Dawkins is a colossal piece of shit, but that’s still the closest thing I have. I’d prefer to align myself with Blackmore, but regardless: memetics was a thing before all these dumpster jpegs.
First time I came across “meme” was in Metamagical Themas, back before it meant crappy short-lived jokes on the Internet. It meant almost the exact opposite, referring to those things that stick in the collective conscience, societal memories that last. Fun how words get warped with time, like “literally”
I find text memes in particular to be extremely satisfying. They do get old eventually, but something about endless iterations on a phrase scratches me brain-itch.
Mostly the text thing, but it’s more than that. You can’t just put that text on any picture. It has to be an established picture that others are using for the same
@smyle agreed. a billboard recently appeared near our apartment using impact (as in the font) and classic macro setup (all caps, text on top and bottom of an image, no other info) only…it wasn’t a meme/macro. it was like someone with only a vague idea of macros’ existence but no understanding in a meeting said “this makes it funny.” no, it doesn’t.
(of course, they did get me to look at it longer than usual to try to figure out the punchline…but then again i no longer have a clue what it said or what the company was, because it was just a Generic Message Of Advertising.)
i don’t want to sound like a total hipster typing this, but fuck it - five years ago? more like at least ten.
not because i feel ~so cool~ or anything, but seriously memes/macros have been around a long time now. (/cries softly.) probably a couple of the first memes/macros on file in my brain:
@jerk_nugget Whether an image macro is from 1, 5, 10 or even 20 years ago, as long as it is recognizable (not necessarily by me, but by a significant contingent of internet users), it still qualifies as a meme in my book. What does not qualify as a meme, is every attempt at humor by every person on the internet.
My son and his friends will say “I just created this hilarious meme” and I will tell them “If you just now created it, there is no possible way it is already a meme . I may be the old guy here, but at least I know what the word ‘meme’ means” (‘meme’ having the inherent implication that it has spread beyond a handful of people )
@DrWorm yup! i said as much to someone else in this thread further up. totally agree. meme not only describes the specific content but also implies a trend that permeates many levels of internet/society. (internet society?) some lady using memegenerator dot com does not a true meme make.
@unksol yeah i fall into the latter category and so does my father so i’m used to things being around for quite awhile we can be not only nostalgic/sentimental but very ‘if it aint broke…’ types
@jerk_nugget lol if I had access to some altec Lansings that worked I’d probably still be using them. They last forever but eventually they give up the ghost.

@jerk_nugget you can tell by the speakers the bird is ancient. Eww bird poop feet in that persons dinner.
@unksol And by that Vanilla Coke in the fridge by the cat.
@unksol i don’t think you can tell a bird’s age by anything in that photo but yeah i wouldn’t be eating that macaroni haha XD
@Serafyna you can still (easily) buy vanilla coke
@DrWorm yup! i said as much to someone else in this thread further up. totally agree. meme not only describes the specific content but also implies a trend that permeates many levels of internet/society. (internet society?) some lady using memegenerator dot com does not a true meme make.
@jerk_nugget well those are 90s speakers so either an old bird… Or the owner is an old bird/nastolgic
@Serafyna I like vanilla coke. There’s a 90s camp memory that might be driving that though.

Me me me me me me pay attention to me me. I think I’m clever. Me me.
