The release date for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has finally been announced and as I’ve been preregistered for what feels like forever, I felt the need to share my excitement with you all!
My main fandom is Buffy. My daughter and I just started a re-watch of the series (but ugh, season 1). Still waiting for the reboot to materialize, but I even made a shirt to combine my love of BtVS and Beer.
I’ve been binge-watching Sneaky Pete so I guess it’s my present favorite. I hesitate to go full-blown fandom though. But Better Call Saul makes me swoon.
@therealjrn We’re working our way through Burn Notice, we love Bosch, and are also enjoying Corner Gas and Jack Ryan on Amazon.
We were religious watchers of The Walking Dead, although not so much Fear The Walking Dead, but burned out after the second season with Negan, and stopped following it.
There are so many with all the streaming services, but my LONGEST standing is Rocky!!!
Love me some Balboa. It was the first movie I remember seeing @ ~2-3 years old and we saw it at the drive in. I remember laying on the hood of the car in awe of Sly. My mom and dad had to get me a poster for my room.
@duodec Wait are you asking to be invited to a fandom because you don’t have one!? I’ve got a few: Firefly, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Black Mirror. Also, the upcoming and hopefully well done “Wheel of Time” show (great book series if you are a reader) with some information found here: https://www.denofgeek.com/us/tv/wheel-of-time/263967/wheel-of-time-amazon-cast
@Targaryen Oh no, but thank you. I am a daily fan of many things, just those two were my best and longest term ones because they started when I was younger and lasted quite a long time, both ruined (IMO) by latecomer opportunists.
John Ringo and David Weber books, and so many other authors. I’d love to see the “To Sail a Darkling Sea” zombie stories, or some of the Honor Harrington books made into movies (without being ruined). I reread my E.E. Smith Lensman and Skylark series books every few years, still pull out Niven, Heinlein and Pournelle for regular re-reads. And never forget Tolkein…
Firefly/Serenity, already a still aggrieved fan. Space, Above and Beyond, the wound of its mishandling and cancellation hurts just as much.
I try not to be a fan of games that don’t run on Mac or IOS. Microsoft products are not allowed in our household by mutual assent (we both are forced to use and support their products at work, which led to the decision; decidedly NOT fans, though it limits our gaming choices). Currently having a blast with World of Tanks Blitz (the full game doesn’t support Mac).
Never read the Wheel of Time books. We have the first two and they are on the someday pile.
@duodec Fair enough. I haven’t gotten into Ringo yet still working through Weber’s list of books but he’s on my list. I’d also very much enjoy Honor’s stuff on the screen but I’d like a tv show or something. Battlestar Galactica shows you can have a fleet/combat/gritty type of sci-fi tv show and have it work well.
Have you read John Scalzi? He might be up your alley then, try the Old Man’s War series.
Well Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm definitely work on Macs but I’m on the other end from you guys. I like my PCs.
@Targaryen I would also love to see Weber’s Dahak series (Mutineer’s Moon, etc) made into good movies.
Some of Ringo is an acquired taste. Be certain before diving into the Paladin of Shadows series particularly. But the first few books of the Posleen War series were a blast.
Black Tide Rising (the series name for the zombie books) was just fun. In a horrible way, but having a (strong) young girl become the numero uno melee zombie killer was a blast. The series is still expanding, some of the fun has left the building with an increase in philosophical and ethical questions, but its still enjoyable.
I read and loved Old Man’s War years ago. Scalzi has also kind of left the building; I read his ‘reimagine’ of H Beam Piper’s Fuzzy story and found it rather lacking. But maybe its because I loved Piper’s universe so much since I was a kid, and wanted his Pappy Jack Holloway to by my uncle or grandpa, and Scalzi’s was kind of a bum.
I played Robocraft on Steam for quite a while but their last updates broke proper screen handling on my Macbook Pro.
World of Tanks Blitz is just a blast; the only problem is solo players (random teaming) like me due to my stupid schedule, keep getting teamed up against preformed platoons who privately communicate and cooperate and kick the snot out of us, unless we manage to hang together. I try, but mostly telling a bunch of people 'lets stick together, which direction should we go?" gets a bunch of juvenile responses and everyone scatters to get taken out piecemeal.
I have and like Civ V, but every time I play it I get sucked in until 3AM or so when I fall asleep, then dead the next day. WOT Blitz (and robocraft) at least has discrete matches that its easy to break off between. Also enjoyed Armello (sp?) though again, a longer game run can keep me up way too late. So we’re doing OK on the Mac gaming front.
I do wish the complete World of Tanks was on the Mac also though. Much more complete game, much larger maps, more players, etc.
@duodec I’m a sucker for zombie related media so I’m going to check out that Black Tide Rising. You should try reading the Newsflesh series by Mira Grant. It adds a bit to the zombie genre without being “another zombie book.”
