Mehricans, I wonder what kinds of games you guys like to play?
I tend to be into the Strategy games, RPG, and MMO (however I never got into WOW... nor do I really care to) Some hack and slash are good. What do you guys like?
@Lotsofgoats@brhfl I freaking love roguelikes, BUT only if make some sort of permanent progress when you die and have to start over again. If you haven't played Rogue Legacy it's what really got me into them, amazing game. I also love Risk of Rain if you want a scifi shooter instead of the fantasy setting often used in roguelikes.
Lately on iOS the two I'm loving are Hoplite and Dream Quest. Dream Quest was a direct recommendation from the forums and it does an amazing job of mixing a deckbuilding game with a roguelike, even though the art is hilariously terrible MS Paint art. Hoplite is a really genius game, super strategic and addictive and can't recommend it enough.
@JonT@brhfl yea something about learning how to play the game in order to avoid catastrophic death really does it for me... then you get to the point where you've gathered really good items, finally got over that level cap you couldn't breach, and happen to open the wrong door. RIP. (۲ಥ_ಥ)
I'll give those a look. ToME and Angband (+ variants) are all freeware for PC (and Mac and linux maybe?) and pretty well done. ToME is unusually pretty for a roguelike. Angband defaults to ASCII but there are tilesets for download.
@JonT I'll check out the recommendations when I'm not at work. I actually did look into Dream Quest last time it came up in the forums, laughed at the artwork, and just never got around to trying it out (not sure how I'll feel about the deckbuilding elements). Hoplite looks great! I'm a big proponent of the finality of death in roguelikes, but I like how NetHack/SLASH'EM handles it - occasionally you'll find graves of players who have fallen before you and (spoiler alert!) digging up said graves will get some of your loot back, albeit cursed.
@Lotsofgoats I do enjoy some Angband, have not tried ToME. Speaking of pretty, if you've never played Brogue, you should just to see how it handles ASCII. Uses a very large color palette, the water and lava 'shimmers,' lighting in dungeon rooms is subtly shown… it's beautiful ASCII. Oh, and Castle of the Winds, that was great stuff back in the day, probably my first Roguelike(like) as well.
@brhfl Brogue is amazing! I've been on an 868-HACK binge lately as well. In addition to those listed above, I also enjoy Dungeons of Dredmor, though perhaps not as much as ToME.
What do I play? I've been a gamer geek since I played my first computer game in 1972. Yes, computer game, not video game and yes, 1972. It was a star trek game.
Right now I play.
Avatar, an old fashioned text based MUD where I am staff. www.outland.org
Cybernations, a browser nation building game, I run a peaceful alliance there.
On Kongregate: Dawn of the Dragons and Legacy of a Thousand Suns Wartune - West Coast Server 17 - Aristocrats #1 (my current serious addiction).
And yes, I'm female. When I used to play dice games, and walk into game shops, I'd get the 'you're a girl' stare.
@Cerridwyn I just got into MTG so I completely understand what you're talking about with that last bit and it's really shitty that we dudes feel a need to have ownership over gaming.
@Cerridwyn My brother owns/runs a MUD that's been around for a long time, but they have had a dwindling player base in the last few years.. Check it out sometime if you ever have a chance. They put a ton of work into it over nearly 2 decades.. http://tharel.net/ I used to play a ton, but with the two kids now I just never find time. I'm sure some people still recognize the name Kadagan though ;)
PC MASTER RACE REPORTING IN FOR GLORY. I need a compelling storyline to play a game to completion, otherwise I lose interest. And I only play single-player games. That's because, in the late 90s, I became waaaaaay too involved in Diablo/Diablo2/NWN guilds. Nearly flunked out of my freshman year at Uni because of it. So no multiplayer ever again. Especially as with good single player games, I get completely subsumed by them, anyway. It's the same as with any compelling book: all my waking hours are consumed by the world within the media, and I walk through any life not reading/not playing as though within a viscous, gray, faded brainfog, only existing and acting on autopilot 'til I can get back to the book or game. Even my dreams turn into scenarios enacted within whichever world(s) I'm experiencing at the moment. Currently, I'm playing Pillars of Eternity in my first playthrough. Well, I'm actually on a two week break from it because I recognized I was giving up way too much sleep and brain time for it. So, not allowing myself to play again until this Thursday. Also at various points of replays of: Vampire The Masquerade, Dragon Age Inquisition, Wasteland 2, Deus Ex (original), Thief 2, and the Mass Effect trilogy (garrus is my 4ever <3 dinokitty boo!).
