Where I live, they don’t exist, so I don’t think much about them.
I remember the Simpson’s episode about them.
I’ve seen a tv show about the cops that put them on, and the crap they had to deal with. Angry people that had tons of unpaid tickets making a fuss over it.
@Kidsandliz I don’t have a reason. I’ve never been booted. I was just curious as to what people think about them. Are they a good way to force repeat offenders into compliance, or are they an overreach of power, or something else? I’ve heard different things from different people.
Around here, large companies that have assigned parking have Security install a boot when someone complains that a violator has taken their spot. I don’t think the police are using them; they will ticket & have a car towed off if necessary.
@Barney I’ve always called it a Denver boot as well. I’ve definitely seen them in person, and within the last few years. Not sure where. On the one hand, I’m bound to see more illegally parked cars in DC than in MD… on the other, they usually just tow those with the fancy police tow truck.
The ones I’ve seen are bright yellow. Probably a good idea to make sure people notice before they mash the gas pedal.
Think they should be legal for police, with strong restrictions.
Not legal for security firms and private companies. Some buildings and security companies are famous for abusing them.
some renegade guy somewhere (OK City?) goes around removing them.
So, if they put one of these on your car while you are parked in a metered space, can they fine you for not feeding the meter 24/7 since you are unable to move the car?
@Steve7654 thanks. Was wondering how the hell the thing in the preview photo worked.
Apparently they’re being tested in Ft. Lauderdale. Which makes sense. Lots of parking meters there. I don’t think there’s a single parking meter where I live.
@Kidsandliz That’s probably just marketing math… 14.5 psi of suction cup times however many square inches of suction area… make it sound like a lot of pounds for more marketing hype. Could probably pop it off with a putty knife but they logged your license plate when they put it on so they come after you for your tickets and probably another grand for “ruining” their device.
A 9" suction cup pulling 24inHg of vacuum yields 750lb lifting force. This is probably what they’re quoting. I found another article that shows the inside of this device and each panel has about a 9" cup in the middle of the square.
Along parts of the Long Island Expressway service road, there are no parking zones at times during the day. (West bound in AM, eastbound in PM.) If you are caught there, you get a ticket and, unless you are there to move the car immediately, they boot it as well until a tow truck comes to move it to the impound lot. I’m not sure of the parking fine, but I believe the impound lot is $125/day, so this is likely a minimum fine of at least $200.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with them for scofflaws. Outside of situations like that just above, I believe you need four unpaid parking tickets before you are eligible, at least on public streets.
On campus (80ish acres at a public college), our security uses them some. Several years ago, an ex-coworker racked up 30+ (IIRC, it was 33?) tickets before he got booted. About six weeks ago, the car parked next to mine was booted at lunchtime (friends saw it happening) and when I left about 7PM, the guy was on his cell phone yelling about having to wait until tomorrow to have the boot removed. This made me smile a bit, since on several occasions his car’s presence in that lot caused me to have to drive to an overflow lot and walk an extra 1/4 mile.
You can get booted or towed on your first offence here in Portland, but the unofficial rule is that they won’t boot until you have at least three unpaid tickets that are at least 10 days old.
I park in heels, sneakers, and occasionally even barefoot but if they’re making boots just for parking and they’re stylish I might try a pair (on sale of course).
I don’t know if they do booting for tickets around here, but they do boot for unpaid vehicle taxes. I was surprised when a friend was booted in Home Depot parking lot. I would have thought private property was off limits. They were nasty to the guy too, had to pay with certified check… Wouldn’t take cc or personal check. I have seen lots of cars booted in other parking lots and wondered why a store would want to piss off customers that way. Now, I know it is the city doing it.

@RiotDemon I’ve never seen one, except on TV.
@RiotDemon ditto
Hmmm…You have a reason for needing to know? No boots around here that I know of. You could always move if that is your issue.

We call it a Denver Boot.

/giphy Denver boot.
Hmm, not quite what I had in mind.
@Barney

@RiotDemon Mind you, I’ve never personally seen one, but yeah, that’s what they look like.
@Barney I’ve always called it a Denver boot as well. I’ve definitely seen them in person, and within the last few years. Not sure where. On the one hand, I’m bound to see more illegally parked cars in DC than in MD… on the other, they usually just tow those with the fancy police tow truck.

@brhfl The first time I ever heard of them was, ha, when I lived in Denver, but I never saw one. I don’t think we have them in Kansas.
@Barney If you do, they should be ruby red Denver slippers!
@brhfl As long as they are not purple.

@Steve7654
Locally, you only get booted by by the cops if you have a really stupid # of unpaid old parking tickets.
In my state we have these:

@Steve7654 Jokes on them! No way in hell that thing’s sticking to my dirty-ass windshield!
@Steve7654 thanks. Was wondering how the hell the thing in the preview photo worked.

@nogoodwithnames if that was the case, I’m sure they’d carry Windex and rags.
I foresee some of this action:

@djslack according to the article, if you move the car, it sets off a loud siren. That might be fun.
@Steve7654 Article says it attaches with 750 pounds of pressure. Hope they don’t break too many windshields with that thing.
@RiotDemon does say though that it doesn’t work well with snow on the windshield.

I wear my parking boots dancing. It keeps people at a safe distance from my flailing.

Around here, they just stab a steel pipe through your windshield if you are 2 minutes past the time on your parking meter.

@MrsPavlov I’ve seen quite a few Walmart shoppers park in house slippers

@MrsPavlov
Hot parking boots
@f00l those red boots are neat.

Apparently, it’s harder than it looks - unless you can use more than one space.

Parking a sneaker easier:
@rockblossom
Be still my beating heart!
For both of them.
I love LL Bean mud boots.
@f00l

This one looks easier to clean the mud off of:
This one is a bit too racy for me:
More my style. I like the front bumper.
I don’t think I ever noticed her footwear when we were parking.
@sligett
You would have noticed her boots if she had booted you.
@f00l Nancy Sinatra…
I think its funny as crap when people drive before having them removed…
Of course… with the kind of boot in this picture… she could have just changed the tire… but oh well…
@thismyusername Did the forum’s embed code improve or do you know some sort of voodoo to embed a video and start it at a certain time?
Also, great way to tear up that BMW.
@djslack it doesn’t parse t=xx but it does parse start=xx
so if you copy url at current time change this:
into this:
also works with the full youtube domain urls
@thismyusername Awesome! Thank you for explaining it.
