@WilhelmScreamer Penn and Teller are fantastic… probably the best in the business right now. Their show in Vegas is fantastic and they meet with everyone after the show. Teller is super nice. Penn is a little intimidating, but nice as well. We’ll be seeing them up here in Minneapolis this November.
Love magic. Ever have since I was a kid. Checked an item off the bucket list back in May when I got to spend a night at the Magic Castle in LA. It was awesome.
We visited Vegas in '99. Saw Rick Thomas at the Trop and Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo. We didn’t go see Siegfried and Roy because the tickets were $100 and that made them “too expensive”. Let’s just say I’ll never forgive my dad (and he won’t forgive himself) for making that mistake.
@SpenceMan01 I’m assuming you stayed at the Magic Castle Hotel? I’m jealous.
I had the pleasure of seeing Siegfried and Roy while sitting at one of the tables on the inside of the stage circle. If you’ve ever seen National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation you may recall the Griswolds sitting in that area. The stage wraps around the seating area and those cats were circling incredibly close. The magic and illusions themselves were generally not as spectacular as I expected, certainly not on par with Copperfield, who I’ve also seen a few times. But the big cats - they definitely added an element of fear and excitement.
Found this chart, I sat in basically the same table marked, just on the opposite side in B1 stage right. It’s amazing what kind of seats tipping the guys at the door will get you…
@cinoclav Wow. I would have loved to be in those seats for S&R. I remember seeing some of their TV specials as a kid. Even if they weren’t as great as expected, there’s a certain level of historical value in actually seeing them live… at least for me there would have been. I’m no expert by any means, but I recognize that magic has a rich and proud history.
For the Magic Castle I didn’t stay at the hotel, actually. A friend of a friend is a magician in Vegas. He happened to be performing at the Castle the week that I was in LA. He got us in as his guests; no cover or dinner requirement. Highlights of the night included sitting front and center in the close-up gallery and getting heckled by Tom Ogden, enjoying a brief personal performance from Howard Hamburg and getting to see the original Pepper’s Ghost effect built by Yale Gracey as a proof of concept for the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland (a REAL treat for this Disney freak). The whole night was fantastic.
@SpenceMan01 That’s a truly incredible, once in a lifetime night. When you mentioned you ‘got to spend a night’ I read that as actually sleeping. I’d absolutely stay at the hotel there just to gain entrance to the MC.
You’re right, the primary reason I wanted to see Siegfried & Roy was for the simple experience of doing so in person. That was my first trip to Vegas. I spent more on show tickets that week than I did on anything else. Guess I should’ve gambled more and hoped for comps.
I love it when Meh does magic shows over on Morningsave. I even managed to do a quick screen capture of the time travel. There is just something about Steals on the Real that causes Morningsave to travel in time (I say this because it’s the second time I’ve managed a screen capture).
I studied magic for a bit as a kid, which sometimes takes away from some of the tricks, but I still love it. There are plenty that I have no clue how they’re done. I’ve seen several of the big names (some multiple times). If you ever get the chance to see An Ha Lim in person, do so. He’s one of the performers in The Illusionists traveling show and is a truly magnificent card manipulator.
@medz recently This American Life did an episode about magic (or it was a re-run that aired recently) and it was about how certain tricks were done, and how a really good magic trick will never be ruined by the secret getting out, and in some cases it’s even more awe inspiring. i really enjoyed it. there was a whole segment with penn and teller and how they take so much time to come up with a trick and how differently they approach things.
I mean, I like Penn and Teller. but that is the extent of my interaction with magic shows.

David Copperfield has also made me disappear.

One sure thing, they’re better than magic tells.

@Shrdlu Recently I’d swear I’ve seen a couple that ended two years ago.
It’s really odd. It seems like it’s always Steals on The Real…and here it is, yet again.
My wife is a great magician.
She makes all my money disappear!

My analytical mind likes to watch to figure out how they do things.
