I got one for a similar price, may be $5 more, at a local walmart. It was an impulse buy, and I didn’t get around to installing it until March. I love it. I have the Home Mini to my brother because I’ve got Echoes and I knew I wouldn’t remember who I was talking to.

I do not have a C wire, but the Nest E works fine. Initially it told me to reseat my red wire, which I did, and I’ve had no problems since.

I finally disabled the auto schedule thing, because I don’t have a regular enough schedule when I’m home for it to be practical. The important (to me, anyway) traditional scheduling bit is when I’m home or away, and the Nest E knows that because of geofencing. When it was really hot this summer I told it i was home through the app before I got home so it could turn down the AC.

I also like being able to turn on the fan without having to remember to turn it off.

The E is more limited in the systems it works with, but you can check their site to be sure.

@craigthom I recently replaced my Honeywell 9XXX stat with a Honeywell Lyric Round, which is very similar to the Nest E. I loved my 9XXX, but the Lyric is just ok. I’m considering changing it out for this deal. I’m still researching the features and system support. Don’t want to change spend money for “different” without getting “better”.

The Nest Web site makes it easy to see if your system will work. I think it’s most when there are multiple devices that the regular nest is needed.

@reg036 Both items are packaged into a single box, but each within their own box. Seems easy enough to split up the ‘stat from the Home Mini. Maybe gift or flip each item separately.

But… it’s likely there has been thousands of these purchased around the country, and probably most resales venues will be flooded with this stuff for a while, affecting the selling price. I guess it depends on how much effort you’re willing to put in and what kind of return you would find acceptable?

@mfladd Two things: Remember, before you drive far, Brickseek is NOT always 100 accurate in stock and price status. Also, some buyers reported in some stores the items are not stocked anywhere on the retail sales floor. They had someone in the electronics department look up the SKU, and the items had to be retrieved from stock.

All of a sudden they popped up at my local store @ $79. After checking where I was told to look and them not being there, I had the clerk check the sku and he said they had been deleted so they were probably out. I asked him if he would be so kind just to check in the back. He agreed - and joyous days - he walked out with one. I said, THANK YOU!

The associate said it is not really a matter of select stores as brickseek says - it’s more a matter of when each of the wal-marts get to doing the clearance of the items.

I tried to find them near me, but no soap. My Honeywell Lyric Round is functioning as designed, but it just leaves me a little flat, totally hiding configurable options behind a “contractor or service technician” menu which is only accessible from the physical device and not within the app. To further convolute settings, nothing is referenced by function name, but rather with a “function code”, so you have to have the service manual in front of you to cross ref codes in order to make any system settings changes.

Agreed. The only advantage of BS is to quickly discern price and stock status on the same page. At Lowe’s website they’ll show stock, then you have to “shop” that location on the site to see price. In my area there are stores with stock, but original $15 price.

I don’t believe the tip about the plastic bag, since this is the same housing they use for the sensors with the humidity sensor.

Direct sunlight will give you false high readings, so keep it in the shade. And it wouldn’t hurt to keep it out of rain, although I’m not convinced that’s necessary.

@RiotDemon I think that’s all you need to do. I also don’t like the bag idea because it restricts air flow.

I’ve got my sensor like it, but with humidity, inside a louvered shield, which gives it air flow but protects it from direct light. I don’t recommend that for people just getting an outdoor temperature sensor like this one. It would be a bit much.

At least this has been my experience at my Lowes, with 3 of the recent Lowes deals posted here.

The bad news is that I did not find the Nest/Google deal. The Brickseek total (2) was correct, as that is what they were showing on their inventory. But they sold one this a.m. and the other was M.I.A. - and yes the checked in the back

P.S. Not that I’m getting on your case or anything but technically it’s only 1 manufacturer coupon per item, that said if your store doesn’t care and/or the second coupon was store coupon then all’s good but others might have issues duplicating the deal.

@reg036 the cashier rang it up, so I wasn’t going to question them on it. I think the $3 off Q is specific to Petco, as they advertised that price ($17) on the shelf tag. The $1 off was just a loose, anytime pamphlet probably left by another customer or the distributor stocking the shelves.

@reg036 I posted because we’re particular about our litter and Dr. Elsey’s never goes on sale anymore for $12-13 a bag. Also particular about Call of the Wild (venison) for our cats for about a year now. We tried Origin, but the cats think it is crack. Before that, Blue. All of which rarely go on sale or have coupons.

@sammydog01 On the serious side… Don’t have a sous vide machine myself but make sure they are vacuum sealed well and temp them after the recommended time then sear them off. I get my vacuum bags in rolls off of eBay, so much cheaper and of great quality.

