@ruouttaurmind Tempting deal. $20 on amazon. After looking at reviews, on both sites, my biggest concern is adding ice and cleaning it (w/o a bottle brush) - that neck/opening is quite small. The other thing that got mentioned is that this bottles exterior scratches very easily. Mine would probably look like shit after a week of use.
I think I will leave this one to the soccer moms.

@mfladd @ruouttaurmind I’m a fan of a weathered look on some things sometimes. My thermos coffee mug is a great example of that. While I admit that it looks better on some things than others, I think drink containers can benefit from a bit of character setting them apart from the crowd every once in a while.

Right now I’m into hydro-flask and its imitators, and into the Rtic/Yeti style mugs. I like the lid on the Rtics much better than the lid on the Yetis.

The Rtic biggest sizes are under $15 at Buc-ee’s, if you happen to be near a Buc-ee’s.

And they are wonderful. (both the Rtic mugs and Buc-ee’s).

@ruouttaurmind @sammydog01 Yeah, being mostly anti-cool it’s a hard pass. These also don’t hold a lot of water. I am having to deal with the whole cool product factor right now with my daughter. It irks me, but I get it with her age.
I have caved to a couple a presents, such as a Simply Southern t-shirt (ugly), and Adidas running pants (when the hell did Adidas leave the 2nd rate category?). But then she will often have to listen to fatherly speeches about not following sheep, and independent thought. Girls!
My son could care less what is cool, and wears whatever he likes.
It’s interesting how they evolve and grow.

I have one Buc-ee’s logo Rtic 20 oz and several Ric 40’s. All purchased at Buc-ee’s at various times.

You can get get “cup holder size converters”. Search eBay or Amazon.
Then no prob with those 40’s.

The Buc-ee’s near Temple, Tx gets overwhelmed. It’s too small for the very heavy I35 traffic, and it seems that 2/3 of the passenger vehicles on that highway wanna stop there. (Exacerbated by road construction around Temple).

I won’t exit to that location anymore during known busy times. It just takes too long to get a pump. And even the huge restrooms can have lines then.

Buc-ee’s is planning to alleviate this by opening more I35 locations. I guess they have expanded the Temple store to the capacity of the location.

Bucc-ee’s allows no 18 wheelers on site. It would complicate the already fairly busy parking area and perhaps change the highly “family friendly” feeling.

Right now a Buc-ee’s visit is special delight for children. They do “tune” the stores to kide to a degree.

Re Buc-ee’s.

They started as normal convenience stores with excellent restrooms and cheap good ice cream. There are plenty of suburban locations with, say, 10 pumps or so, and a normal gas station atmosphere, with some extra outdoor sporting equipment related to the area nearby

(On the coast, fishing and crabbing; near rivers, tubing, and etc).

And then they got the idea of the larger stores. Often an hour or so outside a major city. The first and/or last stop on a trip. The kids beg and pester to go there. So do the adults.

Here is the one on I10 in Baytown, TX, east of Houston, on the way to NO.

@f00l I think that is the one you directed me to on my way from her to MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston). Is this one off of 10 between Louisiana and Houston? I saw mostly rubbernecking and laugh at it stuff, a mountain of junk food - huge mountain - but a couple of interesting things. I didn’t try their ice cream as I had no money to eat out, but perhaps another year.

C-store these are.
Almost all the sales are for gas, drinks, and grab-and-go food.

The food is decent by c-store standards. Not by restaurant standards. I wish they would up the quality of their food some.

The brisket and cookies and umpteen flavors of jerky and fudge and are v good. They make their own.

The Reubens are said to be good. Have not tried one yet.

Mostly they’re just fun. People like to be there. Great place to wander around and stretch your legs.

CS always excellent. They post their starting wages on signs, kinda as a challenge to the competition. Employee turnover is low.

I think the early small stores sold soft-serve ice cream, but I’ve never seen that offered in any of the stores I’ve been in. So maybe they gave up producing their own ice cream and went in other directions. I don’t think I’ve cream is a “Buc-ee’s thing” at the moment.

You’re right about 1/3 if the big location floorspace being kitsch. But it’s the kind of kitsch that’s fun to look at.

They sell one brand of flip-flops that has beer-bottle openers on the bottom of the soles. I love the idea of those.

People just like to stop there, get gas and something to eat or drink, and walk around. You can see people waiting for pumps at Buc-ee’s sometimes (esp at the too-small Temple location), while nearby service stations are empty. People just like the atmosphere (and cleanliness) of Buc-ee’s.

