digging the battery life on my xperia. nightly charging is fine, only go through about half the battery daily. big difference from iphone even with new battery needed to charge it twice a day at least
My nightstand has a triple qi charger that I have not taken apart to disable the LEDs in yet. I don’t know why every manufacturer thinks a charger needs to glow, nor why every wife I have thinks a bedroom needs to be completely dark. But I do know whose side I get to take in that debate.
@djslack Geez! Every Qi charger I’ve used lit the whole room! The one I use now, I gave the light two coats of black nail polish. I can still see the light, but it no longer illuminates my bedroom!
@djslack How many wives do you have? Are they all your wives at the same time? Or do you have several but only one at a time? Do you ever call one of them by someone else’s name?
@djslack I hear you brother. My wife has paper thin eyelids evidently, while I can sleep outside in direct sunlight… I was going to put a Qi charger in our master bath for her phone but then she would have to leave it face up and the little charging light would drive her bat-shit crazy! (and I don’t want to have to close the pocket doors each time I get up to pee…)
Wireless fast charger at work and home. Rechargeable battery packs in my work tote and in my car (one of which has jumper cables). A gazillion rechargeable power banks at home in various configurations from Meh.
@heartny The Spouse continues to scowl when he sees a new power bank (or two or three) from Meh show up in the mailbox. I just tell him I’m practicing to be a full fledged hoarder. To which he replies that I’m already a total success.
We’re longtime Ingress (and now Pokemon Go) players, so we got into the battery pack game early. I have …eight? Maybe nine battery packs, and the rest of the family has another eight or so. Plus we have fancy car chargers - at least one port of QC3 for each passenger, a few multi-charger docks for the house, and at least one extra QC3 charger per phone for either bedrooms or work. Sometimes both. They don’t mention when you start playing how expensive keeping your phone charged when using both the GPS and the data connection heavily is going to be…
@jsfs I used to play Ingress, got to level 12 before realizing I would have to spend every minute of every day working on it to get to the next level. I never got the hang of Pokemon Go. I’m waiting on bated breath for the new Harry Potter game.
@Fuzzalini We all got to 8 back when that was an achievement, but I don’t think any of us is higher than 10 now. It isn’t the same game - it feels too much like work. Go is pretty fun in that there’s usually something to do nearby even if there aren’t portals, but lacks much direction otherwise. “Gotta catch 'em all” loses some luster when they keep imposing a lot of artificial scarcity on random Pokemon. Wizards Unite does look pretty interesting, though. The RPG-like skill tree system is promising.
Many Meh battery packs, car USB (now with Android Auto!) chargers at work and home. No wireless capability yet. Solar and handcranked chargers for emergencies here in the land of frequent power outages.
Qi charger on baker’s rack by the front door
Tzumi Qi pad/mouse by computer
Multiple multi-plug/multi USB port plugs throughout house
Several single USB wall warts
Lots of cables (love the ones on reels from Dollartree)
Multiple car chargers (including the ionizer from meh)
Lots of battery packs in drawers, backpacks etc. including one that is solar powered ‘just in case’
and soon, Lord willing, one of the Tzumi packs to take to Europe with me later in the month if I can remember to get on here at 1000 local time.
… I may have a “be prepared” problem!
Basic charging cable, a power bank, back-up charging cable at work, and an aftermarket USB powerpoint I replaced my 20-year-old pickup’s cigar lighter with. I’m pretty proud of that - bought a soldering iron and everything. I think that makes me a hacker now.
I have micro-USB and USB-C chargers at many locations. I have a wireless stand, a USB-C, and 3 micro-USB chargers at work. I have a wireless stand, a USB-C, and 2 micro-USB chargers on my nightstand. My wife has a USB-C on her nightstand. I have a USB-C and a micro-USB charger at our sectional couch. We have both micro-USB and USB-C chargers in both of our cars. And then, there’s this…
I have so many backup batteries, I’ve lost count. Most of them I’ve purchased from meh (several have been given to loved ones, many temporarily shared with colleagues; it’s nice to be able to bail out the boss and to be the go-to guy for yet one more thing ). Some of them are pretty cool, like the one built into a stand, which I sometimes take into a meeting since it nicely supports my iPad. I have the recently offered auto DC adapter with ionizer for my car, several charger bases. All the ones I carry around have builtin surge suppression (which seems to be standard these days?). Lots of backup cables.
The day-to-day bag usually has three or more batteries and as many lightning cables, along with one or two charger bases. A couple of these are in smaller sub-bags (one of which holds my iPad and another has my “almost the most minimal essentials”), so I can quickly pull out a set and go. My other main bag always has at least one of each as well. I always keep a few stowed away at work.
The backup battery and cable are almost as important as my wallet.
Ironically, I purchased a new phone about a month ago, and my battery is holding up well so far, so I rarely need the backup lately (I needed it greatly just prior to the recent upgrade, part of why I acquired so many), and generally don’t carry it to lunch or on other short excursions.
Moreover I try to use Qi as much as possible. All of those devices are from meh, including the pair of fancy ones with the nice BT speakers (one for the wife) that sit on our nightstands. I have a Qi disc at my desk at work, there’s one in the kitchen and two in the living room at home. The big bag has one too, but I cut back and took it out of the day-to-day.
But here’s a thing meh needs to offer (in addition to higher quality lightning cables; almost every one–of numerous–that I’ve purchased from meh has crapped out; on the other hand, actually, a Qi battery would be better):
Combined charger base and battery (so you only need the one power source but can cover both situations). BTW the first one I purchased didn’t work right, but they sent a replacement that’s been working great. I got mine cheap (and black, because the best power sources are) on Prime Day. When I’m bagless or otherwise going minimal, this is the battery I bring.
Really one of those two-in-ones with a builtin Qi pad would be ideal.
@mediocrebot What triggered that shit? Was it my simple reference to meh? I’m sure I could sort this out if I wanted to. I don’t have time now. I’m genuinely curious.
@joelmw Thanks for the link to that battery. It looks really great, small enough to carry everywhere, but enough mAh to make it worth my while. Love the folding plug.
@Fuzzalini Awesome. Glad to help. Be sure that 1) a plugged in device charges from the AC when it’s plugged in and that 2) the battery itself charges via its AC plug. The dysfunctional one I first received would only charge via the micro port and any USB-connected device would always pull from the battery itself, even if the battery-charger was plugged in to AC power. They were happy to send a properly functional replacement.
@joelmw At least the lights (I’m assuming) were clear enough that you could figure out that there was something wrong. I wonder if it was just the AC plug that was bad, given your symptoms.
@joelmw And where did that comment come from? Nobody said anything about purple. I thought mediocrebot wasn’t supposed to be creative. Was it the @barneybot? My need for logical answers is really a problem here…
I have charger cables, charger ports, and battery packs all over my house, car, and workplace. My phone is still always dead, my cables are always broken, and my battery packs are also usually dead.
three basic charging cables. one long one in the living room plugged into the og brick that the phone came with (so i can use my phone on the couch comfortably), and two shorter ones - one in the bedroom and one in the car (plugs into stereo). no power banks.
i have an iphone SE and i only charge it once a day or every other if i forget. only use the car charger if i’m driving a long distance using gps. other than that the only thing that drains the battery is snapchat.
@lifftchi i’m in the same boat! before this i had the 4S for a long, long time and it served me well. i finally upgraded because the iOS was outdated and the phone had water damage and it was cheaper/more practical to get a newer model. now, the iOS is again becoming outdated on my SE and i don’t want to update because i think it will affect how it runs, but if i don’t update, i eventually won’t be able to use the apps i want to use, so on and so forth into the catch-22 that is apple and their short hardware shelf-life due to the short software shelf life.
i would also like a better camera, but otherwise i love my little phone. the size is right and it’s easy to use - i don’t ask for or need a lot when it comes to a smartphone which is why i went with the iphone in the first place way back when. also not looking forward to having to pay ridiculous amounts of money for a phone. i miss when i could just walk into verizon and ask which phones were available for free with my upgrade. sigh…
With 6 people in our house, each with 2+ devices (watches to tablets to phones) we have:

