Towle Stainless has a terrible tendency to develop rust, etc. after one or two trips through the dishwasher, FWIW. (Basically, it’s crap flatware, very poorly made.) Maybe you could make it last a bit longer if you only hand-wash it, but, yeah, no way.
@cbl_wv The best stainless silverware I have is the stuff my dad stole when he was in the Marines. The stuff is really heavy and never bends or rusts. Not just stamped crap either. It’s like it went through a tumbler to knock off the edges. I like that most of the spoons have USMC or USN on the handle too. Touch of class.
@flehm@kevinrs When my kid was at home I’d find spoons in the yard, after one had been run over by the lawnmower, by the basketball hoop, in her room… anywhere but in the sink to be washed!
What luck. I needed a new set of silverware. My current spoons got gnarled up by taking a few rides in the garbage disposal. Now I’ll have backups if it happens again.
@RiotDemon I sure wish I had known about those things back when I had a kid at home and a garbage disposal. Never saw one before. The worst though is when a small enough glass, one made of glass, gets down in the garbage disposal and you didn’t see it…
@therealjrn I use mine regularly, and I wouldn’t want to live someplace where I had to scrape everything carefully into the trash, period. I think they’re UNDER-rated.
I stayed in a vacation rental last year that could really use this. There were three cheese knifes, some gizmo for sharpening (garden spades?) a ton of mostly broken wooden implements and a couple of utensils you could actually eat with - if you could find something to eat off.
Towle Silver used to be in the next town over from me in Newburyport, MA. They used to make excellent stuff. Then I think they moved everything to China. We still have silver sleigh bells and lots of other stuff made there. Wish I had a clue if this stuff retained any of the quality.
@IAMIS I have my grandmother’s silver silverware set made by them. It is absolutely beautiful. Too bad their stuff is not longer very good. I didn’t know they had gone downhill.
@IAMIS n 1990, Towle Silversmiths was acquired by the holding company Syratech Inc., that also owned Wallace Silversmiths and the International Silver Company In 2006, Lifetime Brands Inc. purchased Syratech Inc., thereby acquiring all three brands.
@avante296, more courses! If you do a 6 course meal for 5 people, and change the silverware each course, you will do fine! If by fine you mean, run out of clean eating utensils.
Nice “cutting remarks” story today. Enjoyed it.
As to the product, was thinking about a set for son who graduates next year, but the reviews here were very helpful. So no. Thanks Mehtizens!
WOW! I’m really impressed with what I got for my money. These are nice, solid, decent quality flatware, and a lot of it! I’m not going to run out of eating utensils any time soon. And I’m not going to have to wash something just so I can eat. These won’t bend at the slightest pressure and I expect to have them for a long time to come. And I even like the pattern. Thank you to Meh and Towle. I love it! Now to get rid of all that mis-matched, broken, bent and ugly silverware in my drawer!
My first test for silverware is to bend spoons, since my household loves ice cream, and we’ve seen a few get bent. The spoons in this set are a solid 6/10 for bending. Not the cheapo stuff, but it’s not as solid as I expected.
The pattern on my slotted swerving spoon is not the se as the picture. Not too big a deal, but worth mentioning.
Otherwise, great set, and I’m looking forward to getting rid of my mismatched stuff in lieu of these new ones.
@tangmofen@ybmuG Don’t forget about the garbage disposal test, the brought it out to the basketball hoop in the street and left it in the tall grass for the lawnmower test, and of course the backyard sandbox test while trying to dig a hole to China the middle of the Indian Ocean.

@cbl_wv not seeing that in the Amazon reviews. Would be reason to figure it’s not real stainless
@cbl_wv thanks for the heads up. I was contemplating these. I’ll save up a few more bucks for mikasa like Hannibal has

@cbl_wv @kevinrs It’s stainless, but 18/0 is the cheap stainless and more prone to corrosion. The better stainless is 18/10.
Our daily and fancy is a set of Mikasa we bought in 1988. Never regret the cost although it was a big $$$ stretch for us back then.
18/0
Towle Living Hartford is an anagram for “fart-holed living wort”
Even though I like the idea of only having to wash my forks once per month, that’s just too many damn spoons.
@flehm spoons always go missing
@flehm @kevinrs When my kid was at home I’d find spoons in the yard, after one had been run over by the lawnmower, by the basketball hoop, in her room… anywhere but in the sink to be washed!
/youtube spoon is all you need
That function most likely is not included in the owners manual and would be considered an off-label use.
Absinthe spoon in the hostess set? Class!
@tartanknickers I think you’ll need a bigger glass to use it as an absinthe spoon.
What luck. I needed a new set of silverware. My current spoons got gnarled up by taking a few rides in the garbage disposal. Now I’ll have backups if it happens again.
@ElieC my ex was notorious for ruining my cutlery. I got this gadget and it saved so many spoons.

@RiotDemon Oh wow. I need that. Thanks so much.

@Kidsandliz @RiotDemon Garbage disposals are over-rated. I never…well hardly ever use mine. I wouldn’t miss it one bit.

Unless you don’t care if it bends or scratches or get stained, I recommend not getting 18/0 flatware. Look for 18/10 on sale.
18/0 is cheap crap.
After this shelter-in-place order is over, it will be a long time before I eat in this house again!!!
I thought dessert forks had 3 tines?
101 tiny burdens.
Almost bit the bullet and bought. But was strong and read the comments. I am looking for some good flatware just not this.

Great…for all of the dinner parties I’m throwing these days a la Masque of the Red Death
@Joanna that’s a good story
Don’t forget to bring a towle
So disappointed. I thought that “Cutting Edge” meant they were bringing back the “flowbee”. flowbee commercial
Ok, this is off topic but it’s important.
If you answer your phone and someone says, “Knock, knock.” HANG UP IMMEDIATELY!!
It’s a Jehovah’s Witness working from home.
And I’ve been telling this really funny corona virus joke. It’s really great.
But I’ve stopped telling it. It was taking 7 days to see if people got it.
How can I use set for 12 of any party can not be more than 10 people now days?

Chinathe middle of the Indian Ocean.@tangmofen it’s 18/0 stainless. There was no reason to expect it to be solid and not bend.