@ruouttaurmind Thank you god I am no longer a soccer mom with a kid on a traveling team, but when I lived in northern Idaho we generally didn’t need anything cool and we stayed warm shoveling snow off the soccer fields. I also looked decidedly uncool sitting in my folding chair with 2 golf sized umbrellas - one over my legs and one over my head while all the cool moms were standing in the sleet or rain and were clearly secretly envious. I noticed that before the end of the first season we were there there were many more moms who copied my approach. When I lived in southern Oklahoma those same umbrellas were needed to create shade.

@sammydog01 I use it on a lot of things. Since my congestive heart failure (sounds worse than it is) I avoid salt big time. I like it on eggs, chicken, beef stir fry, oven baked tater wedges, on and on. If I ate more vegetables, I would use it there too. It’s good stuff, Maynard.

@ruouttaurmind I really just kind of glanced at them but I think they have a bit of packaging around them that adds some bulk. I’d imagine at least without the packaging you could get 4 in an empty Impala but the truck would be easier. Without packaging they seemed to fold pretty flat.

I know I’m planning on picking up one in a compact car.

@ruouttaurmind yeah, I want the 375lb version and not the 250lb version or I’d have jumped on it when I saw the others in person. I’m keeping an eye on brickseek for the other store to drop the price, maybe I’ll get lucky.

I just unloaded my platforms into the garage and took my first opportunity to check them out. First impression? Might be the best $20 purchase I’ve made in years. Super sturdy. A bit taller and just a hair wider than I imagined (a good thing) and the linking feature is terrific. I give it 4.5 stars (- .5 star because they didn’t unload themselves into the garage).

If there are any left in stores near you at the $20 price… maybe even worth a 45 min. drive to pick up a couple.

Oh, and PS: my Impala never ceases to impress me. 27mpg city, 34 hwy, spacious seating and leg room for four husky adults (6 on short trips), V6 power and a trunk I can live in if things go sideways.

@mfladd Nah, I messed with Elder Scrolls Online (via Xbox Gamepass). I wasn’t impressed with that one much. My exes son was a huge fan of Skyrim and watching him play, it did look loads better than Online, and one of the big reasons I wanted PSVR setup. Skyrim VR is supposed to be spectacular. Giant map and awesome, lush environment.

@mfladd R U into platformers at all? The first game I purchased when I inherited this Xbox was Rise of the Tomb Raider. I was a huge Tomb Raider player on the original PS all those years ago, so I thought I’d give this one a shot. Not bad.

I also have Far Cry 4, but have only installed it, no play yet. And I still have a sealed copy of COD WWII I received as a holiday gift this year. I know I’m not going to do well, and I’ve been ignoring the game, putting off the inevitable disappointment.

Kinda wanna try PUBG, and I think now it’s down to about $15 if you catch a sale.

@mfladd the warranty is for people that scratch their disks. Nowadays you download most games so what’s the point? I don’t really know.

Advice… Take your time with your character creation. Unless you’re someone that skips all the side quests and plows through the main quest, you’ll be looking at that face for a while.

FYI… when you meet a follower, they are whatever level you are. So if you meet them when you are a level 10 they will never get higher than a level 10. So don’t get too too attached to a follower unless you pick them up when you’ve been playing for a long time. You’ll meet Lydia soon enough. You’ll want to murder her soon. She’s a cunt.

Lots of weird stuff (which is the most fun thing about looking at clearance stuff) but some really good deals, too. You just have to take the time to look.

I did end up scoring the work platforms by the way. Watched the other store near me go from 3 to 1 on hand, so I went and checked after work. They actually had 2, once I found them. It wasn’t $20 each but I do actually have a need for them so I’m glad I found them.

Also, they barely fit in my car - the only place for them was in the passenger seat and floorboard, and it was a tight fit.

One of my rentals that my loving daughter is currently occupying has a similar range with a convection oven but the right half of the cooktop is dead. I offered to get her a new range, but she didn’t want to lose the convection oven. This would have been perfect, so cheap, cheap cheap. THANKS LOWES!

@therealjrn It needs 3 new burners (could use 4), 2 new cooktop thermal control switches, 2 burner receptacles, a 240v relay and a bit of rewiring.

That’s just the cooktop. The oven needs a new heating element and selector switch, possibly a ‘stat. Won’t know unless I replace the burner.