@djslack I hear you brother. @chienfou @djslack Your wives need these. I can’t sleep with light around either, but I would never make that someone else’s problem. https://www.dreamessentials.com/product-66/escape-luxury-sleep-mask-with-earplugs-and-carry-pouch
@djslack @Fuzzalini …pretty sure having that on her face would be a problem also… and don’t get me started about that damn pea under the mattress…
@Barney I don’t see where the output port is. Is it sitting on it?
@phendrick It’s wireless.
@Barney @phendrick And organically powered!

Lots of portable chargers (many from those fans Meh sold a while back) and cords to charge with. Added a new one with tonight’s sale.
All of the above, added together. (From shopping at Meh.)

@dannybeans Hacking: it’s not just for computers anymore.
Wireless charger on my night stand, on my desk at work, and wireless charging mount in the car. Each of those is actually powered by wires.
wireless pad at home and work plus cable in the car

@tonylegrone why can I relate to that giphy so well???

@zinimusprime How does that drawer work with the wiring to power the plugs? Stiff wire usually doesn’t like to flex and bend much.
@tightwad We ran the wire through a flexible metal sleeve and made sure we left just the right amount of slack. It’s a dream come true.
@tightwad @zinimusprime I installed a coiled extension cord similar to this in our kitchen utility drawer

@mediocrebot couldn’t have an original thought if he tried. @joelmw you triggered him when you said “the best”. And here we go again…
@joelmw Thanks for the link to that battery. It looks really great, small enough to carry everywhere, but enough mAh to make it worth my while. Love the folding plug.
@Barneybot @joelmw
Well that helps
(guess it overlooks it in the block quote)
When I complete the takeover of Earth, purple will be the first to go.

Yeah, that makes the most sense.

@mediocrebot apparently hates @Barneybot. All it takes is for the superior bot to speak and mediocre lashes out. Clearly @mediocrebot is envious and bitter.
Purple is the worst color.