@goldenthorn I played a ton of Diablo/D2. I also have a ton of hours put into Path of Exile (887hrs on record). I play other random stuff inbetween, but mostly PoE. Now they are releasing the Act 4 expansion soon, so that will be more time sunk into the game. It's getting even more complicated and I love it.
@sohmageek I would have agreed with you before the major overhauls and patches to D3. I had a lot of fun playing through the story but they obviously completely fucked up the loot system with the real money auction house. Once they made the changes to that and released Season 1, I liked it more than PoE.
@goldenthorn@The_Baron Diablo 2 was the first game that I really got into. The summer I started playing it I often knew it was time to stop playing because I heard the newspaper hit the door at 5:30 in the morning.
@JonT ehh I was a little annoyed that the real money closed. I liked that I could spend a few dollars instead of hours grinding. Now I do have to say drops are more often than they used to. But I still was hoping to sell some of the things I purchased to recoup some of the cash. It's like matrix online. But that was a soe/aol choice pulling aim out of the client. :(
@JonT The D3 balance is a lot better in Reaper of Souls, since they closed the real money auction house. I play D3 when I get tired of PoE. - I was replaying Diablo 2 but not as much. I played the crap out of that game in 2001 when Lord of Destruction was released. Necromance 4lyf
@sohmageek The auction house was nice at first, but got way out of control with the bots infiltrating the system. Inflation just exploded and it became impossable to find good gear. It's a lot easier just to grind out gear now with the new loot system.
@goldenthorn@The_Baron@JonT ah D2...the gateway game...my wife was not a gamer until she sat at a friend's computer and ran through half the level without killing anything. Then she joined the dark side with all the hell cows and muling sessions, and a few years later was the one asking me to buy dinner home...and to hurry because I was needed at the raid (LotRO). Unfortunately, as others have already mentioned in this topic, kids are apparently a very effective method of rehab...
I'm embarrassed to admit... I'm a mainstream FPS player almost exclusively. I love the online multiplayer dynamic. Playing against other fallible humans rather than AI bots ads a very unique dimension to FPS gaming.
Unfortunately I backed a dead horse the last time I upgraded my console... sadly there are few FPS options on Wii U so I play COD almost exclusively. I also enjoy a racing game now and again. Currently playing Mario Kart 8 regularly.
One good thing about the Wii U... no hackers. Yet. I stopped playing PC platform games for that reason. If you weren't a hacker you didn't have a chance in hell.
Board games. Some that I'm enjoying now and that make it to the table most often are 7 Wonders, Pandemic, The Castles of Burgundy, Small World, and Troyes.
@pitamuffin Cool. Not a lot of board gamers out there anymore. I love going into 'real' game shops with obscure board games that I can buy for gifts. Used to also play MGTG and found this after it went out of print - http://www.healingblade.com/ - working in health care I could have bought copies and copies and copies for people.
@pitamuffin I actually thought this post was going to be about International Tabletop Day when I clicked on it. Finally got around to playing my copy of Small World on Saturday and enjoyed it, even though I came in last.
@bruceoite Don't know how to add new lines in replies, sorry. My favorites lately have been Star Realms and Coup. I have been itching to play some more Pandemic though.
@bruceoite Small World is one of the few games that our teenage boys will actually play with us. It doesn't take terribly long, it's fun because they get to attack each other, and it has things like Berserk Orcs and Pillaging Ratmen! What's not to like about any of that??
I keep it simple. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros on the WiiU. I'm really excited because I found an old Operation board game in perfect shape at goodwill this weekend. We've played 3 times and are going to again after dinner. Blokus is a lot of fun, as is Uno.
I like fighting games, even though I am very bad at them. Playing them is very nerve-racking and emotional, which I don't really get from any other sort of game anymore. I also like Japanese-style (riichi) mahjong.
I used to like all sorts of games. But now when I open my steam library of 100+ games, many unfinished or never started, I just scroll through it for a while and say, "meh."
Mostly PC games like Max Payne, Bioshock, and Borderlands (you get a dune buggy with a rocket launcher and unlimited ammo - I need one for my daily drive!) Also endless time wasters like Plants vs. Zombies or any tower defense.