I’d have close to $200 into parts. And even then it would still be an ugly, chipped up, bisque color POS.

@therealjrn If it’s an analog controlled cooktop, I would suspect a wiring issue. Possibly a power feed jumper has a bad crimped connection, or/and has burned through. Or a relay if it’s so equipped. If it’s a digital cooktop controller… Prolly means the selector or controller circuit board is failed.

@therealjrn I have a convection oven and have never used the convection settings. Am I missing out?

@mfladd Maybe…it depends. Convection is forced hot air so baked goods seem to rise and brown better. I’ve found convection cooking to be a little faster as well. When I get a “regular” recipe, I’ll usually back off the temp by at least 25 degrees, if not 50, and keep a little close eye on the item because the times tend to be shorter. When I used to cook professionally, I preferred convection ovens because you can get your stuff cooked more quickly.

Getcha a pizza or something you’re used to and try it out convection style!

@mfladd Yep. Try it. My oven automatically lowers the temp 25°F from what I set when I do convection so I can just do it without thinking. Start checking for doneness in 60-80% of the time you would normally cook for (80% on short things like cookies, 60-70% on big, long-cooking things like roasts or turkeys). Or use a leave in thermometer if you’ve got one and it’s appropriate.

Convection is great for roasting, cooking casseroles, frozen stuff or pizzas, even cookies because they cook faster. I haven’t used it much for baking things like cakes or bread because when we moved here and I read up on it I read somewhere not to use it for that. Something about how those kinds of items needed the time for moisture to cook out properly and slowly enough (maybe?). But that could be wrong. I’ve just not tried; I don’t bake much anyway.

I wonder how well convection works for frozen fries and tots? Seems like it’s about the same concept as the air fryers which are all the rage right now.

@djslack @ruouttaurmind I dislike baked frozen French fries so I can’t tell you but I lovelovelove crispy tater tots and can assure you convection cooking is perfect for them. Fresh potato wedges come out nicely crisped and moist on the inside with convection cooking.

I’ve never been a baker but my yeast dinner rolls came out wonderfully risen (rose? raised?) and brown in a convection oven.

It kind of makes sense to me that some moist baked goods might not be well served by all that hot dry air though.

I really would have preferred a white stove, but as you say, for the price… what could I do?? I don’t use the dishwasher for anything more than a dish drainer because it’s SO LOUD I can’t hear myself think when it’s running. I haven’t actually turned it on for close to 20 years. I would like to replace it, but it would have to be one of those super-quiet models like the 38dBA, $1,000 Bosch. I don’t dislike hand washing dishes a thousand bucks worth.

Ha! Despite calling Lowe’s yesterday to reschedule my deliver day, I just got off the phone with the delivery driver who’s sitting in front of my house with my stove.

I was conflicted on this decision, but I told him to go ahead and leave it at the front door. I don’t worry that anyone will come steal my stove, but rather if there is any handling damage to the stove.

Just now finished installing the new stove. Took about twice as long as I anticipated. The most time consuming bit was pulling off all the adhesive protective plastic sheeting from every freakin square inch of the thing. Getting it squared and leveled was a bit of an effort as well. But I’m a little OCD about stuff like that and I wouldn’t quit until it was perfect in all axis.

I was looking forward to taking it on it’s maiden voyage, but I’m too spent to cook anything.

It’s all good though; long weekend starting Thursday afternoon, so plenty of time.

Don’t regret one penny of the ~$800 uber-quiet dishwasher (SS interior too) we got a few years back. You will not believe how you put up with the racket from the old one. Worth it to sleep right through the delay wash kicking off at 1am.

@ruouttaurmind Since getting the XboxOne, I haven’t used a headset much at all. the Xbox360 was tricky about independently controlling chat vs game volume. If I plug a standard headset like that into the XBoxOne game controller, will I get both chat and game sound? I would suspect only chat sound…

@medz You get both chat and game sound. The downside: You have to mix levels in the audio settings on the Xbox. Same to mute. The Microsoft headset adapter provides push button access to those settings.

@ruouttaurmind Got the printer today. The product box wasn’t inside a shipping box, so it was beat to shit. It also had “REFUSE” written all over it. I wonder if the previous buyer received it all beat-up and refused delivery. Inside the box, however, I had the user manual and cables. It even had the blue tape on it that keeps the doors and flaps secure. Inside the printer was a starter toner cartridge that was also still taped secure for shipping. I won’t know whether to curse you until I set it up and try it.
