What are your thoughts? counterfeit goods from eBay.
5I ordered cables from eBay, they were supposed to be OEM cables for Samsung... They were not, they had Samsung labels but were clearly counterfeit. What would you do? I've already gotten a return for the funds. I'm assuming they don't want the counterfeit goods back. (or maybe they do.) But what are your thoughts?

I'm a huge fan.
@marklog Funny... No... Should I contact eBay and counterfeit report. Should I rate the item poorly. I could be giving the seller more credit than due, but it could have just been a few bad ones in a batch... I mean, I'm not a professional in detecting counterfeits. But from what I can see they were counterfeit. I don't feel I should have to return the items as they are counterfeit, they should be destroyed.
@sohmageek I ended up with a counterfeit item and the seller instantly refunded my money. However, it was obviously counterfeit & I'm sure that the seller was hoping that I would drop it once I received the refund. I reported the seller and left negative feedback because I would prefer that someone else not get stuck with a counterfeit item (especially if it was something that they needed in a timely manner).
I ran into that with a Samsung charger a few weeks back. Pissed me right off.
@jaremelz This pissed me off too, I had purchased a 5 pack a long time ago from eBay that was actual OEM cables... This was very good visual fake, but very poor cable (2 were ordered, one had a short in the cable the other wasn't functioning properly.)
Did the seller return your money, or was it PayPal or something? Cause if it was the seller, and they didn't ask for a return, don't.
It bothers me from eBay or anywhere for that matter. I have had to return obviously misrepresented products in order to get a refund from eBay. Then I see the same listing go up again. There does not seem to be a downside for the thieves. Reporting fakes does not seem to help either. I get really frustrated with eBay sometimes.
I would not return the item unless eBay or PayPal requires it for the refund. Unfortunately they probably have a huge box full and do not care about getting them back since it is cheaper to have you toss them.
Good going, Goat. You got me fired up. It will be me making your ears warm when the alarm goes off in a few hours.
If you don't report it, then there's no way they'll be stopped. Even if your 1 report doesn't shut down that crap, maybe you and 5 other people can get that seller booted.
eBay has really sucked for awhile, but on something like this I'd say it's situational, mainly depending on whether the seller should have known better or not. Not everyone is necessarily an expert on items they sell, and everybody has the right to make an honest mistake--I'm not sure if I'd know a real Samsung cable from a fake one either. On the other hand if the seller primarily deals in cables, or has a large inventory of this particular cable, then they probably did know and they deserve to be reported for trying to misrepresent their goods.
Counterfeit Apple earbuds - awesome. 5 for $3? Yes please. Who cares if they break after two weeks. Five for $3.
Counterfeit everything else - awful. I pay full price to only buy from sellers I know and trust for cables and chargers. I've seen counterfeit Motorola chargers explode, counterfeit Anker batteries explode... I don't take the risk. I pay for OEM prices. I just bought a $79 Macbook charger direct from Apple for the same reason.
I vote no return, but refund. IIRC PayPal tells people to destroy counterfeit goods.
In the past year ebay removed my listing for a Joan Rivers Watch and an Atari shirt, because those are both clearly highly counterfeited items.
@gnext2 you were selling your Joan Rivers Watch?
@edwinwillmore hahahaha
If you got the $ and they didn't request it, don't return it. If you think it could be an honest mistake (see what else they sell and what their feedback is like) then give them the benefit of the doubt that they didn't know. If you get even the slightest hint that they were pulling a fast one, report them to ebay! Definitely! We sell on eBay and we want the scammers out! We also try our hardest to make sure something is authentic. We would be horrified if someone accused us of selling a counterfiet item and would be SO apologetic! And we would be devastated if someone turned us in for it if it was an honest mistake. So please be careful how you proceed from a seller perspective...it's amazing how ebay sides with the buyer in all cases and it is very hard as a seller to keep an excellent reputation. Sometimes mistakes happen. If you think there's a chance this was a mistake let it go. Report and let ebay investigate it if you think there is a chance. They will consider your history and the seller history to evaluate their next move.
Your item probably came from china. Those sellers run dozens of ebay accounts, selling tons of crap at fire sale prices. At those prices, a shady seller can get 100k feedback very very fast. Feel free to report them, but I can assure you they have five more well rated accounts already cooking.
Add to that the fact that our government subsidizes their shipping, and they will never go away. (E-packet from Hong Kong, less than .5 an item. Cheapest domestic shipping, $1.97 first class)
@givemeyoursoul makes the same kind of sense as junk mail costing less postage than birthday cards.
@AlQ 'murrica
Not seeing the judgement call here. If the goods are so clearly counterfeit, report the heck out of them and downrate them. Clearly say why in your rating. Doesn't take much effort.
If you don't want to report them to eBay you could maybe report directly to Samsung and the Feds. If the seller made a legitimate mistake they would probably pass on who their supplier was. If they were being intentionally deceptive they're criminals and will sting someone else, perhaps someone who wouldn't recognize that they've been swindled. http://www.stopfakes.gov/consumer-tools/report-fake-goods
"I want my "Genuine X" product for 1/10th the actual cost!"