I’ll check out Robocraft as well. It sounds like something I would definitely try. I play WoT occasionally as well, I don’t play enough to have any good tanks, I play mostly lights and zip around watching my shots bounce off armor. Well at least there are some games that work which is nice. You can also bootcamp your Mac and run windows to have better access to games… but I’m guessing you don’t want that option.
@duodec@Targaryen Agree with all except your espousement of the “evil” empire of Apple/Mac.
We are more Linux/Chrome/Firefox and Android than Windows fan, but we really started with MS-DOS, and despite not being big fans of Windows, never went the Apple/Mac route.
We love the Black Tide Rising/Darkling Sky series, as well as Serenity/Firefly, and the above noted Z-related media, and Tolkein.
Speaking of Tolkein, has anyone seen the “Tolkein Edit” of the Hobbit movie yet?
@PhysAssist@Targaryen Been an Apple user since 1981 and probably could have been called a fanboy until maybe mid 2000s. I’m under no illusions about the company now. But it is still the lesser of three (counting MS and google) evils and I have marginally more trust in their support for user privacy than the other two.
Microsoft is the great evil of the computer industry IMO, based on decades of being required to use, support, and clean up after their wretched products. Google is catching up. Apple is trying but is an also-ran.
@Targaryen I played a lot of Robocraft until they broke it. I had lifetime premium and all the special components up to the point they expanded the parts collection (same time they broke the Mac interface). It has changed a lot over time.
My intro Robocraft was a kickstarter for Megabots building a new mech/robot for a battle with a Japanese mech; one of the perks was a code for a pre-built robot in Robocraft that provided a modest boost because it got you some more advanced weapons and track systems, or you could just play the bot as it came. That is what got me into the game.
So…what is the learning curve on this type of game? How addicting? I really don’t need something else to occupy my time but maybe it would be fun? Can you play for a few minutes or do you need more time to invest? Any other general information I should be thinking about or am I overthinking this?
I never tried Pokemon Go. I considered it but it seemed like I would need someone to walk me through and explain stuff. I know very little about the Pokemon card game and other related stuff.
I have read the Harry Potter books and watched the movies except for the two Fantastic Beasts ones. I am guessing it helps to know some of the story and character references.
I am not a frequent gamer. I played alot of Pong, Tetris, Mario and Zelda way back when. Simple strategy games now if I play anything.
@speediedelivery you will be leveled up according to the time you invest. you will want to have someone explain it to you, so join a discord group in your area, or some other means of answering/asking questions. there is also an element of cooperation that helps you “do stuff” in this game.
@Yoda_Daenerys I downloaded the game and have been experimenting with it. I am not totally obsessed but it is interesting so far. A few things I do not like but not enough to quit yet.
@speediedelivery Pokemon Go requires even less figuring out than this game. It’s simple catching and collecting. Harry Potter has a smaller library of things to catch, but much more to figure out and learn and keep track of. We’re enjoying it, even though I’m concerned we will burn out faster with it because of the small library of things to free. But hey, gets us out for walks around the neighborhood at night.
@sammydog01 no idea. I’ve played maybe ten minutes and already leveled up once and I still don’t really know what the point is yet. I know you battle and collect stuff just like PG.
@RiotDemon I sent you a request. I think I’m getting it down, made it to level 7. I hate having to go find energy. Where I’m at there is tons of magic to catch, but no inns. I wish the energy would replenish by itself like at least a little every few minutes. Pogo is easier in that area, with the tons of balls you can carry.
@remo28 that’s what’s annoying me right now as well. I was absolutely bombarded by stuff to pick up and I was getting two energy things from the inns. Bah.
@remo28@RiotDemon I spent several hours at a concert tonight. There’s a Pokestop there so I could play as much Pokemon Go as I wanted. The Pokestop is a greenhouse in the Wizard game so I ran out of lightning bolt things. It was extremely annoying.
@RiotDemon Sure, I could, but the world of Harry Potter has already clearly established its location with respect to where we are, and we’re not in it.
@Limewater that’s a (the?) theme in the game, stuff has come out into the muggle world and we all have to help get it back so the muggles don’t discover us.
@speediedelivery sorry, I removed it from my phone. Got busy for a week and found I kept popping into Pokemon to do the daily min but never bothered to start Potter.
I sent the new gifts to all the posted numbers above. I am playing way too much and have extra. I recieved a gift but I didn’t see a notice. Posting here as a heads up to check your friend list. No need to return gifts.
Another event with adding friends. Also has gift giving requirements. My code is
7502 9981 1203 Any current friends that want to delete me and add back works too.
I read your name as Levio-please as if it’s a new charm.
@cinoclav Oh, it is when you say it right.
@cinoclav I added an extra long oooohhhhh in the middle.
My main fandom is Buffy. My daughter and I just started a re-watch of the series (but ugh, season 1). Still waiting for the reboot to materialize, but I even made a shirt to combine my love of BtVS and Beer.