Also spent a lot of time with various versions of Zelda, but the original is still the best. Any old Atari 2600 or Sega game is fun to fool around with, usually with emulators now.
When there's no electronics, then chess, bridge, spades, or hearts. No gambling, because when I look around the table, I can't see the sucker.
A little of this, a little of that... most of it being Nintendo.
Right now I'm playing Assassin's Creed: Black Flag on WiiU and World of Tanks: Blitz on the iPad, and the gf and I just started Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze on the WiiU.
And of course, Mario Kart 8 has new DLC coming up this month.
@sohmageek I love HotS. I've been in since the alpha and they've made a ton of good changes. Still think their pricing model is absolutely absurd, but it's a lot of fun and that's always what Blizzard does best.
I love board games. There are far too many great ones to list, but a couple of my favs are Ticket to Ride Europe and Discworld. Also, I invent board games.
@bruceoite Two so far (at gamesbyrex.com, which for some reason seems to be taking forever to load right now), with a third just a few weeks away from completion and a fourth in design. I've been using a print on demand game company (thegamecrafter.com) to publish.
The three Xbox games in heavy rotation right now are Geometry Wars 3, a downloaded demo of a golf game that covers my occasional need for something twitchy yet dull, and Watch Dogs. The main phone game is a knockoff of Boggle. For non-electronic games, I throw wadded-up supermarket receipts around the apartment and the cat brings them back to me. (Not sure who's winning.)
If I had to boil it down, I would guess co-op multiplayer games.
In high school, I played co-op StarCraft via a direct modem connection. In undergrad, I played Quake 2 and X-Wing Alliance LAN games, along with Diablo 2 Battle.Net. @JonT I keep drinking caustic gas potions, nbd, but once you have that figured out they're an awesome weapon against gangs.
I hallucinated hard when fighting against a toad at one point. I gotta say hallucination is one of my favorite roguelike features when it's done well. same goes for not knowing what a consumable or castable does before using it. flavor, bro. all about the flavor.
@JonT That first quaff-identification of a potion of incineration is a Brogue rite of passage… Thanks for the Hoplite recommendation… Spent last night 'ascending' instead of sleeping… well worth it!

roguelike, the worst genre to enjoy*
*enjoyment not always enjoyable
@Lotsofgoats Which? I was a huge SLASH'EM addict for a while, now I mostly hit Brogue.
@brhfl the first (kinda but not really) roguelike I played was Castle of the Winds. more recently it's been various Angband variants and ToME.
@Lotsofgoats @brhfl I freaking love roguelikes, BUT only if make some sort of permanent progress when you die and have to start over again. Ones that @carl669 hasn't chewed on yet. They're hard to find, though.
@juststephen it's not my fault you left the 5.25" Leisure Suit Larry floppy discs laying around.
Almost exclusively flash games. I'm level 42 on Kongregate and I tend toward tower defense, scrolling shooters and the occasional idle game.
I like almost any game that's not a sports game.
On computer:
Crayon Physics
VVVVVV
Hack'n'Slash
On mobile:
Gem Miner 2
Survive! Mola Mola
Ridiculous Fishing

escaping the huge roguelike thread above to say that I'm broguing and I'm roguetrigued so far
the flicker effects and other little details really are cool
RIP Steve #1. I went out on my own terms, chucking a caustic gas potion at some monkeys and jumping into the fray. It was that or an acid mounds.
Things learned: I hate acid mounds.
@Lotsofgoats I also played some Brogue last night. I went down in flames…literally. I drank a mystery potion that turned out to be a fire potion and everything was on fire, including me. Then I started drinking all of my other potions to see if they would help me but all they did was make me hallucinate so I was on fire and tripping hard. This game is awesome.
@Lotsofgoats Agreed re: hallucination, and in Brogue it really serves as a vehicle to show off those crazy color effects…
@brhfl haha, well I'm happy to have been initiated and looking forward to playing more. Glad you're enjoying Hoplite! It's in no way a roguelike, but if you're interested in CCGs at all Hearthstone just launched to phones yesterday.
Mind games.
Or do I?
this is now a brogue thread
I was hallucinating pretty badly but figured I'd do ok against whatever monsters appear in level 3 even if I can't tell what they are. I was wrong. whatever I was attacking was hitting me with bombs. I needed to shake off this hallucination and heal some, so in desperation I drank a potion.
a potion of hallucination. RIP.
