@phendrick IYou need to be any kind of huge corporate outfit’s wage-slave, and your master gets to keep the profits. Telcos are not the only evil empire
@phendrick@werehatrack but the big-telco (“there can only be one”) was the original evil empire.
It’s not a co-incidence that the AT&T logo looks like the Death Star.
How can you say bad things about that little old lady Ma Bell? I actually was never too bothered by AT&T before their forced breakup. They essentially subsidized local service with their long-distance charges, and I VERY seldom ever needed to make a long-distance call. After that, my monthly local service cost more than doubled very quickly.
My worst opinion of them was after I saw the movie The President’s Analyst.
@phendrick@werehatrack Funny this led to The President’s Analyst. I’ve been craving that movie (maybe because everything 2020s is 1970s again?). It doesn’t seem to be available in an HD disc format except for other region imports. Still searching.
But on a related topic, Telefon was just released on a new Blu-Ray disc US edition a few weeks ago!
@pmarin@werehatrack Thought it was great when it came out, and watched it several times since then. Last was maybe 5-10 years ago. Seemed pretty dated that time, but still a pretty funny premise.
Think it was free then, but all seem to be for pay, now, even Az prime.
I’m assuming this is not a transformer, and is just a physical adapter. (Not stated in the specs.) In other words, don’t plug anything into it that runs only on 120 volts while in a 220 volt country! Also, for what it’s worth, 1 amp from the USB port is basically a trickle charger these days. That would take AGES to charge a smartphone.
My thoughts on this type of thing.
As @PooltoyWolf mentioned, it doesn’t change the voltage, it just makes your plug fit.
I find these to be bulky and take up too much valuable space.
I would get some small plug adapters just for whatever country you are going to. For example Western European countries all use the “two round pins” type (unless grounded, I.e. 3-prong, in that case it’s a bigger round thing)
If you travel a lot with a laptop, you can get power cords that go to the semi-universal 2- or 3-pin power brick input. Then just take that cord with you.
Some of the Apple chargers, and maybe other brands, had a swappable plug part. You can buy a set of these for other countries. I’ve even had some products come with several swappable pieces.
Many hotels and rental cars have USB charge ports. Newer ones will be USB-C especially in Europe.
For those of you saying it doesn’t change the voltage… it doesn’t say that in the specs. Therefore you can assume it does and if it doesn’t Meh will pay for any of your damaged electronics because lawyers. And you should definitely take my word for it because I’m a guy on the Internet. Why would I lie to you? Enjoy your vacation to the other side of the world… hope it helps you forget about those homeless people in your neighborhood!

I travel a lot and the only place you’ll ever need these is if you’re off the beaten path in some super small town other than that these are very very unnecessary plus the one I have that I’ve used gets to about 130°
@JGPollard
I have a similar when I’m taking to Europe for a month soon. The new ones have high power GaN outputs for a laptop and three other USB ports.

@pmarin @werehatrack Heh. Had never heard of that comparison before.

@phendrick @pmarin The highly unauthorized internal employee newsletter used to be called The Death Star.
@phendrick @pmarin And in The President’s Analyst, the ultimate BigBad was TPC.

Never trust a universal surge protector. It doesn’t know what universe to protect.
@hchavers A universal soldier of fortune.
Just cut the plug off whatever you need to power, strip the wires, and jam them in the socket, good enough.
So is meh just going to sell is the same crap they offered during the last mehathon?
@goldnectar Are you new here?
Is it cheaper now than during the mehrathon?
Looks like a different item than what was sold during the mehrathon:

If you were selling tjis 2 weeks ago, I would snap it up for a trip to spain
@WilhelmScreamer conversely, if they were selling a trip to Spain 2 weeks ago, I’d be in Spain now!

Once again, DST is a nuisance.
Somebody wake me when yesterday becomes tomorrow and yesterday’s Meh button registers for today…

I see we’ve entered the “the beatings will continue until morale improves“ sales experiment
Didn’t adjust for the time change, huh?
It’s like when I was a kid, and suddenly the Price is Right was NOT on at 10am like usual lol
… if anyone’s still hunting for today’s deal
Lol. Effing meh forgot to set their clocks forward!
I took these one of these with me when I went to the UK and it worked perfectly. I am glad I bought them.

Is it the same make? Do you have a model number? I hope you have a great trip.
@JGPollard
No, it’s some rando brand I got off of amazon, but I’ve used it a few times and it works well. Looking forward to taking it with me when we do a week-long river cruise since there are never enough outlets in European facilities!