[later]
"I AM OUTRAGED THAT I GOT COUNTERFEIT GOODS!!!"
@Pufferfishy
Nope. If they state it's an actual whatever, it has to be an actual whatever. I might or might nor buy, or be able to justify the price. And some sellers make honest errors. But sellers don't get to lie.
@f00l RIGHT! The ad should match the good. Good deals exist. I dump my crap for 10% of the value just because I have an issue with placing things that work in the garbage. That combined with my super-minimalist approach. I buy things and then sell things cheap. Many things I give away. Some things I have trouble giving away. When I sell on eBay I need the buyer not to gloss over me because 'Oh that's exactly what I need but it's way too cheap to be real'. Just take it off me damnit, but I don't ship items for free with free shipping. :P
@sohmageek Leave negative feed back at least saying "The item received was counterfeit. Seller refunded money asap."
If you were able to tell, the seller more than likely knew as well. It's dishonorable, and you should warn other potential buyers. If they still choose to buy, they are at least making an informed decision.
Sadly I can't imagine anything will happen if you report them. I've done this in the past and nothing ever happens. More trouble than it was worth IMO. In my situation it was a brick and mortar doing a bait and switch. I reported them to BBB, spent almost 3 months dealing with stuff. In the end, they got a small ding on their accreditation.
I am a huge advocate for counterfeit "luxury" good retail and fashion items. If quality is not needed and it is not a performance item then go for it. Back alley fake Gucci--sign me up. Imitation Rolex--I am all about it. Fake mac-book charger... no thanks. It is too risky and people and products can get hurt. Make a report if you are sure it is fake.
@connorbush
Dont get this....Dont do back alley fashion goods...but then i dont do visibly named fashion goods at all. And fake luxury watches, why? There are plenty of great qual inexpensive, nice-looking watches. Who wants to have "Rolex" on their wrist, and know it's fake, when nobody cares what's on your wrist?
Is it just me? Mom's friends whispered i was weird when i was young.
@f00l at least the counterfeit electronics are made in the same country. maybe even the same city.
Hello, is this USB Samsung charger real or fake ?
Samsung ETA-U90EWE
(iffy link removed ~TC)
Bought a "genuine Casio G-Shock" once on Ebay that was clearly counterfeit when received. Msg'd seller. Seller responded by admitting (thru ebay internal msg system) that watch was fake, and then accused me of being a bitch, "How dare you expect me to send you a real one?!"
So called ebay, reported seller for knowingly listing fakes, then filed dispute. Got $ back, seller insisted on being a total constantly whining pain. Returned fake watch because seller insisted, part of process. Left neg fb.
Bizzarro Land. I called Ebay after all was done and asked them to take action re seller knowingly listing fakes. They said "Yes, we care about that, thanks for report." I suspect they did nothing, seller still there 1 year later.
Wish i had reported seller to Casio.
Fwiw, have bought several excellent vintage G-Shocks on Ebay, v happy w them.
Bought a copy of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 back in the day off eBay. Bootleg cartridge. It worked, but threw an error message up when I turned the system on. I raised holy hell on eBay and the seller sent me a legit cartridge.
That's the only bootleg item I've ever knowingly purchased on eBay. Mostly i just buy clothes, these days.
I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (Int'l version) off ebay a couple of weeks ago. By FAR the most expensive item I've purchased on the site, and definitely made me nervous. Went off without a hitch, though, so happy DISC!
PS. awesome phone!
@DaveInSoCal Shame you missed out on the free GearVR promo!
@dashcloud YES! By 3 days, i think.
@DaveInSoCal
Are the S7 half price deals dead?
@DaveInSoCal
I bought a v expensive set of headphones from Moscow individual seller, around 2/3 Amazon refurb price. Seller showed pix of headphones, box, retail recpt, and they had Ebay money-back promise, so took a chance. They didnt come, they didnt come....tracking is shitty from Moscow, just showed them making it to PO at Moscow airport a few days after purchase, then nothing
You only have 30 days to file an Ebay resolution request, so i filed one but did not pursue it, just waited.
They arrived about 45 days after purchase. Excellent. They have arrived at JFK airport less than a week after seller shipped. Then went not to PO but to customs, which sat on them for more than a month. Finally the PO got them and the tracking went live again. Sweet.
Closed the Ebay case and thanked the seller. V happy.
@f00l I'm not sure...
@f00l I'm not sure about half price but I got an email from vzw today wanting to extend the bogo offer to me (if i activate another line).
I preordered and got the gear s2 free, then picked up a gear vr brand new on ebay at a discount. Ebay will probably flood with them and drive the price down, but i was impatient (and heard there was a deadline on the free content from Oculus).
@djslack
Costco was doing some sort of half price deal on a single s7 phone, as well as the BOGO rebate deals.. Think you buy the phone (can finance), wait 90 days (due to costcos 90 day return window), then file rebate, they send you gift card for 1/2 price of phone. I know they did this for t-mobile, think some other carriers also. Found it on slickdeals. Go there and search for "costco samsung s7" or something like that. Dunno if offer still open. No doubt terms and conditions