@sammydog01 131 F, don’t overcook. I like ribeyes with just salt and pepper, patted dry and then sears in a cast iron skillet as hot as I can get it. Pan sauce with cognac or bourbon, liquid from bag, and cream (not milk, not half and half; they will burn), seasoned to taste (lots of pepper), reduced until it does the finger on the back of the spoon thing.

I have to make sure I get them lined up correctly in the Food Saver, but, once I do, they’ve all sealed, and none have leaked.

The Food Saver I was using at the time didn’t have a cutter, and I am crappy at cutting them straight, so I bought the bags.

I did buy about a metric fuck-ton of brand name bags when I got my sealer- doesn’t the machine suck juice up into it if the meat isn’t frozen? I pre-freeze meat before sealing it.

When I’m bagging chuck chunks (I cut it up) I also toss in a little dried porcini.

sammydog01 It make not be as important with an electric burner, but when I add the alcohol, I turn off the burner first, move the pan back, pour it in, close the bottle, then turn on the flame and burn off the alcohol. Because I like fire. You could use a fireplace lighter or something. Just make sure there’s no flame when the bottle is open.

@craigthom @sammydog01 I buy a lot when it goes on sale and freeze it in the vac bags. Never thought to pre-freeze but my food saver has a liquid catch tray. The other week I got 21lbs of pork loin at $.99 a pound, had the store cut it up for me and sealed and froze it up at home.

@craigthom @reg036 @therealjrn @djslack The place I get steak usually has one cut that’s on sale if you buy a big slab of it. Today it was Porterhouse. I seasoned them with garlic powder and pepper and sealed the bags up. After reading a bunch of different instructions I cooked them at 133 for 1 hour. Then I finished them off on the grill. At least I tried to- the gas ran out. But they had some grill marks and it was close enough.

Everyone loved them. I’ll freeze up the extra ones and try it again some day. It’s a pretty cool way to cook. I plan on trying it on those pre-seasoned pork tenderloins and chicken. I always overcook meat so maybe it will be better.

No, the desire is that I want to automate everything I can in my lifestyle and run it with an app and store bytes and bytes of data that I COULD compare but never do.

@JnKL Not Bluetooth, but if you want a turnkey smart system it looks like Netatmo, with optional rain gauge, will do what you want for under $300. You could also get this from Acurite, on sale now for $160.

If you’ve got an old computer not doing anything, or already running Linux, you could run weeWX on it with the SDR driver and add a wireless rain gauge like this one. Or you could use a Raspberry Pi if you don’t have a spare computer.

You’ll also need a cheap radio receiver like this one and a few hours installing and configuring everything. This would save your all your rain numbers into a database for you to not use some day. It will also generate web pages you can FTP to a site somewhere.

I had to dip into my $89 “gift of prime” GCs that I got myself when they were on sale (maybe Prime Day after they went to $99?). I went 4 years with the $79 “Gift of Prime” stash I put away. Probably saved a free year of Prime. We get it for Prime Video, the shipping and credits are just lagniappe.

You just have to turn off auto-renew or cancel Prime a few days before it expires (so it won’t auto-renew). And then apply the GCs to redeem. You can’t apply them to an active prime account.

A “Gift of Prime” gift card is different than a regular Amazon gift card in that it is good for a year of prime and you can convert it to the price you paid, but not the other way around. You cant pay for Prime with a regular Amazon gift card.

@mike808 I used to watch more Prime Video, but I guess I must have been through most of what they have of interest to me because the last few months I haven’t watched it at all. I won’t exactly miss Prime Video when my membership expires in a few months. I will miss the ordering convenience, but definitely not $120 worth.

@reg036 The IR variety don’t work well through glass. If you can disable the IR function, they are ok, but obvs the nighttime illumination doesn’t happen then.

@reg036 @ruouttaurmind I’ve got a Wyze camera pointed out the window. It works pretty well during the day. Sometimes when the sun is shining on the window I get false triggers.

At night, IR turned off, porch light on, I can see the general area around the light, but I can also see the camera reflected in the window.

But I’m generally satisfied with the daytime video.

Once eBay figured out their screw up, they discontinued the offer. I called eBay CS and was told “too bad for you, you should have moved on it more quickly” and then was offered a $5 courtesy credit. I suppose if I had spent more time and aggravation on it I might have bullied them into honoring the full $25 value of the initial offer, but I didn’t bother.

I have routines set up and sometimes she ignores the routine and rather uses canned responses instead of following the steps of the routine. Annoying.

Plus, sometimes stuff works, and sometimes she says “I’m sorry but the device (device name here) doesn’t support that.” Well it just supported that two freakin’ hours ago, honey! WHAT CHANGED??

Finally, she’s not as bright as Siri when it comes to answering general knowledge inquiries. Alexa is good with movies, TV and music trivia, but not that great at anything else.