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/slayer-summer-blonde
@ACraigL I’m not a fan of beer, but I love the shirt!
Godzilla and friends. The new movie was great but I miss the rubber suits. The first online bulletin board I lurked at was called Stomp Tokyo.
@sammydog01 I saw the new Godzilla at an old school drive in. It was definitely great! Even while fighting off mosquitos the size of Mothra.
@LeviOhPlz Mothra is my daughter’s Pokemon Go user name. I’m proud of my little geek.
@sammydog01 Yes! A true parenting win!
@sammydog01 Crush Crumble and Chomp…
Aw, I was ready for a movie. I guess I can play this too. How else is on board?
/giphy so excited
I’ve been binge-watching Sneaky Pete so I guess it’s my present favorite. I hesitate to go full-blown fandom though. But Better Call Saul makes me swoon.
@therealjrn We’re working our way through Burn Notice, we love Bosch, and are also enjoying Corner Gas and Jack Ryan on Amazon.
We were religious watchers of The Walking Dead, although not so much Fear The Walking Dead, but burned out after the second season with Negan, and stopped following it.
Oh, I almost forgot about Archer and Battlebots.
I’d say this but I do love me some Harry Potter.
@cinoclav ???
@tinamarie1974 You need to up your nerd game.
@cinoclav oh I know what the rebel alliance is…earlier it was a broken link. Nothing was there.
And I dressed as Princes Leia all the time as a kid
@tinamarie1974 You had me worried there. Umm, do you still have a Leia outfit? Maybe?
@cinoclav haha. I am pretty well rounded. Sadily, that is not one of the costumes in my closet. I think it is pretty easy to find though!
@cinoclav Hey, hey, hey don’t flash that just anywhere you’re gonna call @cythwulf by mistake.
@cinoclav @Targaryen
Too late. I came, I saw, I added a like.
@cinoclav @Cythwulf @Targaryen likes are good
Liked the books better than the movies. Liked Richard Harris Dumbledore better than Gambon (though I like Michael Gambon; hope he is doing ok).
I wonder if the pokemon gyms will ease up around here after WU opens…
I’m not actually sure what I’m a primary fan of anymore. Star Trek and Star Wars have both disappointed with their reboots and re-imaginings.
@duodec Wait are you asking to be invited to a fandom because you don’t have one!? I’ve got a few: Firefly, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Black Mirror. If so, was it worth the long download?
@duodec @Targaryen Of course the IOS comments were both tongue in cheek, and directed towards @DuoDec, not @Targaryen.
@PhysAssist @Targaryen Been an Apple user since 1981 and probably could have been called a fanboy until maybe mid 2000s. I’m under no illusions about the company now. In my youth, Star Trek
In my old age, I don’t really care.
In case you haven’t seen yet, the app is available now.
Android
Apple
@Cythwulf I just loaded it. I guess I should go walk around or something.
So…what is the learning curve on this type of game? How addicting? I really don’t need something else to occupy my time but maybe it would be fun? Can you play for a few minutes or do you need more time to invest? Any other general information I should be thinking about or am I overthinking this?

I am not a frequent gamer. I played alot of Pong, Tetris, Mario and Zelda way back when. Simple strategy games now if I play anything.
@speediedelivery it’s simple. These types of games encourage you to go outside. You have to interact at places on the map to do the quests.
Pokemon Go has you collect items and capture Pokemon. It’s easy.
This game uses the same mapping technology. Haven’t really got into it much so I’m not sure if I like it yet.
@speediedelivery you will be leveled up according to the time you invest. you will want to have someone explain it to you, so join a discord group in your area, or some other means of answering/asking questions. there is also an element of cooperation that helps you “do stuff” in this game.

I guess if I decide to do Pokemon Go things, this will be useful at the same places.
@RiotDemon I sent an invitation. I don’t know what friends do yet.
@sammydog01 no idea. I’ve played maybe ten minutes and already leveled up once and I still don’t really know what the point is yet. I know you battle and collect stuff just like PG.

Outside? You mean where the bugs, heat and people are?
@therealjrn and wizards and trolls now.
App does not support split screen. Ugh! Whyyyy
@RiotDemon you’re trying to play pokemon go and Wizaeds Unite simultaneously, mee thinks
I am not a wizard. Some dumb app isn’t going to change that.
@Limewater but you can pretend!
@Yoda_Daenerys But we’re muggles.
@Limewater @Yoda_Daenerys It is working
Anyone still playing? Looking for a friend for the event.
@speediedelivery Not really but I’ll check in and accept friend requests from people I know. Maybe they’ll suck me back in.

@speediedelivery Dont generally care either. Energy or runestones i suppose
removed it from my phone this past weekend. I had not played since September and didn’t miss it. Still loafing around in pokemon a bit…
