@G1 Virtual Machine = VM. Running a computer (or more likely running MANY computers) on a single computer. Why? More efficient use of hardware, run different operating systems, possibly cheaper & easier to manage than many physical computers.
VMware Workstation is the version that runs on Windows, Fusion is for Macs.
The rabbit hole goes pretty deep, but that’s a start.
It’s a trap, man! They want you developer types to keep making VMWare VM’s, so us SysOps folks need overpriced VSphere servers to run them in production.
F that, use KVM via QEMU/libvert for local or oVirt (tbf I haven’t used OV myself).
Not as idiot proof to get started but the choices won’t come back to bite you because someone’s profit margins didn’t exponentiate enough this quarter.
Using “free” VMware or other corporation “backed” (dependent) software packages is like bending over a barrel and pulling down your pants. Even if nothing has happened yet but you know what’s coming.
The only reason they even did this is because their proprietary trash has to compete with VB which is at least “open source” (except where it isn’t). Use and support FOSS for low level stuff like this, only pay for proprietary for niche solutions with few users.
OK, explain it like I’m a five year old with genius hacker tendencies:
What is VMware Workstation and Fusion?
I’ve at least heard of Workstation…

Well, at least they are doing some good with the money they saved by laying me and so many of my colleagues off.
@blandoon
Ty
wasn’t vmware free all the time? do you mean the licensed versions that businesses use or wha?
