Well, this is just swell
28The possum visitor in our garage (we usually get them in the winter months, they’re cool, the cats don’t mind them and it’s not uncommon to see one curled up in a cat condo during the day) is behind my storage cabinets against the big garage door. I was just out there, heard noises, wondered if he was stuck. Got the flashlight, checked him out. Not him. Her. And I saw one little possum baby, hairless.
Hubby ain’t happy. I just know she’s safe where she is and she will leave when she feels safe enough. Possums are transient, so I’m not worried about it.

POPSOCKETS! SPROCKETS! DAVY CROCKETT! AWESOME!
OMG, but just one baby? I thought they had a litter?
@tinamarie1974 That’s all I could see. I’m sure there are more. I just saw the one crawling close to her tummy.
@lisaviolet @tinamarie1974 others are probably in the pouch
@CaptAmehrican @tinamarie1974 i didn’t get a very good look. As soon as i saw the baby, i turned off the flashlight and left the area.
@CaptAmehrican @lisaviolet likely the right thing. No need to upset mama
Possums eat ticks… A lot of ticks… They will clear your yard of ticks.
I’m always happy to see possums on my property.
@OnionSoup They like avocados and cat food, too.
@lisaviolet yeah we used to feed stray cats and the possum would eat out of the same bowl that the visiting cats would use.
Next time I have an avocado infestation I’ll have to remember to invite some possums around… Although avocados don’t tend to last long enough to become an infestation here.
@OnionSoup We have a couple of avocado trees. This year, they’re loaded with fruit, next year is gonna suck, no blossoms at all this year.
@lisaviolet @OnionSoup In one neighborhood I lived in we fed Wild Man (orange feral) and after the feral had eaten a very, very fat possum would waddle up to the food dish and scarf down anything left.
How do they get in and out when the cats can’t get out?
@RiotDemon They are a lot better at climbing. Check out photos of their paws, they’re like little hands.
How do you know the hubby isn’t happy? Did the lady possum not tell him? Oh, is it not his?
@njfan my hubby isn’t happy. He’s afraid I’ll adopt the new fam.
@njfan The possum milkman might be involved
@ELUNO @njfan
Same story here a few years ago…just make sure Momma has a way to come and go. After the babies grow a bit, the little family will move on. And the babies are so stinkin’ cute and curious!! Possums have always been welcome here and the cat doesn’t mind them at all.
Oh, and Hubby got over it…
@jimeezlady She does. I checked last night and she wasn’t behind the container (it’s six feet high), but next to it. My worry was she’d be stuck, but nope.
I’m pretty sure that’s where she had the babies.
Baby possums ARE adorable! The little I saw of the one, well, it was a fresh baby, I turned off the flashlight and left right away. I don’t want mama to be worried.
That’s very sweet! I miss the possums back east - here in California they were introduced for food and hunting (ick) and are slowly being eradicated in the SF Bay Area as a non-native species but there are still some around.
I had a neighbor that had raised one from a baby, and it would sleep curled up in her lap clutching her thumb with its little hands and the prehensile tail wrapped around her arm.
@stolicat awww
@stolicat
@stolicat never heard of hunting possums. But there is something to be said for invasive species. Just sad when they are intentionally introduced then have to back track it.
If you eat meat you don’t ever get to say ick to hunting other than you dislike killing it your self
@unksol (O)possums (thanks @cinoclav and @lisaviolet below) are hunted where they exist, just like rabbits & squirrels. My ick was not in regard to hunting, I have no problem with sustenance hunting, but not too fond of importing some slow little
mammalmarsupial 1500 miles from its natural region just so some “sportsmen” can blast it for amusement.And they can be a problem, good climbers with a taste for bird eggs. Luckily the raptors, coyotes and bobcats keep them in check.
Just to clarify…
@cinoclav O!
