(no, I am not that kind of parent, and I don't think parents should do that to their kids, but that doesn't mean that it's not funny)

It's interesting that you see the above gif as bad parenting--assuming that the parent promises their kid Disneyland only to take them to the dentist. When I watch the gif I assume that the kid went to the dentist and the parents are rewarding him afterwords by taking him to Disneyland. I think this proves that I am a better parent than you.
@phatmass Ha, maybe you're more optimistic as well?
The gif actually starts with the question, then the dentist at the end.
My boy is only a year and a half old, so he doesn't know what Disney Land is anyway...
@luvche21 Totally agree with everything you just said, especially the part where you did not deny I am a better parent. Your honesty is only exceeded by my humility.
@phatmass lol, well that must only be the case because you've been a parent longer than me? Just wait until I catch up!
@luvche21 Every time I see things involving this kind of "trickery", it reminds me how I've never been to Disneyland in my life. Hmmm...
@FroodyFrog Me too.
@FroodyFrog Yeah, but the dentist? Been there, done that, amiright?
@FroodyFrog Maybe it's time to plan a trip on your own. In fact, if your parents are still living, invite them along !
@phatmass I saw the kid being worked on and thought he landed in the ER instead of Disney because his seat belt wasn't on right. Yea, I'm THAT kind of parent.
@phatmass I have no kids. I can go to Disneyland or the dentist whenever I want! Not sure which one is more fun for me, though....
Thanks I took the Kindle books (all public domain but still) I've never had a good Audible Experience so I'm skipping those
@Foxborn There are probably another 30-50 public domain books in that same series (with that same cover). Look in the suggested purchases or what other people have bought sections on one of the product pages and you'll find a bunch more. All of the Oz books and a bunch of others are there. I only made the list for those with cheap audiobooks.
Meh
no
Half those books are public domain
you can get free ebooks that are public domain at gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page
free beats cheap, and these files are kindle compatible
@WilhelmScreamer If you read it, all of the ebooks listed there are free. It's the audiobooks that are cheap (plus the one that's free).
@luvche21
Yeah, the point is to get cheap, professionally recorded audiobooks. Which means getting the matching free kindle book.
Much thx for tracking all this down.
Downloading/playing audible files on a computer is a pita. However, on android or ios it's dead easy, fast, and the player is quite good. Most bluetooth headsets will control the player - i use LG Tone+.
@f00l I tried yesterday to download their PC program to play them. That didn't work and was oddly hard to download my purchases and even uninstall the program.
I'll try it out on Android, although I wouldn't mind putting them on an old iPod - my issue with this is that I don't use iTunes any more, so I'm not sure if I can get them to work otherwise.
@luvche21
on a iphone or ipod touch, get the excellent audible app. Use that to download and play these.
If you have a traditionsal ipod that doesnt run apps, you can get them onto the device by syncing w itunes. Audible has a version of their desktop downloader application that works with itunes.
Or get a cheap unactivated older android or ios phone. No need for cell service. Just use wifi to create an itunes appstore account, or a google play account, grab the free and excellent audible app, use wifi to download the books (fast). You can be in airplane mode or away from wifi and still play the books, and your fav bluetooth headset will work fine.
Ios or android will give the best experience i know of, with or without cell service.
@luvche21
Also audible cs is quite decent, so call them if something acts up. Been so long that i used something other than a phone for audiobooks that i dont remember the tricks of using the pc downloader anymore.
Phone app is the way to go, if you have a phone handy.
@f00l Yeah, I'll definitely get it going on my phone. I'm considering getting one of those cheapo no contract smart phones (for around $10) to play around with as a media device and might use it for something like this.
I'd like to put it on my old iPod (no apps), but I don't use iTunes anymore since I've moved to a better program. I don't think it will work without iTunes though.
Thanks for the ideas!
@luvche21
Re phone as audiobook player:
Unless you are wedded to the i-world, you will have more flexibility w android. If you aren't familiar w smartphones, you might want to choose between android and iphone based on what family/friends use, since they can answer questions.
If your audiobooks are all from audible, it makes little diff choosing iphone vs android. If you also have mp3 and other format audiobooks, android will be easier to deal with - drag and drop files, experiment w players, etc. For an idevice, you're prob stuck with itunes (ugh) file xfers, tho i have managed to use bookmobile player in the past. Still bit of a pain, i dont use idevices for non-audible audiobooks anymore.
As far as devices, if you dont intend to activate cell service, just search on slickdeals or similar for sub $100 or sub $50 phone models. For that, ebay is fine as long as you get a high volume electronics seller with 99%+ recent positive feedback - look for an ebay phone deal recommended on a deal site like dealnews or slickdeals. Or swappa can be trusted. Or one of the best buy, frys, staples, etc special deals, they come up several times a month. Or a friend's old phone. Try for less than 3 years old, decent model, and only load apps you will use as too many slow the device. If the phone takes a microsd card, thats lots more storage.
If you intend to use phone as phone + player + everything else, ask family and friends, try stuff out in store, there are endless options. Iphones will offer fewer great deals than android. More important to have a recent model phone if you use it for phone + everything.
Then find a bluetooth headset you love and start listening. As mentioned, i like the LG tone series, but you have to be careful purchasing, as there are a billion knockoffs not close to as good. Newegg seems to have these at great prices, but check that they're made by LG even on newegg. (If the product title says "for LG", or "for" followed by a list of phone models, those are all knockoffs.). Also sometimes see deals at amazon, staples, frys, best buy.
For the LG headsets, good deals come up on slickdeals several times a month. The crowd will tell you if its genuine or knockoff.
@f00l Ooh, thanks for your novel! :)
I've got an Android phone anyway, so I'm definitely looking for a non idevice.
Thanks for all the tips!
There's also https://www.bookbub.com/home/ for both free and cheap ebooks from a variety of sites and in a variety of formats. You can choose what topics interest you from a few dozen categories; you'll get an email daily with their current bargains.
Sure, it's an advertising gimmick for publishers and/or authors, but the end result is an email of stuff that I'm likely going to find of interest. I particularly like it for keeping my costs down on collections or series by a given author. I made the mistake a while back of checking out a character named Stephanie Plum, only to discover there were (at that time) 21 seriously addictive books in the series. I was able to find about half of them for free or for $2 or so.
There's also http://bookgorilla.com/ which works pretty much like bookbub.
One caveat about many of the public domain free books: many of them have been scanned by volunteers and put into a book format, resulting in many barely readable copies due to failure of the scanner format to make a good transition to whatever the book-formatting device uses. (I'm pretty sure the Gutenberg Project's offerings do not have these problems.)
@magic_cave I haven't come across any problems with the ebooks that I linked above, although I've only read a couple of them in that format. So far they've been good editions. I'll have to check out bookbub sometime.
I just moved, but I think my local library uses Overdrive, so that's another good option as well.
@magic_cave I Love bookbub, though there are alot of repeats in the email. thanks for the info about book gorilla!
@magic_cave Oh and I have weird feelings about paying real money for something that's digital only
@Foxborn So do I, but then I realized that I pay real money when The Spouse and I go out to a movie. What really frosts me, though, is to see a Kindle price of $10.99 and a hardback price of $11.99.
@magic_cave I'll occasionally spring for up to about $2 on something that looks extra good but usually not
Here are all 15 Oz books for 99 cents
