattanooga so she could take the kids home and we could return the unit today in time for me to go to work.
Went to Arlington to show them their great-great-grandparent’s graves, visited a bunch of monuments (since a lot of the museums are CoViD closed) and stopped by the DC campus of the school he attends in Nashville. Visited a couple of our friends along the way and had a blast over all. Kids had fun and really enjoyed their first RV experience. May have to do something like this again with them, but hopefully not so much actual driving!
@chienfou that’s a pretty great way to spend a few weeks!
@Thumperchick It was 6 days… but yeah, it felt like a couple of weeks!
@chienfou
Nice
There’s a thread for political discussion. This isn’t it.

Love your handiwork!!
I spent a week at the family cottage two and a half hours north of Toronto. Lots of fall foliage hikes, lots of good food, and no Covid anywhere nearby. If I could get unlimited internet there, I’d consider staying for a much longer time!
Hugs!
@curtise Sounds lovely!
i highly approve of this handiwork.
@carl669 does it count towards the fuck count?
@Thumperchick i will manually add one because of the pure awesomeness of it.
Alcohol. Ethanol or Isopropyl.
@PocketBrain be careful one is for internal application the other externally only
@PocketBrain Tried this one. Didn’t work.
@PocketBrain @Thumperchick Well how many did you have?? Maybe a couple more’ll do the trick…
Nice work! I think the grid lines not coming out of that particular piece is appropriate. Two things to try are baby wipes or oxi-clean.
@callow Oxi-clean is doable… Thanks for the idea!
Nice job! So did you design this yourself?
@Kidsandliz nah, it’s a pattern I got off Etsy.
See, this is what happens when you give a fuck.
@PocketBrain
/giphy have no fucks to give
@carl669
The giphy above seems to call out to you …
Tide Pen?
This won’t help with this project, but next time use Frixxion pens. The ink disappears when you apply heat (like with an iron). Of course it sometimes reappears when it gets really cold, but I doubt something like this would be displayed in a spot it would be cold enough to do that.
@msklzannie
Another job well done… by Captain Hindsight!
I second the Frixion Pen idea; it should wash out with just water and soap, anyway.
@msklzannie @PocketBrain Why is the eye on his front?
@blaineg @msklzannie @PocketBrain Because that’s the blue eye.
He has another eye in the back…
You have already tried a lot these and I am sure you googled first…
These have a couple of ideas it sounds like you haven’t tried yet.
https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/tips/a16037/stains-felt-marker-may07/
https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/remove-permanent-marker/
Of course with these laundry markers, for the most part, they eventually wash out - which of course is not useful if you really want them to say but would help here. The trouble is how many times you’d need to wash them and what that would do to your needlepoint.
Also if the that grid thing you used to needlepoint on is actually made of plastic instead of cloth you might want to read about removing markers from plastic instead of from cloth. That might make a difference.
Good luck.
I wonder if something like a handheld carpet extractor would work better. Get fluids in, pull fluids out with a mild detergent.
Perhaps the lines add to the sentiment? Nice work. I do not have the talent or patience for that stuff.
I have been boring. Home, work, back home. Puttered around the house and did some reading when I was supposed to be away on vacation.
Did anything take the lines out?
@callow not so far. I haven’t quite given up yet.
@Thumperchick Magic Eraser
@callow on fabric?
@Thumperchick Maybe ask a dry cleaning service what they’d use?
@Thumperchick Yes, on fabric. Spot test first, of course.
Get a set of pens in colors that match your project and draw over the dark lines?
Alternately, mount it behind a piece of mesh fencing of the same dimensions as kind of an artistic metaphor for our fucked-up world.
